What you're talking about is just a hipster.

The type of person who doesn't like Mario but wares a Mario shirt because it's ironically cool or whatever.

Yes, I've met a lot of them and yea they're annoying.
Damn those hipsters!
They're everywhere!

But yeah, pretty much what he said.

OR:
People who like a game, and know some lingo, and maybe hack games using a modding program on their computer, and think they are teh l33tzors.

Either group is annoying.
In this case, I'm referring to both male and female, though, so as not to discriminate.

Agree with OP. Case in point: Jessica Chobot.
hmmmm not sure if Ive herd of her, so where is she from? like I assume on the internet
She's supposed to be the girl that does the "Daily fix" on ign.com. I hardly ever use the site to be honest, but form what I've seen of her shes one big poser. Hot yes, but my arse is she a TRON fan...
so youre telling me the biggest gaming site ever can't even get somone whos actually into games?

that said however thats only what youve said, Im if thats her job...you know I mean she might be genuine we dont really know (havnt seen any of her stuff, even then I wouldnt really want to judge)
No, I'm saying that they got someone who was hot to do their daily 2-minute video blog to rope in hormonal teenage boys (the majority videogaming market). Whether she actually cares about games I don't know for sure... but I suspect she doesn't.
I think she seems genuine, as I remember one where she was talking about what was in the special edition COD pack and suddenly shouted "OH MY GOOD ITS SOCOOL". Could still be fake though :/

I've always wondered what level of geek I am to be honest...

-I mean I love the Lord of the Rings, but I've never read the books...
-I dislike Nintendo games for the most part and I think Mario is horribly overrated...
-I play games a lot but not religiously, like i will play a few hours a day maybe. Unless of course I go through a phase every so often when I hit a game hard (World of Warcraft, Minecraft) But its more a fad that i get bored with after a few weeks/ maybe months. For minecraft its about a week...
-i pretty much hate most 'retro' stuff.
-Some games, like oblivion, i will play over and over again just because it's amazing.

Anywhoo!

One of my friends (a girl) described herself as a geek to me and my lad mates, she thought watching 'The Big Bang Theory' made her a geek. I laughed!
I laughed reading that, silly girl :)

Where did my geek culture come from, i didn't fit anywhere else. Until i found a game called counter strike and then i knew that i wanted to be apart of that community. I evolved into the person i am, because of Video games and the culture that comes with it.

And i want to find a woman who'll have me who likes the things i do. Regardless for their reasoning.

The nearest I've ever met to a geeky girl is the girl I knew who liked to watch Stargate Episodes when she didn't have anything else to do and recognised the name of a video game. As far as I can tell she's just lazy like me and watches lots of daytime tv and she learnt about the video game from her male colleagues. I can't understand why a girl would want to act geeky to get attention because (from what I've seen) she'd be ostracised by the other girls. My sister is fairly geeky thanks to my influence and it's brought her nothing but trouble... although she does get more attention from boys because of it it seems. Luckily she has a 20 year old brother to scare them shitless. I relish that part of my life.

I don't know why girls would want to be geeky for attention... A lot of the times I have to downplay my geekery because in a lot of people's eyes its not a good thing. I don't know how many times I've talked to guys and gone into tangents about computers, videogames, books, science, scifi, anime -- whatever, and gotten blank stares like I'm crazy. Not to mention the blank stares from other girls! So a lot of the genuine "girl geeks" or "girl gamers" tend to not want to make it so obvious. Others, like myself, just don't really care. I like what I like, the end.

I guess the thing is the 'posers' don't have the know-how to go into long conversations about those kinds of things, so that's what makes it kind of obvious. Sometimes they might see a Mario bag at Hot Topic or something and get it because its "retro" or "geek chic", which I have come to understand is more of a style than girls trying to be geeks. Like the girls who will wear band t-shirts and can't even tell you a single song they like by said band. Also, there are the hipsters who wear things for the "irony" as well. So, that triforce t-shirt? "You just wouldn't get it".

And also, "geek" is a relative term. You can be a geek about just about anything, it just tends to go by a different name (like "audiophile" or "sports fanatic"). Also, some people may think you have to be unhealthily obsessive with something to be considered a "geek", but some may think if you like Doctor Who and play any video game that's on some kind of console or PC, you're a "geek". So it really depends.

Sometimes it's much more obvious to tell who is and who isn't; EG: Two friends of mine are in stable relationships with girls who feign interest into their boyfriends hobbies in order to not be bored to death when they are practicing them, but at least this means these girls are willing to go halfway to my friends in order to satisfy them, and in turn, they go with them to shopping malls. It's curious to see how, in the end, the guys like going shopping with their girls and reccommending them clothes and giving their opinion while the girls actually become genuinely interested in games, manga, their respective lores, etc...

But if you really need to know if a chick is a geek... Anime conventions. ´Nuff said.

If a girl knows what she's talking about, knows technical terms, doesn't get 'gig' and 'meg' confused, has a few favourite games, knows the difference between Radeon and GeForce etc etc and is genuinely interested, she can comfortably call herself a geek. At least, that's the qualifications I'd expect of anyone who considers themselves as such.

Edit, that's just for techie geeks, I guess - but the 'basics' principle would apply to any geek-worthy subject, I'd expect.
Yeah, I have no idea what the difference between a Radeon and a GeForce is. I'm a PS3 female gamer, so all your PC gaming stuff is unknown to me.

I can, however, talk extensively about the original Doctor Who - preferably Peter David or Tom Baker (my two favs).

And yes, I saw your edit, but I found your comment about video cards to be rather antagonistic. I took a couple of computer science classes, and I can write HTML code pretty well (in notepad even) and I know that Radeon and GeForce are both graphics cards, and I know that the important number in a graphics card is actually the second one (a 4100 is weaker than a 3900 for instance) but that's about the extent of it.

To be honest, it depends on what the girl thinks makes her a geek. But everyone else has already discussed this point so I'm going to take it in a different direction. Note that I'm really only going to be talking about gamers right now, I'm too pressed for time to consider the entire wonderful spectrum of nerd culture:-

These 'poser' geek girls are not alone. I've come across plenty of guys (probably more of them than the girls actually) who have only a very casual interest in say..Mario Kart, or an equally widespread game, yet call themselves a geek or a nerd. These guys and girls perhaps only really play one or two games with their friends, and sure, they may know all the catchphrases, but that's only because they're so embedded in pop culture at the moment. The 'posers' have the capacity to become real geeks if their interest becomes deeper but usually they stay shallow and label themselves 'geek' to seem quirky and interesting. There's no point taking offense at it, they're only human after all and every single one of us has tried at one point or another to make ourselves seem intriguing. Just ignore them or expose the depths of your own geekiness, they'll soon realise they're out of their depth and 'nerd up' or just leave, either way it'll solve your problem.

Back to my point about guys being just as bad. In my experience it tends to be guys who're more guilty of this. Sure, there are the girls who're God-awful at gaming and think they're all that, but you just ignore them. It's harder though with the guys who spend their evenings playing exclusively mainstream games (maybe even just the one), such as COD, and think this constitutes nerdiness. Whenever I've got into a conversation with one of these guys who's been trying to impress me with his gaming I find that they genuinely believe having seen Star Wars once or twice and invested in an EcksBawks makes them unusual.

In short, posers suck, geeks rule.

Apologies if it came off antagonistic - I wasn't concentrating much when I posted (hence not even considering geekage in any context other than in PC terms ><), but really all I meant by the graphics cards thing was merely that there are two main brands, not any sort of technical specs, heh - I was kinda being a bit too precise, and not thinking things through enough (doh)...

Still haven't learned about proper capitalization, have we?

Calling yourself a geek usually means you're trying to be one, which implies that you aren't one.
I don't know. The standards are very nebulous in the first place, and social cliques are f-ing stupid anyway. Why does everybody have this urge to be something, instead of just..liking stuff?

so my question to you is, what are the main differences between a "poser" and the "real deal"?
Since you said that you yourself are a geek chick, compare yourself to this

THAT is someone doing it for attention
"eyeball-person?" I learned all I needed to know right there...*facepalm*

Good point, anyway I wouldnt criticize somone for now knowing enough about my favorite game or movie, but as Ive said before I think its about the usuing it to get attention in an annoying way

Sometimes the line blurrs, depends on you definitional of 'geek' really.

1.Is it someone who play VGs?

2.Someone who doesn't conform to social norms?

3.An intelligent woman in the field of game design?

say:
