I've seen people rave about this game, but when I tried to get into it, I hated it.

This was for a number of reasons:
i) I hate click-button combat. Especially combat as apparently repetitive as this. Click pause click pause click. Boring.

ii) Quests. Seriously, run here, now back to here, now back to there, now back to me. It got boring going over the same ground (and killing the same ghoul hounds) over and over again.

This kept me out of the game. Have I missed anything? Does it get significantly better? Or am I just a different breed to those who liked it?

The Witcher's combat is pretty terrible, and the start of the game is long drawn out and gets pretty boring, but if you stick to it and get to the next town I found it a pretty great game. Particularly when it gets to a kind of murder mystery part where the side quests all sort of tie into the main story.

So it requires some persistence but in my opinion it gets pretty damn good.

..You're like me. The game is boring as fuck. It apparently gets "ZOMG SO MUCH BETTER" near the midpoint. I can't bring myself to get there though. ..I really want to like the game. It just sucks. It's like Carrie the video game. The movie is moronically stupid and you don't care about it, until she kills everyone at the very end.

Not a very good method for a game >.>

I dont think a game getting better about half way through really speaks for it. Kind of like the FF14? I dont even know how many there are

Am I the only one who enjoyed The Witchers click combat? I never really noticed myself running back and forth between Quest NPCs, but now that I think about I guess you do do that quite a bit in the first act.

Anyways if your not enjoying the game off the bat and people keep telling you it gets better latter on then thats not really a good incentive to keep playing is it? I'm looking at you Final Fantasy 13 >__>

The combat starts off as terribly dull indeed, I found that it got a lot more interesting when you really had to dodge and use your spells and potions.

At one point the quests get better too. As someone mentioned already, you have to unravel a murder mystery, gather clues and all that. The only downside of them is that in no-time your questlog is filled to the brim with quests.

Yeah I got lost a lot, with the average story boring combat and frequent game crashing errors I gave up.

It had it problems, but I was able to look past them. Loved the story and characters, but if you absolutely hated the system, don't try to play it trough, since it really doesn't change.

-Fantastic ambience.
-Ambiguous and fascinating moral dilemmas.
-Excellent complexity and depth is revealed in the combat system at higher difficulties.
-They've experimented a lot with the dialogues, such as implementing small visual cues to transfer meaning, making it occasionally very minimalistic and disconcerting. Extremely effective if you are not a passive player making an effort.
-Fascinating lore based on a series of very good novels. Unfortunately, only the first two volumes have been translated to english, but they are well worth tracking down.
-The musical score is among the best I have ever heard.
-Despite utilizing the amnesia plot device, the story is very effectively told, and the vast narrative that gradually unfolds is amongst the better ever told by a video game.

Na, I found the combat to be pretty alright, be interesting to see how its tightened up for the sequel.

Yeah the first act is a bit slow to get started but i still enjoyed it more then any other RPG I've ever tried.

Are bothered by the click combat because it has clicking or because the mouse practically tells you when to click next?

You can get Flash's Witcher Mod if that bothers you. That way you actually have to listen to and time the sword strokes, otherwise you forfeit your combo. Not sure if that would improve your experience or just jack up the learning curve.

Bothered by the fact that you have to click at all. I mean, what's the point? So I get repetitive strain injury? I can click the combos in the right place with my eyes shut. Why should I even have to?

Oh, I always figured the did it to make sure you're paying attention as you play. For me it turned into an experience somewhere between Icewind Dale and Parappa the Rapper.

Who knows why they did it? It does make the game seem less like a "assign commands and watch" type affair and makes it one shaky step closer to a God of War type set up.

Same here, combat system was a bit of a challenge at first, but one I got into it found it very engaging. Especially as you start levelling up the combo chains and he starts going apeshit when you time all the clicks just right. Also one of my favorite RPGs, glad I gave it a chance after the 1st town. Geralt is such a bad ass. Then again, I read all the books too, and got the enhanced version to play in Polish with subtitles.

I'm pretty confident the second one will not disappoint!

I thought the game started out pretty well. The combat is fine by me, something a little different than your average RPG - although the sequel apparently is completely revamping it.

I think I played until the 3rd act or so. One thing I liked was definitely the mature atmosphere - and no I don't just mean the sex. The game had a lot of different areas to explore and certainly allowed quite a bit of variation in terms of decision making as well as actions having effects.

Also, dice poker FTW!!

But, I did eventually get bored of it. I think as a first attempt from the dev it's a great game and I definitely am looking forward to The Witcher 2.

Persistence which I do not have. And this is why you will be giving me your save files so I have something to import into Witcher 2.

Or else [small]I'll have to beg, and that is a bit awkward.[/small]

Neeway, if the Witcher had at least come with a character enjoyable enough, I would have stuck through it. But as it is Geralt was.. anything but likeable and I could not make myself carry on through the boring first hours of the game. That man in a douche.

No offence.

Its easily the best RPG of the decade. For more of the "old school" crowd though.

Unlike Bethesda/Bioware games, your choices actually change things and you can see how the changes affect things as the game progresses. Witcher 2 looks to continue this along with improving the combat. Do want.

Guess the game just isn't for you.

I'll third that sentiment. It wasn't great, but it wasn't as horrible as people are saying.

Edit: Just to be clear: I'm talking about the combat, not the game itself.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
only problem I had with it was that I wanted to do everything so I would end up running around all over the place to make sure I found every little quest and did it an ended up getting a bit burned out by the end of the 2nd area

Its has some issues granted but you have to bear with it, which is also something that can be said for every single great RPG since the beginning of CRPG ever, it just goes with the territory. Ok the combat is a bit clunky but forget about the combat, its not really an action game - the gameplay is about the RPG not really the combat.

The one piece of advice I always give to people struggling to get started wit the witcher is wait until you've gotten into the main city before you even consider giving up on it, and then you're best off giving it 10hrs from there before you can really be justified in saying it isn't for you.
