The world is indeed, a pretty good place.
In certain parts of the world.
I've lived a good life. I had parents who loved me, showered me with attention, paid attention to me, helped me at every opportunity, taught me, educated me and showed me the wonders of science and the natural world. I have been given the opportunity to think about so many wonderful things, like space exploration, history both modern and ancient, biology, physics, chemistry and mathematics.
Because I never had to want for food or shelter or water or clothes or money, I was able to immerse myself in books and learn how beautiful and gigantic our world is (which is peanuts when compared to how big space is, but the Earth is still large from a human view-point).
But understand this - while the world might be wonderful for you and me, for some, it is considerably less awesome. You can't develop a healthy mental view of the world if you've seen your brother get his legs blown off from a landmine left over from a war that occurred 30 years ago. You can't marvel at the true beauty of the world if you spend every night drinking dirty water from a ground well and falling ill. You can't jump with joy at the beauty of science if a man from the Taliban is threatening to burn your face off with acid if you even TRY to go to school. Think about that - and I mean REALLY think about that point. Even though there are a lot of schoolgirls who realise their dream of becoming a scientist or a teacher or a musician, there's a few schoolgirls in Pakistan and Afghanistan who are currently blind and scarred for life because a religious fanatic decided that he didn't want "his women" getting too "educated" and decided to hurt them. REALLY THINK ABOUT THAT POINT FOR EVEN A FEW SECONDS.
Yes the world is wonderful. But so many people cannot experience that wonder. So many children NEVER have that opportunity.
So think about that. The good in this world, and there is a lot of good, is countered by the bad in the world, which we humans have to counter with science, humanism, kindness and development.
As Morgan Freeman once said in that rather disturbing movie Se7en: "The world is a fine place, and worth fighting for. I agree with the second part".
