There are a lot of developers who feel the need to give their players free-reign over the game world once the main plot has passed by. The problem, of course, is that there is no narrative hook to draw the player along anymore and that sudden absence that drain the game world of all vitality unless it was already "alive" to begin with. Skyrim (in most cases) pulls this off by not having an exceptionally engaging story so you wont feel so abandoned by the quest-marker Gods once the stories are over.

If there's any game that does post-story gameplay well, I would have to say that it is Dragon Quest 9. There's a length main quest to the game but nearly endless dungeons to explore directly afterwards. In fact, the whole main story is more of a tutorial for the end-game content than anything else, which is good for those who intend to keep playing.

I have a similar problem. I just try to do everything before i do final mission/final boss/etc.

Exception like a couple of other people here would be Lair of the shadow broker and arrival DLC for mass effect 2. Like them it felt more apropriate to do that after the final mission.
