my opinion? think of me as a cynical idealist:while yes, it would be great to see someone become a symbol for justice, who fight's crime and who can terrify the scum of the earth, in the end, do you really think they can make a difference?
every second i spend writing this, someone die's, and they will never get any justice. someone will be killed for trying to stand up to bad people, for trying to help someone in trouble, or even because they're in the wrong place at the wrong time. and will they get any justice? no-because all those bad people know how to use power to corrupt and change the most morally upright individuals in the whole world, so that they will never be blamed for it, and never be brought to justice.

I'd be willing to fight crime on my own -the whole wearing tights things. Personally I say we send Udo Dirkscheider to fight all crime.
We have heroes that rise up to try and help protect the weak, lift the destitute out of poverty, and combat the crime levels. They are called politicians. The problem is it has become a lucrative career choice, and the system that gives them power has become more important than their ability to wield that power. When was the last time you heard a politician called a hero? Yeah, Me neither.
Phoenix Jones anyone? The guy who dresses up like a super hero and actually fights crime?

A complete evil bastard that the world can come together to hate and fight against. If I had the powers of superman the greatest gift I could give to the world is be the bad guy.
If a real "super"hero actually existed modern society would tear them to pieces, we don't like our gods being around where we can see them.
Anyone remember that bit in Iron Man 2 where Stark is refusing to hand over the designs for Iron Man armour? Do you honestly think the media wouldn't have portrayed him as the most dangerous terrorist to ever walk the earth because of that? and you can bet the government would try to have him arrested for treason and possesion of weapons of mass destruction or something.

Heroes are great in stories but in real life it just won't work. Take Batman for instance. He is the most likely archetype of heroes that could exist in the real world. In the comic books he beats people without killing anyone (lets just focus on the original Batman, not the side shoots and newer ones).
In reality? The first time he goes up against a gang by himself he would have been shot a dozen times. All the fancy martial arts in the world won't save you from a 9mm JHP to the head. Sure he may beat down one or two but by then the other four have started shooting.
Now if super powers become reality things could be different. If we get a real life Flash or Captain America okay, they have a chance but Rorschach or The Punisher? Not so much, sooner or later they would get their heads blown off.

While living in a world without superpowers, magic, alien tech, etc. An individual will never be effective. The minute an individual moves beyond breaking up street fights and chasing off the occasional robber, he/she will be targeted by both the police and the local criminals, and will be quickly arrested and/or killed. This is especially true if the individual attempts to "dress up"
A vigilante organization might be effective, if it remains incredibly secretive. If I were to form such an organization, I'd start with a mixed group of former detectives/private investigators and ex-military personnel. In order to be effective, the unit would have to investigate crimes in much the same way the regular police do. The advantage we have of course is being able to ignore due process in cases like the mafia and gangs. The current court system is largely unable to prosecute many of the worst criminals in the nation, even though we know beyond a reasonable doubt who they are and what they have done.
