As I may have mentioned before my dreams of owning a PS3 is about to come to fruition, especially with the release of the PS3 slim which has dramatically reduced my financial woes. However, now that I am actually within purchasing distance..I seem to have acquired cold feet.

I began wondering why I wanted in the first place. My 360 elite has served me well (it hasn't RRoD, bless it's motherboard) and I have never felt the sense of missing out of an experience without the PS3. Still, I do want one..I don't know why but I feel that I must own one. So I decided to hit the internets and see what games (exclusives and otherwise) can justify me spending money on the PS3. The game list I came up with (based on the games that I like to play) was worryingly short, asides from: Little Big Planet, Infamous, Ratchet and Clank and Uncharted. (I don't like MGS..not a fan sorry!. And I don't like sports simulators and I specially despise JRPG's of all sorts).

This sudden realization about the alarming lack of titles that suites my gaming style made me wonder, what the F am I doing spending on a console that doesn't really cater to my sort of games. Even as far as future titles go: apart from Uncharted 2 I only found a game called "Heavy Rain" to be appealing vs the usual Mobile Suit Gundam type products that Sony usually pushes.

So PS3 owners and wise console sages, considering that I prefer the action/adventure/European RPG games over the platform/racing/Japanese RPG type games should I give up on the PS3 and spend the money on a new 26" monitor instead?. This is honestly quite a conundrum..I do really badly want to play LBP and Uncharted but is the (even reduced) price of a PS3 Slim worth it especially if it appears that those and their sequels will be the only games I will actually enjoy on the system?.

I also do want to make it clear that this isn't a fanboy thread and I don't intend to flame or bash anyone and their beloved ideals. I am just someone who has always wanted a PS3 but now that I am about to commit to it..I see nothing extraordinary to look forward to. However, if I am wrong about my expectation or any of you wish to point out what the joys of PS3 gaming are then feel free to do so.

but the for the love of god..no flamming!!

Well you've pretty much nailed it there. The PS3 is a good console, and the games that come out for it are mostly excellent, but there's just so little of them!

I would go ahead and get the PS3 anyway. God of War 3 is coming out soon, and there's also the God of War 1+2 package along with it.

yes, the PS3 has a HELL of a lot of games worth playing. On top of what you just mentioned, Demons' Souls looks to be awesome; Valkryia Chronicles, though technically a JRPG, is infact very unique and definitely worth a play; Batman: Arkam Asylum on the PS3 has the Joker as an exclusive playable character.

On top of this, the PS3 has once been described as "indie-heaven"; there is a huge abbundance of unique and snazzy DLC games, which rivals the 360's quantity with quality - titles such as Fat Princess, Echochrome, and Flower are all experiences found nowhere else. I'd get one if I were you :) (besides, it takes up less space than the 360 and is quieter, and uses less power too :p)

Though I understand the 360 is a very good platform, I personally prefer the PS3.

I bought a PS3 when Silent Hill Homecoming got refused classification in Australia and we thought we'd only be able to play an import. This was not a worthwhile decision.
Uncharted is a great game, but once again you have to ask if it's worth buying a PS3 for.
Little Big Planet had little to no lasting appeal to me, and I could have lived without Resistance, though it's a worthwhile game if the PS3 is your only option.

What you really need to ask yourself is if you want a blu-ray player, because if you're already doing most of your gaming on your 360 that's most of what you'll use your PS3 for.

The PS3 ain't for everyone.

I love Ratchet and Clank and LBP.

The PS3 was my first NextGen console and I couldn't be happier.

The PS3 takes pride in it titles and doesn't release a game every 3 days (originally known as the PS2 approach). For example you haven't seen a Barbie PS3 game yet and thats a good start.

P.S Don't worry I dislike MGS too

EDIT: If anyone has seen Barbie for the PS3 then my PS3 is going in the fucking bin!

I'm pretty much in the same boat as you. The only reason I have a PS3 is for the exclusives. Most of my gaming is done on my PC or 360. However, the PS3 exclusives (particularly Uncharted) are so good that I don't regret purchasing the console. Plus it functions as my blu-ray player.

And there's one thing I love about the PSN movie downloading service much better than Live...you can rent movies on the PSN. But in my opinion, that's the only good thing about Sony's movie downloading service. I will never actually buy one, because you can only ever download it once. If you delete it to free up space on your hard drive, you'll have to buy it all over again.

Maybe Ratchet and Clank would also appeal to you? I didn't think it'd be my sort of thing but I really enjoyed Tools of Destruction and now I find myself looking forward to A Crack In Time.
It depends on your attitude towards money at the end of the day, in the grand scheme of things it's not a whole lot of money but is it the best thing you could be spending it on?
If it helps, I found I only truly favoured my PS3 over my 360 after I bought a large HDTV, the blu-ray player came into it's own and most of the exclusive games looked a lot sharper than their 360 rivals. So maybe if you don't have a HDTV, save up for one of those instead and look at getting a PS3 at a later date?

Thank you guys for the input, I was afraid I would have to dodge a torrent of tomatoes hurled at me.

Thanks for bringing up the PSN by the way, I was told that the PSN is free to play online as opposed to the Xbox Live system which definitely is a plus for the PS3. There is also the Blu-ray thing which is cool (even though I don't really buy blu-ray movies but a time will come..Im sure)

I do like the Indie games so that's another reason why the PS3 is a good choice but I am no fan of the Japanese games (I don't know why but I never could get into Final Fantasy type games and despite the interesting Demons' Souls and Valkryia Chronicle trailers I was still left disappointed) as such I am afraid that Sony, whose gaming library consist of a vast majority of Japanese market games, is going to render me disappointed for a very long time.

And yes, I did see a lot of PS3 exclusives coming in 2010, most of them were sequels but a few did grab my attention. A few...

I do love Ratchet and Clank and I do want to play it too but in the grand scheme of things, as you say, is a few titles worth $494.

Also, if it helps I do have a 16" high definition LCD TV, I don't know if the PS3 will look any better on it but as long as I can see what I am doing it's fine..I guess.

The only reason I would want a PS3 is for Disgaea 3, but you said you didn't like JRPGs so I fear you wouldn't get much fun out of it.
I'd hold off on buying it for now, why you ask?

Well it's only going to get cheaper, it's only going to get more games, so why not wait?
If you aren't sure yet then don't buy it yet, simple as that.
It's not as if Sony is going to drop off of the earth anytime soon.

The PS3 should look better as it has a higher capability, also it doesn't get over taxed by using HD.

I'm all about the PS3, I used to hate it venemously (probably prom when I was a staunch player of sega and nintendo consoles and the original PS systems spelled their downfall) But after my 360 burnt out I decided to make the two footed leap into the PS world. And I haven't regretted it in the slightest.
I find that unless you have some kind of need to own games specific to each platform then owning both the PS3 and 360 isn't neccassary but in a comparison of the two the PS3 is (in my humble opinion) a superior system from beggining to end. The higher console price is easily offset by the Blu-ray player induction. Long run there's a price break because of the free online gaming as previously mentioned and an internal Wi-fi reciever if you don't want to use cable rather than paying for the external extra.
Again its a different choice for everyone but I'd say that as it was promised as a "ten year console" and seems to be working out that way the ivestment will probably bear long term fruit.

there is quite a few exclusives that should be pretty good. ill give a few examples:

Heavenly Sword (female god of war).
Trine (unless you play it on the PC).
ff7 (PSN)
Batman: Arkham Asylum (playable joker ftw).
Prototype (if you dont have it for the 360).
Warhawk (an online shooter from the first few months of the ps3, should be pretty good).

Yes, I do. But I have them already.
No sense in buying them again, is there?

I feel your pain. The PS3 is a good console but the limited *good* exclusives are few and far in between. The few that exist are amazing though, like Fat Princes, Ratchet & Clank and Uncharted but their isn't a real line up to it. Now if Sony could find other publishers and developers outside itself and actually built games that the machine was designed for, using 100% of the Cell processor and the Blu-ray capability, we will get somewhere.

Whereas with the 360, well, already they are chock full of plans with Fable 3, Gears of War 3, Halo: Reach, Halo 3: ODST, Mass Effect 2, Left 4 Dead 2 and the frankly amazing Alan Wake. However, it can be argued that if you have a mid/high end PC you can at least run half of these titles (some are 360 only though). Whereas PS3 exclusives are really PS3 exclusives and they tend to take their own sweet time in getting to players. Perhaps that the reason why the 360 Red Rings so often, its working all the damn time!.

I guess it comes down to what you want from the PS3. It is a great entertainment system as well as a great console but if your flavor of games is the Microsoft variety then save the money and stick to the 360, alternatively, upgrade your computer and wait for Diablo 3.

Get a nice 1080p 26". Mmmmmm.

You can get a Blu ray player for around £150 now, so unless you like the games the PS3 has to offer, I'd spend yo' money elsewhere.

Good luck with that. Going well so far.
I'm not into MGS either but I still dig my ps3 games.
It sounds like you have quite enough that you're interested in.

Sounds like its worth it to me. Especially if you have an hdtv.

The online play is free and (as someone who regularly plays on both machines) there really isn't much of a difference in the online service: PSN has things XBL doesn't and XBL has things PSN doesn't. There's also a lot of really original PSN games: Pixel Junks, Echocrome, Last Guy but you should try the demos for them first.

You should also try the demo for Valkyria Chronicles, it's manga style (kind of like Okami) and it does have rpg elements but I've known a couple of jrpg haters to get into it.

Judging by what you want, you'd probably really like Warhawk too.

I wouldn't depend on future games though (God of War3, Agent, Demon Souls) they could very well suck.

I speak as someone who owns both the PS3 and the 360, but prefers to play games on the 360, mostly because I like the controller better, and I enjoy the better online features available to me there.

There are very, very few titles which are exclusive to the PS3 that hold any interest for me. I don't give a damn about shooters, sports games, or JRPGs, which makes up the bulk of next gen titles. So far, there have only been a few games that have actually been worth a purchase on the PS3, and to be honest I mostly use mine to play my old PS2 games, which I still love. However, if you're buying now, you likely won't be getting a BC unit.

At the same time, I'm a gamer. This is my hobby. I own a Wii too. I almost never use that damn thing, but I have it, because this is my hobby. I own several guitars and basses too, some I rarely play, but music is my hobby. If that isn't a good enough reason for you and the system doesn't have enough on it to be interesting to you personally, you're probably better off holding off for now.

Indeed, very interesting points thank you all again for the input.

As a general rule to gaming, I save the RTS's for the PC and depending on the title I sometimes opt to play FPS's with a mouse rather than a gamepad, having said that though, I am not an overly enthusiastic FPS fan either, titles such as Halo and Killzone get very old, very fast for me but other titles such as GOW, Bioshock and Max Payne I do thoroughly enjoy. (I am fickle that way)

Anime/JRPG based games I have tried in the past and maybe because of the bad acting, bad translations, bad script, bad voice work, bad gameplay, bad graphics, bad plotlines and generic monster battles I have become jaded towards the whole genre. It might be unfair but that is my experience and I can't take another game from the genre seriously. Devil may cry, Ninety-nine nights, Eternal Sonata, Final Fantasy and all others that I have tried, have resulted with my head banging against a desk in a simple harmonic motion. Sure they might not be the best JRPG titles to start with and that may be where I went wrong but the damage is done..playing JRPGs or the thought of it, would make my testicles shrink (if I had any).

So, I very much doubt that I will take a liking towards JRPGs ever, despite the awesome trailers and cinematic. It's just not meant to be for me.

I guess for now, I'll hold onto the money and wait. Wait and see if this new 999% increase in market sales will result in Sony actually making some games that I would want to buy.
