In The Rime Of The Ancient Mariner you'll read
"water water everywhere,
and all the boys did shrink.
water water everywhere,
nor any drop to drink."

Which is pretty far from "water water everywhere, but not a drop to drink."

Surely you mean torpedoes... or are you referring to some TV show where the actor has pirate accent and pronounces torpedo as tarpdedo?

Anyway, even if the original quote was "Danm the torpedoes", surely in the sebsequent shows they actually meant "Man the torpedoes" since they actually wanted to fire torpedoes?

I can't imagine a battle scenario in which you would order your ship by quoting.

"Let them eat cake."

Supposedly Marie Antoinette said this in response to another famine in France, making her look to be a tremendous *****. In reality what she (supposedly) said was "qu'ils mangent de la brioche." Brioche is a type of bread. Also, she almost certainly never said this. There is no record of this phrase until some years after it supposedly happened: also, she was incredibly unpopular amongst the French, and many (false) stories were about regarding her callousness and the like, and this is just another.

"Alas, poor Yorrick. I knew him well"

Is actually

"Alas, poor Yorrick. I knew him, Horatio"
And it's the most pointless bit of the play.

Oh wait... I just saw your avatar...
Wait, you think it's more pointless than Ophelia's "I'm going slightly insane" bit? :p I thought it was a nice commentary on mortality actually... This is irrelevant to this discussion though xD

One small step for A man, one giant leap for mankind.

There was a error in the transmission back to earth, saying it without the A makes no sense, it would be like saying 2 is 4, 3 is 4.
It was a mistake by Neil Armstong. The quote is definitely "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."
Just listen to the actual recording, there's no room for this mythical 'A'.
Actually, in one of the numerous TV specials I saw about the moon landing in July (what with it being the 40th anniversary this year) there was one where people analysing the recording found it. He definitely said the 'a' - it didn't come across in the broadcast because he said it softly and quickly, but it's actually there.

I still think "One small step for man... (etc)" is the better quote though.

Correct, unless you add something. For example, "I could care less only if I were comatose."

Charles Darwin on the formation of evolution of the eye

"To suppose that the eye, with all its inimitable contrivances for adjusting the focus to different distances, for admitting different amounts of light, and for the correction of spherical and chromatic aberration, could have been formed by natural selection, seems, I freely confess, absurd in the highest possible degree."

Possibly the most misquoted sentence in the evolution 'debate', because those that use this forget that Darwin wrote in the following few pages how he thinks the eye evolved and why that stamement of his is actually wrong. It was just his style of writing: Start with the most likely response against his argument and proceed to demolish the response.

I am thankful that other people realized this grave grammatical error, it changes the whole meaning when they say it wrong.

Contrary to popular belief, "hitting the ground running" obviously refers to dropping to the ground, running for a quarter of a second, and then tumbling to your rock hard doom.

[sup]And yes, this is sarcasm.[/sup]

Correcting people's misquotes... yeah that was a whole lot of fun back then when it made me think I was unique and it made everyone else think I was a douce. Then I discovered I wasn't unique (see this thread) and everyone else still thought I was a douce.

So have fun, someone beat you to the punch anyways. ;)

Many editions of George Orwell's Animal Farm and 1984 published during the Cold War had the opening quote "Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism". The publishers intentionally left out the last part of his sentence: "and for democratic socialism, as I understand it."

Actually, this is entirely anecdotal, I forgot which source I learned this from. The irony just kills me though.
The irony being that George Orwell was actually a democratic socialist, right?
The irony being that this type of censorship was typical of the totalitarianism he objected to and wrote about in his novels. Wait, were you making a joke? I think I've missed something.
Actually, I misread your statement. I thought you were claiming the George Orwell was against democratic socialism, which would have been laughably silly.

uh yes I meant torpedos....I've never been accused of being able to spell well.

And they are ripping of the quote, and besides, if you wanted to fire your torpedo's, why would your order the crew to drive directly at the enemy vessel?

Submarines fire the torpedoes out of tubes in the bow of the vessel, and those torpedoes have a limited range, so if you wanted to engage your enemy with torpedoes it wound make sense to travel towards them at full speed, so you could fire sooner and so that the torpedoes would have less distance to travel, thus giving your enemy less chance to move out of the way.

I'm not disputing that the original quote was "Damn the torpedoes. Full speed ahead", I just think that "Man the torpedoes. Full speed ahead" would be also a valid order in certain battle situations.
