The Yogscast, I can't count how many times they've given their audience for more profitable pastures.

The WoW videos and old Yogpod in which they'd just talk about the weather and prank call their friends were great.
I was okay when they gave the WoW audience the finger to make Shadow of Israphel videos because they were pretty funny and the Yogpod was relatively unchanged.
Then they gave the SoI audience the finger in favour of Minecraft mod spotlights and custom maps.
Last I checked they'd all but replaced Minecraft with Let's Plays.
I don't really enjoy the Yogscast either but you have to give them some credit, they do raise a SHIT LOAD of money for charity every christmas.
Last time they got a total of £202,473.30 http://www.justgiving.com/yogscast/.

Also the yogscast is not just Simon (Honeydew() and Lewis (Xephos) they have quite a lot of youtubers making all sort of videos. http://www.youtube.com/user/BlueXephos just look at the list to the left.

There are several I just don't care about, but Ray William Johnson is the only one I really, really dislike. It's probably because I have friends who genuinely think he's funny, and thus made me sit through more of his stuff than my brain could take. Good god, every single thing he does can be summarized with "look at me, I'm so edgy and funny and these videos are also funny if I replay them twelve times while adding my edgy and funny commentary". That in itself would be bad use of comedy if it wasn't for the fact that the guy plainly isn't funny. In fact, he comes off as a giant douche.

Then again, I'm not too big on "big youtubers" myself. I like TotalBiscuit, the rest I just don't care very much about.

Well, I don't watch a lot of the big guys (because they're mostly awful) so I can't name many. Some that I DO know are:

Irate Gamer - guy's a total hack and a douchebag to boot.

TheAmazingAtheist - I was a subscriber yeeaaarrs ago when he actually did videos relating to atheism (ah, the golden age of youtube atheism... how I miss thee), but when his format changed to being just opinion pieces on current events I unsubscribed because a) I don't give a shit, and b) people were already doing that far better than he was.

ZoominGames - this channel is all about pandering to young, horny boys. Every thumbnail has boobs, regardless of the content, and the guy even went so far as to feed the script through a female text-to-speech synthesiser to give the illusion it's an actual girl doing the videos.

Oh, and every video that has a titillating thumbnail with 100 million views and a like bar that looks like Vader's lightsaber. Youtube should REALLY have the like bar displayed under the thumbnail so I can avoid wasting my time of such garbage.

That said, there are a few big channels out there that are fun to watch, like Game Grumps.

It used to be Simon and Lewis just talking nonsense while playing WoW, that was the Yogscast I liked.

Then they got too mainstream, they let all their little buddies in on the e-fame and now they're churning out five soulless Let's Plays a week.

Yep. I act like a dick online all the time. It's called anger and I completely understand it.
anger? its one thing to go nuts at a stupid person/troll online its another too....eh never mind

[quote/]Furthermore, he recognized he was a dick, went back and did what he could to fix it by apologizing directly to the person he was a dick to.

So all I see it reflect is a short internet temper.
apology or not it rings alarm bells[/quote]
Oh alarm bells certainly. But again, didn't really change my opinion of him overall. I still like the guy and the things he makes quite a lot.

Also, really Vaulty? "eh never mind"? We both know there's more to say than that.

It's not just Youtube. All you need to do is look at cinema and television and you'll see the same thing. Why is it that Jersey Shore gets 7 (or is it 8?) seasons, and yet Firefly gets cancelled before they finish their first?
To be fair Firefly was doomed from the start, it was very difficult to pull audiences in and get them committed when Fox decided to air the episodes out of order besides the fact that they never finished their first season.

....I still miss that show so much

As much as I dislike PewDiePie, he is nowhere near as obnoxious as his goddamn fans.

If they managed to get the views, they are doing something right. People on this forum need to learn that just because you disagree with something on a subjective level, doesn't make it wrong.
^Thank you for pointing this out.

And to all the people getting angry about this stuff, can't you just let it go and accept that mainstream will always get more than the unknown talent, that's why they're considered mainstream. And if people whom were unkown talents became as big as the 'youtube celebs' then their would be people saying that they are talentless.
This all the way. I don't like lots of Youtubers and do you know what I do? I don't watch their videos. I normally object to the "If you don't like it don't use it." argument, but in this case it actually works.

I like people who understand that youtube is just a gimmick and don't become too absorbed by it. Like Robbaz, Mrroflwaffes, Dose of Buckley.
Despite this I like Yogscast. This may be because I come from the same city as them, but I really like some of their videos as background to my gaming. Apparently they have a huge office block where they do stuff from, my mate tried to get work experience there -.-

I guess the obviuos one is anything those Smosh guys do.
also, have we all forgotten Justin Bieber came from youtube? That lone is reason enough to clsoe youtube - even a 1% less chance of catching another Bieber Fever is worth it.

there are mainstream youtubers that are still great and dont act like idiots. for example Nigahiga

I like all those things :D Except Yogscast, but I've never really given them a proper chance...

OT:

Mine will sound cliche, but...
iJustine
RWJ
PewDiePie
Schmoyoho (Used to love them in the Autotune the News days, but now they're very...eh)
Oh, and DSPhilGaming or whatever his channel is now.

However, to try and not sound like a bitter person, Youtubers I love include:

Criken
Jenomorph
TheSw1tcher
gradualreport

The Amazing Atheist (He's a lout with a superiority complex, yet "Doesn't believe in ad hominem". Nice one man, good display of logic. On top of that, he's a sexist jackass, a loud douchebag, and has become the Atheist version of RWJ, who he used to bag out himself.
Ray William Johnson (Though his side-project "Your Favourite Martian" is interesting)
Jenna Marbles (Really doesn't need explaining)
Divine Femitheist (The person who embodies all of those "Crazy Feminist" memes)
VenomfangX (PCFCS)
Laci Green (Pandering and shallow)
EDIT: Oh, and "EpicMealTime". Shit got old faaaaast

I can't really think of any others off the top of my head, mostly because I avoid watching material that annoys me. I don't actually spend that much time watching Let's Plays or such, so I've no idea about gaming ones.
Weird, I could of swore VenomfangX shut his channel down a couple of years ago.

It's not just that, it's that they are still somehow making Shadow of Israphel and the scripted stupidity drives me insane.

I think they're holding it off because it's the only reason some people still go to their channel... I know it's mine.

Not necessarily. View fraud on YouTube is still pretty rampant, all you really need are auto-refreshing and proxy changing scripts (or a youtube view bot if you're lazy). Hell, there are commercial products (i.e. Tube Increaser) available that do exactly that. Or you could embed multiple copies of the video set to autoplay on popular pages in social networking sites if the owner hasn't disabled html in comments (thankfully, as far as I'm aware of, Facebook doesn't allow this). You could also use fake thumbnails and fill the title or description box with keywords like boobs, sexy asses, kittens, etc. to lure people into viewing your video (Shane Dawson and several other youtube partners are guilty of this), but that more or less falls under trickery than outright fraud.

The point being is that views alone (especially from users that consistently upload videos) aren't really the best thing to judge a video/youtuber by. A better basis might be their number of subscribers, then it's just a matter of taste. Still, I'm willing to bet that many current youtube partners got their start by outright cheating the system this way via inflating their video's number of views to an unreasonable degree to consistently stay on the most viewed page.

It's been said a lot already but I find PewDiePie annoying, not keen on Tobuscus either. I can tolerate sxephill in small doses and Little Kuriboh has been stretching his Marik stuff too far for my personal tastes. They're the only "big youtubers" I have experience with, apart from maybe the vlogbrothers but I like their stuff, scishow, crashcourse etc. I'd also like to mention Quill18 and Kikoskia.
