I never said man did not have an impact on the Earth, do not put words in my mouth. I said that anthropic global warming has not been proven (and is quickly falling out of favor lately) and that nuclear waste at this time is negligible.

This planet is not "doomed", the only thing "doomed" about it is when the Sun expands and completely engulfs it, although that's not really known, it is just a popular theory. Animals go extinct each day, with or without humans. The Day After Tomorrow was not a documentary. This discussion would have to be done somewhere else as I do not want to take away from this one.

And let's not forget the time it would take for the actual satellite itself to get to 200 light years away...
Yeah, although I said getting there would be another story.
Although it would be awesome if they...somehow got there instantaneously.

[small]Although I know it's kind of impossible by the laws of physics. Right?[/small]

when the Sun expands it wont engulf the earth, because it will loose a lot of its mass and gravitational pull, so we will drifts away from it instead.

probably into another star, but hey ho!

Nuclear Power and The Bomb
nuclear power is a good thing. It probly fuels your house right now, and its a clean energy source. Weaponising it is bad.
i agree

Hello ppl's,

So I'm watching discovery last night and it's some space program about all the neato shit you can find beyond our solar system. Ok, cool. They start talking about the satellite we sent out like 20 years ago called "Voyageur" 1? maybe 2? not sure. you probably have heard of it even if you do not know the name. We put greeting messages in it in over 50 languages, we put our physiology, and something else...

That something else is what I have a problem with. We put the instructions on how to find earth in there. So now, whenever anyone finds the stupid thing, hopefully they are friendly or we are frickin toast.

Think. In EVERY sci-film, video game, whatever, the location of the homeworld is always the most closely guarded secret, and we have just sent the flipping thing out there for anyone to pick up.

I think it's the most colossally stupid thing we, as a race, have ever done.

Thoughts?
ok good point about the directions to earth, thats just dumb.

Thing is, it's going to take hundreds of years for that thing just to get outside our Solar System. By the time the Voyager probes reach the outskirts of the Sol system, we will have developed further technologically speaking and we'll be even more capable of defending ourselves. If alien life does exist, there's not even any gurantee that they'll pick it up, or if they do, they may not be as technologically advanced as us. They may not have achieved space travel yet, whereas we have. A common misconception among theories about alien life, fuelled a lot by popular fiction, is that any aliens will be intelligent, as technologically advanced as us (or more so), bipedal and/or humanoid, and so on. None of these are likely (if alien life does exist experts agree that it is most likely to be some sort of insect style creature). Therefore the idea isn't really as stupid as one may think.

As for the stupidest thing mankind has ever done, I would have to go with US and UK politicians over the past ten years. Simple as that.
yeah good point but i have to give some credit to TheMatt for raising a good point and if it is insectoid like life like you think it would be, that would be bad because the first thing that comes to mind for me is the Zerg.

worst idea humanity had was the banning of capital and corpral punishment.

problems with kids today could all be solved by smacking them when they're young, to enforce some FUCKING DISCIPLINE!

Distilling alcohol.

I believe Homer Simpson said it best;

"Ahh, beer. The cause of and solution to all of life's problems."

In the beginning the Universe was created.
This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.
[/thread]
Unforunately the universe wasnt an idea that mankind came up with, otherwise i'd agree.

Afew of my thoughts

Celebrities
Rap 'music'
political correctness

and purely because it hasnt been said yet, worst idea mankind ever had?

This thread.

(Actually its not a bad thread idea but someone had to say it)

Some days, when I watch CNN, I think it that our primordial ancestors, not humans, made the stupidest mistake by crawling from the oceans.

I'd have to say it was religion.

Do you ever stop and think where we would be as a species if it weren't for religion...either scientifically or culturally?
