Topic.

Suprised this has not been created yet. Well sure, theres plenty of "Bad/worst games" thread but none of them especifically aim towards indie games. So yeah. Lets tell what indie games are (as always, in our opinion) the worst to us.

I will start with this ************:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/f/f4/Bastion_Boxart.jpg/255px-Bastion_Boxart.jpg

Because I am STILL a noob in this forums, this image probably dosnt renders right here and most people wont even bother clicking on it since in the URL it already tells you thats the games name is...

BASTION. I honestly dont get what people see in this game. In short, it suffer badly with the pretty bland gameplay. This is always a first for me, I dont care/CANT care about the story of a game if the gameplay is not at the very least decent enough. Its just how I work. Its probably the same reason of why I dont enjoy BIOWARE games...

No flames or anything. I respect the people who liked it, but its just not for me. Oh well.

As always please try to stay civil :)
You're either posting this as flame-bait or you don't play a lot of indie games if you say that Bastion is the WORST indie game you've ever played.

I can understand not liking it, sure, and I agree with a lot of the stuff you said, but to label it the WORST is pretty intense.

I'll be honest, a good number of you are just posting flame-bait (I know, I know... "Welcome to the Escapist...") but seriously... most of these games don't compare at all to an actually shitty indie game.

Limbo and Journey are probably the only two games mentioned here that I can truly say were not too fun, and neither one of them is substantially bad.

Call these games overrated or disappointing, but don't label them the WORST.

Try Heavy Payload or Block Fight and then we can talk...

EDIT:

Also to post a picture you just use [ img ] http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/f/f4/Bastion_Boxart.jpg/255px-Bastion_Boxart.jpg [ /img ] without the spaces.

I loved Briad, but I'm a sucker for anything time manipulation and couldn't have paid less attention to the story if I tried.

What I couldn't stand, and felt bad for hating as I bought it from the Humble Bundle was Superbrothers: Sword and Sworcery. I know it was made for iOS first but I couldn't stand anything about it apart from the music which was delightful. I was at the time (and still am) going through a phase of finishing games that I start but I was about a quarter of the way through and was feeling the need to force myself to go on. It's the only game I've started and not finished this year.

That's indy game I've bought (and played) anyway.

Fez. Not even counting the crap about Phil Fish, it was boring, no map and confusing as hell with its puzzles.

Braid as well, damn that was pretentious.

Probably some random flash game that was crap, but the only one that immediately comes to mind that I can name is Yume Nikki. It was just so boring and I could never figure out how to do anything. I kinda get that it was supposed to be scary, but all of the corridors looked exactly like each other, which made navigating the mazes really hard... I just couldn't do it. I could not get any enjoyment from the game because there was none to be found, in any form. :\

Really? No one's gonna say it? Dear Esther. It was excessively pretentious, with mind-numbingly slow movement, no struggle or antagonist of which to speak of, a story that wanted to present itself in a unique way but had no idea how to handle it properly or connect any of the dots, and with no actual gameplay to speak of, without the game moving at a snail's pace, it could be beaten in probably 10 minutes. At least it managed to look fancy.

Braid, the puzzles were unfun, the platforming was finicky, the time mechanics were much less innovative than the designer would like to think, and the story was a pretentious pile of crap.

"The most pointless game ever" It was a simple game from probably 15 years ago on a website with similar simple games and it was broken and pointless. As for something other people might have seen, Lugard form the original humble indie bundle. It felt half finished as it it was still in alpha but they shoved it into the bundle just to get more titles.

Also, shame on many of you posters for actually listing functional games. Even if you don't like it, it still worked. There are much worse that you can find. Shame on your lack of indie game playing.

It might just be that some of use put the more horrible ones out of our mind...

I mean, there was a period there for a while that I played a ton of flash games, not all of them good. In fact, there were a number that were god-awful in all the worst ways. Thing is, they weren't interesting to really remember. :p

Zenhack on xbox live. That game is total garbage. Shitty controls , no hints at all on what to do. Crap graphics and sound to. Utter waste of points.

Oh I see how this works we are picking the top indies and then shitting on them.

Ok then Terraria, I mean fuck that game it's so lazy, they made a platformer but couldn't bother to build the levels so they just randomly generate some crap and make you build the rest yourself... pfft, that's not how you make games.
And Torchlight, so awful, it's a total Diablo ripoff but really cheap and meh.

I have mixed feelings about the ego's that have arisen surrounding indie game developers: Johnathan Blow, Phil Fish, Notch, etc, but good games are good games and I'm glad their making them.

Before I start hating, let me speak some love...

Braid, Super Meat Boy, LIMBO, Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet, FTL, Amnesia: DD, Frozen Synapse, Binding of Issac, HAWKEN*, Narbacular Drop, SLENDER, SCP: Containment, Darwinia, DEFCON, UpLink, Lone Survivor, Dwarf Fortress, Minecraft and Terraria.

Those are all great titles in their own different ways, despite some commonalities. Also, many benefit from PC distribution and concurrently improve the breadth of PC gaming. I like that, since it's my preferred platform.

Now, dislike:

flOw, Dear Esther, The Path, Flower, etc...

I don't begrudge them experimentation, nor do I think all games must have the same expectations, but it does strike me that some of these "non-game" art games do not deserve the praise they receive. Sometimes it's just too little too late, or style over substance or just artistically charged hiking simulators, but I think if you look at these compared to the favored entries, you can see that they do not embrace gameplay to tell their story. They employ the unconventional and cryptic as a substitute for the substance of the medium they choose to employ. I am not unhappy they exist, but I do not believe they are pushing the envelope, so much as resting on the laurels of their claim of 'art'.

---

* Hawken isn't out yet, but I'm willing to give it an pre-release thumbs up.

Both of my worst indie games could barely be considered games at all.

Dear Esther, now I played the original mod, so if they actually added FUN and INTERACTION into the paid release you can disregard this haha. I'm all for stories in video games, but never at the expense of what makes a game... well... a game.

My other one is this little flash game from a couple of years ago that somebody told me would "change my life", called 'Every Day The Same Dream'... I can't get too annoyed at a game made in less than a week, but it was just boring as hell. A lot of people seemed to like it, but I was just left scratching me head thinking.. 'thats it? Really?...'

I don't play a lot of indie games so there are most likely games out there far worse than these across the board, but these two I really hated.

I actually just watched that entire video, was freakin hilarious. I'm gonna check out that dude's other games, he seems like a total nutjob.

OT - does QWOP count? I vote QWOP.

I agree with you about not caring about story if the gameplay is bad but I enjoyed Bastions gameplay. I can't stand Biowares games either.

Anyway I didn't like Dear Esther. Not much else to say really.

Telltale's The Graveyard.
It's so boring. All you do is walk, sit down, some music plays and then there's a small chance of you dying. Maybe I'm not "deep" enough or something, but I don't think it deserves any of the awards it got.

YOU DID'T LIKE BASTION?!?!?! It's one of my favorite games. I literally loved EVERY single thing about it. Still, not for everyone I guess...

I didn't really care for Braid. Not sure why, I just got bored and stopped playing. It's weird because I usually like those kinds of games. I don't really even have a specific reason for being bored. I just suddenly realized that I would much rather play other games.
