Giant bunnies attack a small town. I'm counting it because it was actually supposed to be a serious, "Scary" movie. Because bunnies are scary, apparently.
In the cases of both of these Dr. Who monsters, I read the novels about them before ever seeing them on
screen, and in the books they were great. Seeing them on screen for the first time was kind of a kick
in the privates.
Similar story with The Talons of Weng-Chiang, reading the book (a dozen times) before seeing the serial
was amazing. Watching the effects of that day on the screen was, well--NOT amazing.
I know what they are (I didn't just google dodgy Doctor Who Villains ya know), I just don't know why. Even on the embarrassingly low budget of early Doctor Who they created some fantastic villains. The Daleks had people hiding behind the sofas, Omega and the Master were both pretty badass
Even if Omega did look a little tacky, not nearly as bad as the Sea Devils. Also, he did get defeated by a recorder, but before then he trapped 3 Doctors and nearly destroyed Galifrey. Pretty hardcore dude.
Even the Sontarans and the Cybermen looked better than the Ice Warriors, and the cybermen were made out of tinfoil and those hollow balls you use in PE. Though I think I would have expected much more had I read the books, I feel sorry for you on that.
I figured that you probably did know what they were, I was giving the long winded explanations mostly for other people
reading your post who might not, and JIC you were a casual fan who had seen the things w/o knowing their whole stories.
And of course, I can't resist a chance to show off my Dr. Who Super-Nerd-dom.
I have read that in many of the serials, BBC's effects workshop went out of the way to make the monsters look more
fake--that the level of special effects on them had more to do with how much flak the production staff was getting
for "terroizing children" than the level of skill they could apply--but that's just something I read so take it with
a 50-lb bag of salt.
I do think it's funny that the BBC's switchboard got jammed up with calls from outraged parents about how frightening
the monster they had just shown was--when the "monster" was a trash bag thrown over a stagehand flopping around & a
super-fast camera pan over him.
And you are right about Omega--totally badass. Not only is there the fact that Rassilon could only have accomplished
a tiny fraction of what he did if it hadn't been for Omega paving the way, but
he kept on going even after his whole body was gone! That's *hard* *core*.
Hell no. Clover is a badass monster, and Cloverfield was awesome.
Cloverfield just isn't appreciated for what it actually is.
People consider it a monster movie, but it's not. It's the story of a dude willing to venture through hell to rescue the girl he loves, and his friends who are crazy enough to go with him.
Hell, in this case, is a monster rampaging an apocalypse across New York.
There is a movie called One Eyed Monster which is about a killer penis. Not attached to anyone. Just a rampaging penis which literally splits a man in two. My vote goes to that. Though the killer tyre in Rubber, Sharktopus and Piranhaconda all deserve another mention.
This one was pretty bad, considering it's from the fairly new Doctor Who stuff, even if it was designed by a kid, they chose this as the winner for a competition I believe.
As for the Ice Warriors, I always liked them, considering the age, there are far worse things from television back then XD.
