So, I was just playing Skyrim (AAAAAAAAAAHH ANOTHER SKYRIM THRE- NO! SHUT UP!)
and I know the value of quicksaving.... every 30 seconds.

Anyway, I was fighting this dude, and another dude. So I smash them into the groud, low on health, and so I quick save.

A dragon lands in front of me and eats me. In one of the pretty death cams. Yup, I get picked up, thrown side to side then flung into the air.

When I reload, I pop back with a slither of health, Mr Dragon-Nom-Face lands, and eats me. Nom nom nom.

So, Escapians? Escapists? Escaperons? Escapbebubbles? What is your worst save. Ever. Of all time. When you screwed something up so bad, and saved right then? Or when you just can't make it out alive? We all have. Just after or just before something frickin' horrible happens.

Did you screw something up?
Kill a friend?
Steal a sweetroll?
Save over a lava pit?

Save just as Mr. Just Relax brings out his "Friendly Mallet" but you escape, diving out the window? And then from that day forward, you are forever scared, and whenever you see a white van, a mallet or a big guy wearing a tuxedo you scream "I WILL NOT EAT YOUR HUGE NAIL!"

..... Just me? Ok.

I had a save in Fallout 3 where I was stuck on some pipes and my dog was being attacked. No matter how many times I tried, I couldn't save my dog in time. It was kafkaesque at its best.

NOOOOOOOO

DOG MEAT!!!!!!!!!

Really, if I ever lost him, I am pretty sure that I would find the biggest and most destructive mods and combine them all into one insanly large pistol and then strap the offending [Insert name here] to a big sign that says

"SHOOT THIS"

Played the Halo:reach demo a few months back, it auto-saved while I was flying a spaceship and was about to crash into something. Every time it auto-reloaded after I died it put me about 0.01 seconds before I crashed, so it went a bit like this:

Alive
Boom
Dead
Alive
Boom
Dead
Alive
Boom
Dead
Alive
Boom
Dead
Alive
Boom
Dead

In a loop for about 5 minutes. It was completely impossible to do even the slightest thing to avoid it.
So, long story short, I didn't buy it.

One time in Farcry 2 when I was on 1 bar of health, right next to a car that was about to explode with fire racing towards me through the grass when I saved. I had to make a strategy and remember exactly where the bullets would go. Spawn, hide behind car, snipe two guys, run away from car, shoot last guy with pistol. Took me about 20 tries. Also, my buddy was dying and no matter how many times I tried, I couldn't save him.

In Tomb Raider 3, I managed to save as I was falling into a pool of hypothermia-inducing water.

It took six medipacks to get me out. ;_;

That bit in the Shivering Isles where if you attack Sheogorath he teleports you onto that execution spot, well, more like above the execution spot.

If you're gonna have a thread named this, I'm gonna have to post this:

OT: Can't say I remember anything like that, but if we go with checkpoints, on Halo: Reach I hit a checkpoint on Long Night of Solace........JUST as the Sabre I was in was breaking up and crashing. Had to restart the god damn level.

Half-Life 2. I had 10% health left and had 10 manhacks on me. Of course that's when I drop into the fucking room full of exploding barrels so I can't use my gun on them without exploding myself to death instantly. It took like 50 tries but SOMEHOW I managed to kill them all with just the crowbar and still had 5% health.

Metro 2033 always seemed to save when I was stealthing, just about to be spotted dab unable to avoided it. Why game? Why did you put the checkpoint at the top of the lit stairs with Nazis right across from it?
From my own my own stupidity the worst was probably in fallout 3. Because I?m using mods such as FWE, marts mutant mod (with hordes) and a mod that makes rain radioactive it a fair bit more difficult than vanilla. I stupidly decided to walk from megaton to rivet city at a low level. I ended up heavily irradiated with no radaway left, no ammo for my main weapons and a small amount of ammo for other weapons I scavenged on the way there (and since I got them off enemies they were heavily damaged and thus shit). I quick saved right before a whole bunch of super mutants, including 2 with mini guns came around the corner. Realising there was no way I could take them on because they kill me almost as soon as the fight starts and I didn't have enough ammo I quickly ducked in the metro...bad idea. It was filled with ghouls and caused the game to auto save. The last save I had was several hour earlier.
I know I saved next to a car that was about to explode in a game but I can't remember which one It was. It might have been fallout 3 again actually. Damn that game.

Worst save of all time huh. Well my first thought was Rob Green in the World Cup against the US, so I was a little off the mark.

OT: Had many interesting saves in the Halo games. Get to a checkpoint whilst being in the air (most likely due to some warthog tomfoolery), and then plummet to my death, again and again and again.

There was also a particularly bad save that I remember from Baldur's Gate 2 where my quicksave saved a state about half a second before my entire party is hit with a fireball. This was early in the game so the spell had enough power to wipe out half my party, not fun reloading many times to see the fiery death of my party and then having to load from an earlier save and lose some progress.

The one I remember now is when I was playing Arx Fatalis, and it involved a different kind of "careless saving".

I went exploring fairly early in the game, and got to a deep level where there were all these snakewomen (the Snake Sisters, if I remember correctly). I probably took something I was not meant to take, but I got out of that level and resumed the main quest without bing bothered.

Much, much later, I had to recover a vital artifact... that was under the care of the Snake Sisters. I was supposed to ask their queen for it, but they attacked me on sight when I entered their domains. Nothing I could do would make them forgive me for my careless crime many, many game hours before. And I was too weak to simply take them on.

Long story short: I still mean to one day play Arx Fatalis to the end, it was a really good game up until that point...

I've managed to luck out I tend to QS before a major battle. (All the guns and health packs tend to be a dead give away.)

i must say, this is why i like human revolution's load system where you can load the last save, the one before last, or just pick from a list
OT: probably was in MC where it wasnt a save so much as: when you enter the nether the overworld is frozen in time, so you can start tnt, and it wont explode until you get back, so i tntd my entire world (i was bored, MCedit: replace all but air with tnt) set one off, and traveled to the nether to see what it would do about the portal, after 5 minutes in my nether base, i went back, and it asploded in my face, now, this froze my computer, so, quit MC, but the last level.dat save it got in was right as i portaled back, sooo, i can not open that save anymore without a crash :p
or, in MANY, MANY, other games that were concerned about save space, so you got ONE slot per player (max 5 players or so, but you cant save to a different profile) and many, many times, i got a STUPID autosave that would end in death
a memerable one was: it autosaves at this door, and the door forces open to stop players glitching stuff, so the save was 1/1000 of a second before my face got smashed by the door
another one: HL2:EP2
on the lift down to the final scene, i threw random crap in the elevator for fun, and the way the elevator works or prevent the NPCs from jumping around in the lift, they have no collision with eachother. so, the props push Eli just low enough, that when the lift ends, and collision turns back on, eli go DED, and of course i saved 1/2 way down with the last save at the end of the strider battle another one where i parrented gnome chomkowski to alyx's face, and the game crashed if i tried to take him off
