With the ability to "Install" games into your Xbox 360 hard drive, space is becoming a premium. With the PlayStation 3's ability for a user to upgrade their own hard drive, why can't we do the same on Xbox. I realize there is a HUGE "modding" community out there, but everything I've read seems like more hassle than it's worth and could potentially lead to having issues in the future for systems with non-standard drives.

I read up on the PS3 "walkthrough" for upgrading the hard drive and it consisted of:

1. Turn console upside down
2. Open thing that says "Hard Drive"
3. Take out old hard drive
4. Put in new hard drive
5. Turn on system

Microsoft, you're pioneers in the PC world, you're being upstaged by SONY!

I want a bigger 360 hard drive :(

That would be awesome, since after two years my very small 12 gig hard drive is almost full.

If they keep the price points the same, that's going to be ridiculously expensive:

Current 60GB Hard Drive w/ Headset and 3/mo XBL Subscription = $89.99

Taking out $19.99 for the headset and $19.99 for the XBL = $49.99

$50 / 60GB = $0.83/GB

Largest HDD for Xbox 360 = 120GB

4x120GB = 480GB (since this is an illogical size for a HDD, we'll assume 500GB)

500GB x $0.83/GB = $416.67

Roudning down for logical pricepoint means your new Xbox 360 HDD Upgrade will retail for...

...

... ...

$399.99

... annnnnd fail.

I'm shocked you've lasted this long with a 20GB HDD. But my 120 GB is wayyyy more than I need, and I install games to my hard drive quite a bit.

Are you sure about that? Afterall how much is Sony making off selling PS3 HDDs? I am sure MS might feel a bit of humiliation if they weren't to busy counting all the profits they get from HDD sales.

Fair enough, I just hope they don't keep that profit margin in tact for the next hard drive they release. What they really "should" do if they want to keep the profits high and still allow people the freedom that Sony does is to sell the "mounting" portion of the drive. Call it the "HDD Upgrade Kit" and have it include a modular Xbox 360 HDD mounting kit that can accept 2.5" SATA HDD's and an install disc that formats the drive properly, something along that line. Charge $49.99 for it and call it a day.

Wait, what?

Here's how to upgrade your 360 harddrive:

Unclip old harddrive by pushing down on the button

Clip in new harddrive by pushing it in

I don't see the problem?

Maybe I should have rephrased... the process you described limits you to only the drives that Microsoft sells.

THAT'S the problem. They're expensive, small and don't provide much over the 60GB one I have now.

I suppose I get you now. I don't have this problem (I got the MW2 360 with the mammoth 250gb harddrive)

Yeah they did that with Final Fantasy XIII as well. I suspect they're going to release the 250GB HDD as an accessory soon enough, but if it's priced anywhere over $99.99, it's going to be a ripoff.

More to my point in the OP, you can get a 500GB HDD for the PS3 for less than $99.99.

Once again there is no incentive for them to do that. You start out with a 20gb for 200 bucks with console. Soon you find out 20 isn't enough (because you only really had 13). So you fork out the $100 for a 60gb. And of course you soon find out even 60 doesn't let you put every game you own on the HDD meaning you still have to fiddle around deleting stuff. And since the whole 150mb arcade game limit has been fired out the window anything goes. So sooner or later you will be forking out another couple hundred for the next big HDD. And every step of the way MS has us by the short and curlies. They know it we know it and we accept it.

Now you expect them to make and sell a 50 dollar device that will let us upgrade. So we only pay the 50 once and away we go. Sounds great for us consumers but since we have already proven the HDD upgrade division to be a marketable one why would they lose those profits? Why not charge us the 100 bucks then the 250 bucks then the 500 bucks (ya I'm pulling numbers straight outta my ass) but that is 850 bucks gross over 50 bucks gross.

Well aren't you just Mr. Negativity... lol.

I suppose you're looking at install base. I'm sure there are tons of people who would purchase the $50 upgrade bay who wouldn't normally fork out for HDD upgrades and would just "manage" the space they have if their only upgrade option is $100+.

Since we're removing numbers from our rectum, you could say $50 profit on install kit to 1,000,000 people vs. $50 profit on HDD to 100,000 people...?

It's not hurting the 360 that much it seems, but I bought a terabyte hard-drive for £65 a week or so ago, a fucking terabyte.

It's pretty disgusting that the 360 hard-drive's cost that much, considering they can't be that special, and you actually need one to install games and store saved games.

Apparently though, if you're willing enough, you can put your own bigger hard-drive in the 360, a friend of mine sent me a link to a how-to a while ago, I don't have it any more unfortunately.

It's not as simple and easy as the PS3 equivalent, but potentially gets around the idiotic costs.

Yeah I'm pretty pissed about being stuck with a 20 GB HDD and I think the 160 is like a hundred bucks. I can buy a 2TB HDD for that much, that's total bullshit. I hear there's a way to mod it but I'm not about to void my warranty with my 360. I've had WAY too many die for me to screw up something in this thing.

The Xbox 360 uses a 2.5" (read: laptop) SATA HDD, the largest of which, practically speaking, weighs in at 500GB for as little as $70 (the 1TB drives are still in the $200+ range). There are instructions for replacing them yourself but involves lots of external force (PC Hacks, Firmware cooks, "locking" the drive, that sort of nonsense) and can potentially earn you an XBL ban if I'm not mistaken.
