The year of the Sequel?

There is no denying that 2011 is going to be PACKED with sequels. Here is a small list of what I can think of for the first half of the year.

Portal 2
Gears of War 3
A new Assassin's Creed has been teased at
Elder Scrolls: Skyrim
ANOTHER Mortal Kombat
Duke Nuke'em
Crysis 2
And Socom 4, those are just what I can come up with off the top of my head.

But I can't seem to come up with any Original Games. So, what do you think Escapist? Is 2011 the most Sequel heavy Year in gaming? And What is your opinion on Sequels?

I think they are just fine, as long as it makes sense and the first game was good enough to deserve a sequel.

oh yeah, I forgot about those. but does it balance out the ratio? Still really thick on the sequel end. But those 3 games that you mentioned are truly stunning. LA Noire is a good step forward for games.

Dark Souls is looking like it'll be my game of the year and it's only a spiritual sequel which doesn't really count because it's basically just admitting where the designers got their inspiration.

But yeah there are a couple of true sequels I'm looking forward to, Dungeon Siege 3 and Infamous 2 namely.

Haven't the last three years been 'The Year of the Sequel'? In my opinion, this year has some of the best sequels to date coming (or already) out: Dead Space 2, Dragon Age 2, Duke Nukem: Forever, Red Faction: Armageddon, Gears 3, Mass Effect 3........... I could go on and on.

Breach, Brink, From Dust, Bulletstorm, Last Guardian, LA Noire, Dead Island. There's no shortage of new ideas in the game industry.

There's always lots of sequels. Remember the 6 Megaman games on the NES?

Really? It felt so long ago. You're right then. Homefront was a pretty good online game from what I've heard.

Original gaming IPs are hard to create. The point of most games is to set up a believable, Interesting world. If ti succeeds why WOULDN'T it get a sequel. In other words, I have nothing against sequels...... TO A CERTAIN POINT, ofcourse [looks in pity at Sonic's mercilessly beaten corpse]

OT: to be accurate, 2011 and 2012 will be the years of "Third and/or Final Installments"...

Point proven? 3: The sequel to Yes, I think so.

This is technically a GREAT thing, cause, if all of these series' wrap-up, 2013-2015 should see a BOOM of New IP's popping up to fill the gap, starting another 6-8 year cycle of Series'.

I don't particularly mind. Hell, some of my favourite games are sequels.
