So I was reading a couple of articles on Massively (link below):

http://www.massively.com/2010/10/06/braaaaainssss-first-details-about-undead-labs-zombie-mmo-revea/#comments

And would like to know what you guys think about this? A console based MMO.

Let me start by saying, for me, the premise of a Zombie Game without the ability to build defensive structurea and actually survive would make the whole experience 1 dimensional.

Besides the whole 'more action, less maths' (which to be honest I am fed up with in MMOs) argument what is it that you think a console based MMO will bring to the market? Do you think that it will work?

I am a PC guy through and through but see the appeal of something different.

I for one am looking forward to their direction, I am just praying that they dont go so anti-PC that the idea of a port is out of the question.

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Console MMOs are difficult to pull off because of how difficult it is to use the in-game keyboard.

I'd be willing to try it though.

I would highly doubt that would happen. Since the studio making this game, are former members of ArenaNet, who made Guild Wars which is PC-only. (they left becuase they wanted to make another game and I believe they said they still talk to each other)

I'm actually rather frustrated because my friend and I had almost EXACTLY this idea and were going to work on it.

Expect a WoW clone where all the enemies are Zombies or other Freaks
Being a little cynical aren't we?

I'm just wondering if they'll try and make it scary or if it'll be more of a light-hearted Dead Rising kind of feel. Though if you can board up into a house, it makes it difficult to put traffic cones on zombies' heads.

MMO's make the most money on the PC. I'm kind of surprised to hear that they are trying to dip into the Console market again.

Whatever, sounds like something I wouldn't buy into.

Now, a console game with a zombie mmorpg...

This might actually work.

If the atmosphere and starting screen will eat people up, likewise the tension in the game and won't be blocky, you can get people to stay and to join.

And since you could perfect a controller to have the same standards as a keyboard, there won't be such major issues with controls.
They better make the game addictive and thrilling, since that is probably what they need to aim for if this is to survive in the long run.

Zombies are the flavour of the week (or rather last few years), and the overuse of them being forced at us by corporations is going to get very old, very fast.

Dead Rising kinda conquered the Zombie market anyways, they just need to work hard at improving that game. Instead of a Zombie MMO, maybe they should do a horror MMO or mummy MMO or something different and vaguely original for the time.

If they included one of those typing things, you can plug into your controller, I'd definitely try it out. Console MMOs seem like they'd be a pain to communicate through. Sure you can use voice chat...but I certainly don't want to be forced to talk to people who I don't trust yet...that's how eardrums bleed.

And there's the big, glowing problem. They will probably struggle to differentiate themselves from the Left 4 Dead games. While this is less of a problem for the PS3, there's also the question of latency. Honestly? I'm going to be forecasting another APB on this one.

it seems as though my prayers have been answered, looks like it has the best of both worlds: alll the variety of a PC MMO, survival and console gameplay

i dont see the appeal of PC MMOs, click on something to attack it and the whole concept of someone being infinitly more powerful than another player because they are a higher level. leveling up should bring rewards but not make you unbeatable

im hoping that everyone will be allies in this game and have a real sense of community

I honestly want to be optimistic about this. If they do it right, we have basically what every armchair-zombie hunter has been craving since he saw Dawn of the Dead for the first time: an open-world, persistent-environment zombie SURVIVAL game (as opposed to zombie splatter-fest fare like L4D or RE). It would give every zombie-obsessed gamer the opportunity to put his crowbar where his mouth is and prove that his anti-corpse defenses are the best. I'm not even going to rag on it being a console-only game; we've come a long way since PSO, and the "controller keyboard" issue is no longer a problem on current-gen systems. Provided they make the crafting and planning systems easy and intuitive to use, I don't see a problem with using a controller instead of a keyboard and mouse.

That being said, I'd be foolish to invest my optimism blindly into the concept. There are so very, very many ways for this to go wrong. Server connection issues. Bad design flaws. The so-called "APB Effect" (great idea, horrible outcome). Lack of support. A crafting system that either doesn't allow for enough creativity or is too awkward to use. I could go on, but I'm sure there's no need; we're all worrying about the same things.

I hope this does become the reason (or one of the reasons) I buy a current-gen console, I really do. But I'm not getting my hopes up until they start showing actual gameplay pics and design mechanics.
