Wait, wait, hold up.

Hammer time.
/sigh
Someone isn't going to realize this is a joke, and come in screaming OMGSTARFOXYOUSTUPIDNOOB! I hope you're ready for a sea of notification messages. :p
I never joke. I am as serious as a pedophile having a heart attack.

I had a Mega-Drive/Genesis when I was growing up which is probably why I am incapable of humour/love.

Anything Dragon Age, Mass Effect, KOTOR, and most console AAA games in general (Due to me not owning a newer age console for reasons of lack of interest).

Considering how sleep deprived I am, it's not surprising that I actually have no idea whether or not to believe you. You're telling me that you have no idea that 'Do a barrel roll' comes from Star Fox?

My sister finally watched Avatar: TLA in the last few weeks, and she's saying "I finally understand x now". As for me, there's a lot I'm out of the loop on, but I'm the type who goes and looks something up if I don't get it.

I don't watch really any anime now and haven't bought many new games, nor played really any shooters so most of that stuff I don't get. Also being a little older and not teaching in high schools anymore, I don't know a lot of the current lingo and have had to look some up.

There's a meme for "do a barrel roll"?
Yes, just check Google [https://www.google.com/?q=do+a+barrel+roll]. I don't really know much about it but at least I heard of it a couple of years ago.

Shit, I thought it was from the end of this...

On topic. two words that just sound crap, like "do people actually say this?", I consider them to be on the level of "swag" and "yolo".

Those two words are "janky" and "ganking"! When somebody says "these controls are janky" or "I'm being ganked" I feel like a blind guy when somebody says "my favorite colour is red".

I didn't hear "arrow in the knee" until my second trip through Skyrim, but by then it was ubiquitous. I wondered if there was a system update involved.

Funnily enough I noticed a marked decreased in the frequency of that particular line over time. It used to be every other thing the guards said when Skyrim first came out, now it's a real rare occurrence if I hear it uttered. Methinks an update was definitely involved. Thankfully.

OT: I usually completely miss memes. I'm sure there's still a huge tonne of them that I don't get. I still don't know what the Harlem Shake is. Nor do I particularly care.

I missed a load of Mahvel references for a few months, Maximum Wesker, Dark Wesker, (WEEESSSSKKKKEEERRRRRR!) yeah the DW phase in the meta was NOT fun T_T

Even now I still don't get why people HATE Phoenix. Apparently she was broken in Vanilla but she's so BAD in Ultimate that you surely must forgive people who still persevere with her right?

I got the INFERNO DIVVVIIIIDAHHHH!!!! Meme in BlazBlue though... All too quickly.

[sub]Fucking Rags[/sub]
Don't forget all the Ice Car memes. There are actually a lot of memes about BlazBlue for some reason. Some of the best are the character flowcharts like this one:

OT: Usually if something like that goes over my head I look it up right away, so I am not kept in the dark all that long.

Anything Nintendo related. Pokemon, Zelda, Super Mario etc.

Final Fantasy, Tried to play Nine once (when it was released for the PC) found out they don't know what "game" means.

Despite being an avid gamer, I rarely use the internet for anything other than work. A good 95% of this forum goes WAY over my head. Seriously, what the feck are you all on about? Some of the posts, even on this thread, might as well be Japanese to me.

No, I haven't felt terribly out of place.
Why? "Meh, memes".

That's really all there is to it. These catchy lines and "jargon" are just memes, and most often serve no purpose except as a means of entry or affirmation of belonging in gaming culture.

Really, the psychology behind meme culture is more interesting than the culture itself.

Do you really need to get "annoyed with your ignorance" before googling something?

Don't ever ask me anything Legend of Korra, Legend of Zelda, or Final Fantasy. I'm not familiar with any of them.

Not really game related, but you know all those emoticons that are used on the internet?

I don't know what the fuck 90% of those things mean or what they represent.

I also don't know crap about Star Trek or DnD or comics. Or Game of Thrones or Walking Dead or Breaking Bad or whatever TV show the internet is into now.

I never played a single Mass Effect game, so the "assuming control" and the "best station in the Citadel meme" went over my head. After the Mass Effect 3 debacle, I'm not sure I'd even touch a finger on that game.

Also, ASSUMING CONTROL.
I just finished ME3 (got it last week), it's not nearly as bad as I was expecting. The series does suffer from a serious case of getting simpler (not easier, just removing functionality) with each game though.

OT: I tend to be aware of most gaming memes, though I only very rarely play the games myself. My roommate however manages to stay blissfully unaware of nearly all gaming memes (despite being an avid gamer as well)
Original space magic with unexplained logic ending that seemed to think that telling you how your actions affected the world after the end was unimportant ending or not nearly as terrible DLC Extended Cut space magic with explained logic that actually tells you what happened to the galaxy after you beat the game ending? To say that may have affected your experience would be an undersatement, unless you're extremely forgiving, that is.

It's funny because every game in those listed franchises are available for PC (in the case of Dragon Age developed for the PC) which makes not having played them because you don't own a console a non-excuse.

OT:
"The cake is a lie" and anything Portal related in general. Never played the games and don't want to, no interest in puzzle-platformers.
