So here is my theory
I think that the G-Man is the actual administrator for Black Mesa, and that Breen was just put there cus the G-Man likes to be super mysterious and stuff and can actually teleport himself across the universe and crazy ass stuff like that. In the original half life you see him with a Black Mesa Briefcase and so i got to thinking.

Anyway, give me your rebuttal and your alternate theories if you should feel so inclined.

I support the Gordon Freeman is G-man theory. Green eyes, similar cheek bones, and Gordon starts with G. I hope at the end of the series that we get to hear Gordon Freeman speak, and it will be with the same speech impediment that the G-man has.

I don't want to solve the mystery of the G-Man. What makes him such a popular character is his obscurity, vagueness, and trans-human nature. To demystify that is not in my interests as far as the game's story goes.

He's an alien, there are many things that give him away. He's not Gordon Freeman, and he's called the GMan because it is short for Government Man, which I believe was taken from his origional model name. And problems with your theory:
1) Why does Eli and everyone know Breen as the Administrator when they would have been working there also.
2) Why does he have the speech problem?
3) How does he control the portals and such?
Just some critisism.

Isn't the G-man only called that because the fans thought of it?
No, G-Man was the name assigned to him by the developers. I believe it was the name of his model.

Honestly, I gave up caring who G-Man is, and am going to wait another 10 years or so for ep3 to find out. Hopefully. However I don't think he was the administrator, because He doesn't appear to actually have worked for Black Mesa. He was only there to cause the Resonance Cascade.

What, are people not allowed to have speech impediments now?

Uh... no one knows him as the administrator.

This theory isn't the worst I've heard (seriously, saying the GMan and Gordon Freeman are one in the same is so freakin' STUPID) but considering that Breen is called the administrator and references the GMan at the end of Half Life 2 (talking about Gordon's contract) it wouldn't make much sense. Especially since the GMan seems to be assisting, to an extent, with the defeat of the Combine.

EDIT: Since I couldn't come up with any really good rebuttles, I'll quote this:

Excellent points.

It would be interesting to find who who G-Man actually is, but I think it would be better just to keep it a secret so it can always keep us guessing.

It's to unnatural to be a speech impediment I find. I mean if you can show me one that sounds like that then maybe I'd be more acceptent to the fact that he is human, but I am convinced he is an alien especially after what the Nihilanth said.

Ye the G-man being Gordon idea is stupid, Sure some features are similar, but thats just the design for facial amination. If G-man really was Freeman, they why the resonance casade and all the other crap that happens to Gordon. ANd while they do have portal tech, timetravel is not yet been used.

The G-man seems like the iconic Man in Black minus sunglasses, if you've ever heard about the original reports of men in black, they dress in suits and speak improperly, as if they aren't actually human.

I think he's everyone's real fear. He embodies what people are afraid of. He seems to want to kill Alyx, Gordon's fear is of her death. He is probably the cat, Barney's case. Ect.

I always thought he was some kind of alien, maybe from a possible third party in the whole Xen/Earth conflict. The way he talks makes him sound a bit like some kind of mercenary, which leads me to believe he might be some kind of "reality manipulator for hire" who got hired by Earth, and assumed the form of the G-Man because he thought it might make him easier for Gordon to trust (though they're almost always suspected of engaging in shady business, government agents aren't usually questioned when they ask someone to do something, simply because they command such a high level of authority).

If anyone needs proof on why the Gman isn't Freeman, this video brings up points as to why he can't be.

The irrefutable: He is some kind of power broker/diplomat. Perhaps he has a boss or perhaps he is freelance. His goals are not Combine friendly.

The likely: He isn't human. From the transporting/appliance controlling (The unplugged television in Half-Life 2) it can be seen he has some unclassified tech. Not to mention the strange voice patterns and mannerisms.

Possible: His goals are not exactly human friendly either. Perhaps he is just balancing out the galactic powers or he is pushing to where his own race can fill the vacuum the decimation of the combines would leave behind. Likely to rely more on foresight than his time-bending technology.

The unlikely: Administrates Black Mesa

The idiotic: Gordon Freeman is G-Man.

Edit: How about Breen being the advisor
that tried to mind-mug you and Alyx in Episode 1, killed Eli, and damn near brained you halfway through Episode 2
for a theory? You see Breen discussing with an advisor at the end of Half-Life 2 and agreeing to be put into another body, right? And then at the opening of Episode 1 Valve is still having Breen relevant by having him fly by on that monitor. And that advisor did seem to be a little bit vendetta-driven for a race that is obviously focused on the bigger picture...

He was called G-Man short for Glass-Man, which Valve called him because in HL1 he was often found looking at you behind glass. My theory is that he's related to you, which explains the physical similarities.

Oh yeah, he can't be Freeman because at the end of HL1 G-Man offers you the choice of life or death, but if you picked death G-Man would be essentially committing suicide.

He seems to be just a messenger to some higher power that doesn't want the world to end.

Then again, I only played HL2 and the story is very confusing.

I always thought he was some sort of cosmic reaper staking his claim on peoples worth long before they have actually had their time to shine, a behind the scenes trouble maker sort of like Flagg (the man in black) who recurs in several Stephen king novels.

Ok, the hair bit aside, there isn't really any clear proof they aren't the same person. I mean some freaky stuff happens in those games, you've got to admit it's possible.
Also, back to the hair argument it raises, genes can be changed. It happens a lot. It's called cancer. I'm just saying that maybe his genes can be altered in the futuristic world it's set in. I mean gravity guns aren't exactly possible now, are they?
Also, still on the hair point, maybe in the future he likes getting his hair cut that way to screw with the minds of fanboys.

Yeah, I totally thought that too.
