I think "government man" covers it quite nicely. The combine has its interdimensional "thing" while the GMan is working his own ends in conjunction with "other entities" He knew what was going on at black mesa and just how to bend those events to advance his own agenda, and came out of it with the capability to warp space and time and travel through portals; behind glass through most of HL1... until the end, then hes just kind of there. I swear ive caught glimpses of him in HL2, like in the water craft level I saw him up on the dam...

As smart as gordon is, a scientist and all, he is used by the gman as quite the blunt instrument in the HL2 series.

If anyone needs proof on why the Gman isn't Freeman, this video brings up points as to why he can't be.

I dont love HL or anything, but I can tell you two (possible) flaws in his arguement:
1. I doubt Valve was thinking about genetics when they desided (if they did) that Gordan was G-Man.
2. He says that G-Man would not want Gordan dead if he were gordan, but:
a. He may be suicidal or
b. He may have been told the same thing and not wanted to fuck anything up.
I personally like the G(ordan Free)Man theroy, but I will not make wild assumtions and not see any other way.

Oh yeah, he can't be Freeman because at the end of HL1 G-Man offers you the choice of life or death, but if you picked death G-Man would be essentially committing suicide.
Paradox? G-Man KNOWS that he'll choose life, because G-man was asked the same question when he was Freeman.

I think he is an alien in a human disguise, or even an alien in a human body (the opposite to what seems to have happened to Breen) The way he talks is like a person who knows english, but doesn't speak it enough to understand speach structure properly. He seems to be a intergalactic merc pimp, offering gordon to highest bidder

For one, as many people in the post, believe he's not human (maybe alien, energy or supernatural). He could also be in Gordon's head because I haven't seen anyone else feel he's presence, let alone talk to him. So, I tend to think he's more supernatural than anything else. Now, correct me if I'm wrong on this.

I think that I hate these "G-Man" threads, mainly because we will not know for the foreseeable future. Oh well, some people like these I guess...

I'm not supporting any real theory here, but keep in mind the fact that G-man gives Gordon a choice at the end of HL1 does not mean they cannot be the same person. HL2 would not have happened if Gordon did not choose to enter stasis, that decision is canon. Personally I think it would be very, very cool if there was some way the two were related, but I doubt it will happen.

He does seem to use Gordan as a mercenary. At the end of half-life he state that "we" control Zen but dosn't specify who we is. Also in half-life 2 he manipulates events behind the scenes to allow Gordan to attack the combine. But since Gordan has escaped, G-man may become more aggressive as his plans deviate from his desires.

Actually, I think it would be better to not explain it at all. Some things are better off left unsaid.

I'm sure I've posted this before, but hey. The G-Man is actually...
Geoff Freeman, Gordon's evil twin brother. They were separated at birth; Geoff went to Xen whereas Gordon went to Earth. So now you know. The truth is finally out.

They certainly do enjoy it. That's what the folks at Valve and the LOST people have in common, they love to keep you guessing. I think the series should leave at least one thing to the imagination, and the G-Man is a good option.

Anyone else out there think that GMan may be working against the Combine and humans? Maybe the Combine are also at war with another intergalactic empire and the Gman is from that one trying to divert the Combine's attention from them to their colonies. That or the Gman just wants to fuck things up! And you missed the better point in that video, for those who missed it, if GMan is Gordon, why would he offer Gordon a chance to die in the first HL? At the very end you are given a choice between working for him or fighting in a battle you can't win.

I had a theory that seemed right, but I forgot it a while ago.
However, in the beginning of HL2 in Kleiner's lab theres someone crossed out on his portrait near the transporter room.
Perhaps the G-Man was once human? I dunno.

That was the photo from Black Mesa and I'm pretty sure it was Breen.

And I used to have a theory that perhaps the Gman was a figment of Gordon's imagination brought on by stress. That was possible until Eli referred to him as our mutual friend... Either that or he was talking about Kliener! ZING!
