If socks do disappear in mini-black holes then my house is where they come out. Seriously you cant go through one day without finding at least one sock somewhere
Obviously the socks are sacrifices to the laundry gods.

Did you count the number of socks before and after the dryer, or are you just assuming one disappeared because you have an odd number? My theory is that one sock is actually CREATED during the drying cycle. It is the sock's method of reproduction, when they get warm and agitated one sock will spawn another one via binary fission.
On a similar note, where does the bread go when you put it in the toaster? A few minutes after you push the lever toast pops out, but where did the original bread go?

The dryer sacrifices a sock to its god by ripping out the fabric on the big toe.With enough time,the sock unravels itself into a single,long thread and gets sucked into the holes on the side of the dryer where the incinerator takes care of business.

I have always thought it was because of people who don't pay attention.
This could be because of mothers... who do so many loads of laundry a week that they just don't care any more... or single people who used to have said mothers... now they don't know how to do laundry so they throw clothes in, take clothes out... and don't bother to check for extra fabric clinging to the walls.

They then use a collection of the stolen socks to find matching pairs, which they then sell. This is why people who leave their socks lying around are more likely to lose them, as there is less water damage to the tracking device.
Mine, on the other hand, never go missing, cause I eat them.
