Check out this list by cracked, it contains lots of radio-related freakiness.

http://www.cracked.com/article_18381_the-5-creepiest-unexplained-broadcasts_p1.html

The russian one is probably the freakiest to me, people speculate it's somehow involved in the "Dead Hand" system which was basically the russians way of ensuring that nobody fucks with them. If someone would launch nuclear strikes and wipe out russia that signal would stop and if it stopped for a longer duration second-strike missiles would be automatically launched. :S Of course it's just a rumor but you never know with those crazy russians.

If you don't want to sleep tonight you can read about the system here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_Hand_(nuclear_war)

The TV hijack from the list are hilarious though. If it weren't so far back in time i would suspect 4chan to be involved. Seems like something they would do.

About a week ago I was staying over a friend of mine's house. It was about 2 in the morning and we were just fucking around with an old radio. We then got a weird, sort of The Ring-esque signal consisting of some static and a bit of what sounded like someone speaking in a foreign language, followed by beeping and more static. It also looped every 5 minutes or so. After about 15 minutes or so we just got a bit too creeped out and turned it off.

I just now found out that these mysterious signals are called "numbers signals" and were used in WW2 and the Cold War for use in espionage. Apparently an obscure government radio station could send an encrypted message in a mix of what seems like Morse, random music, and other obscure sounds.

Apparently many of these channels are still broadcasting.

Here is an especially creepy numbers station recording I found on YouTube.
Try listening to this with the lights out at midnight...
OP...it's german! She is saying some numbers.

edit: 12345678701234567890 (if i didnt misheard)

edit 2: Sorry, it's "1234567890" (two times). I couldn't understand it right the first time since the woman is NOT a native german. It's not some austrian or swiss dialect either, from the pronounciation i'd say english speaking.

I'm probably just tired, but I found that really funny.

OT: For anyone interested in this type of recording, you can legally obtain a number of them through archive.org.

The Conet Project makes for some good nighttime listening.

Numbers stations are freaky as shit. I've got a Fallout 3 creepypasta that involves them here if you want to see the kind of things it is rumoured they broadcast: http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/3845/strangefalloutinfoforwa.jpg
What in the fuck?!

That is insanely creepy. I have the chills bad now. It's daytime and everything. *shivers*

She does say that for most of the transmission but near the end I noticed that she was rambling off some random numbers. Cookie of you can translate them.

I used to have on of those chairs that had speakers built in to it, and, when my television was off, Thai news broadcasts were faintly being played through the speakers. It was really creepy.

Seriously, that's an ice cream truck. What else could it be?
One of those old wind-up music boxes that little girls used to own?

Heh. I bet that's a comforting thought.

Didn't listen to the end the first times, thought its always the same.

It starts with:
18, 1, 7, 2, 7,7, 1,7,2,7,7,18

Then you get this weird noises, which make the first numbers unrecognizable. She then says a series of numbers until the end, with a little break

?,?,?,?,1,7,7,5,8,1,9,9,9,9,1,9,9,9,9,2,2,2,2,7,2,2,2,2,7,8,1,8,7,1,8,1,8,7,1,5,4,1,9,8,5,4,1,9,8 [small pause] 2,8,9,5,6,2,8,9,5,6 (and some more numbers...)

"ende" (end)
