I probably could've shoehorned this into my thread on metal if I'd really wanted to, but I'd likely have gotten shouted down by the masses had I tried. (While Slipknot and metalcore bands get a free ride. Go figure.)

Metal he isn't, but I've always loved Manson. Even the fatty, washed up Manson of circa 2009. And he sounds better now than he has in awhile, though I thought 2012's Born Villain was a solid release. For that matter, I dug Eat Me, Drink Me a lot more than the critical consensus. I won't try to defend The High End Of Low, however.

His vocals are an acquired taste, but I like them. Bizarrely, he reminds me of a nightclub singer in some jazzy, smoke-filled room in the 1940s. Probably not as sexy, though.

The last few releases have been less power-chord-driven shock rock and more eclectic post-punk or old school gothic rock, if you're into that sort of thing.

In that thread there was only like 2 metalcore bands and one Slipknot (who like it or not, are metal). Metal is metal dude.

Anyways, Marilyn Manson has always been very hit and miss with me. His music was never super shocking or anything. The music in the new song was very good, but his vocals weren't so great. But he's never been a very strong vocalist anyways.

This was apparently released in the credits of a new television show I've never watched.

Pretty solid stuff, all three. I'm officially excited for the new record.

Shit, the last time I listened to -- or heard from -- Marilyn Manson, Jessika Addams (Jack Off Jill, Scarling) was relevant. I've got Google Play, so I'll give his post-2004 stuff a listen later on. May as well keep an open mind.

Got through listening to Slipknot's latest album and by Lyssa's lying heart do I regret it. So much melodrama and whiny bullshit I mistook it all for the vocalist's family and bandmates were hitting him in the nutsack with 9-irons while he did his thing. I'm a metalhead that doesn't mind listening to nu-metal, metalcore or anything that end in -core, and I believe this atrocity doesn't deserve a free ride.. It just rubs em the wrong way, like a masseuse with dry, calloused hands rubbing my shoulders after taking a toilet-clogging shit.

edit: fixed a fragment.

You might as well do yourself a favor and skip from Eat Me, Drink Me straight to Born Villain. I'm a fan and I'll readily admit that the High End album was shit, written after the girl he'd left his wife for left him in turn. The former definitely requires an open mind, but it's pretty strong, with the exception of a few extraneous tracks towards the end like "Mutilation Is The Most Sincere Form Of Flatter". Born Villain rules. Check this out.

Also, Jessicka is fucking awesome. Jack Off Jill rocks. Scarling rocks. Has she not done anything of late?

Two songs she made in 2013. Her old edge is gone, but then again, she's long since matured, so it's kinda expected:

I'll probably be in the minority here but I've enjoyed pretty much all of his stuff, for me its either pretty good or excellent when it comes to his music. His music resonates well with me and I like his style of voice.

Looking forward to seeing how this album shapes up, hope its one of the stronger renditions, born villan was pretty good and I like cupid carries a gun. Third day is ok as well.

I thought everything save The High End Of Low has been good to great, and even that record had its moments, such as "I Have To Look Up Just To See Hell".

The problem, I think, is that the album-buying public wants him to be power-chord schlock rock like Rob Zombie. He isn't, and I'm eternally grateful for it.

The day he releases an album that deliberately emulates Antichrist Superstar is the day I stop being a fan. No two Manson albums sound alike, and they shouldn't, either. And I think he has too much artistic integrity to make his version of Welcome 2 My Nightmare or Hellbilly Deluxe 2, no matter how the moronic moshers clamour for it.

I agree with those sentiments. I especially wouldn't want that since I got into him when born villan came out and went back through his stuff from then. I can't really compare the albums that much because I find each album suits a different mood I'm in and I'll seek them out at different times. I also think his lyrics have more going for them then a lot of metal.

Unpopular opinion: I like Manson more than NIN. Which is relevant given the intertwining histories of both bands.

I think the very best thing Trent did, The Fragile, is marginally better than the best thing Manson's done, Holy Wood, though only slightly.

Of their most comparable records, I think Antichrist Superstar kicks The Downward Spiral in the teeth. TDS is like the mopey metrosexual artiste pining after bad boy rocker ACSS' girlfriend.

The Slip was not as purely bad as The High End Of Low, but more boring somehow. Born Villain destroys Hesitation Marks, which sounds like a NIN cover band, or maybe fucking Gravity Kills.

Trent is unquestionably a better musician and composer, but he has a Hell of a time making his music interesting or fun.

That's not the musically correct opinion - Trent is suposed to be the super-serious maestro who scores shitty films, while Manson has trouble staying sober long enough to complete a BBC interview - but it is mine.
