I was wondering... I think you'd all agree some games were more influential to gaming history than others. While some games merely fade away into oblivion (no pun intended there), others become iconic landmarks that completely changed games as we know them. What games would you say completely changed the face of the industry? Which games just changed everything in your opinion?

Edit: I forgot, Secondary objective: identify the quote :D

Altough I have only seen some hype from Fallout 3, I think that has to be it. An RPG in a post apocalyptic world. I like the idea, I like it a lot. So much that I'm considering buying the game.

Ah yes, an armored space marine. A totally different face from previous games.

Change by genre or to non-gamers? For non-gamers, The Sims was the first to start really breaking into that market. Diablo destro-er, changed RPG's forever. Dune 2 broke turn-based strategy games into RTS forever. And yeah, for FPS, I'm gonna go with Quake.

Can't beleive no one mentioned Half Life yet. That really knocked the bar up a good few miles and to be honest... I think that Halo is just living in its shadow.

From a console perspective I'll agree with you, the entire genre in total? No, I believe Half Life did that. And it has spawned some of the most popular full games to date (Counter Strike and Team Fortress just a few examples)

EDIT: to answer the guy below me, Halo wasn't even the first online console shooter. It was just the first POPULAR and marketed online console shooter. People are retarded and closed minded if they try to argue Halo brought anything but a popular online console community.

How was Halo defining apart from being the first console on line shooter? Serious question. It was brilliantly cinematic, which is nice but not worthy of the above comments in my opinion. It didn't bring things on leaps and bounds in terms of story telling or complexity, that accolade goes to Half Life years before.

Back to the topic, apart from Half Life which I've just mentioned, there's not been much since Doom/Wolfenstein which you could say has REALLY changed the industry.

Deus Ex was a very good game don't get me wrong, but I'd class it as one of the forgotten classics, it did just kind of fade away.

I hope that's being deliberately obtuse. Either that or I'm calling you on that the next time you grouse about regenerating health in games.

Warcraft, Starcraft, Halo, Grand theft auto. Warcraft for creatings millions of people who happily throw their lives away for a bunch of ones and zeros. Starcraft for becoming something of a national sport in Korea. Halo, for making EVERY fps nowadays about a guy in the future, fighting aliens with insane shield and health regeneration. Grand Theft Auto took open-world and crime games to a new level.

Quotes from Dark Knight. I would have to say bioshock really raised the bar for story telling. I've never played a game more compelling only because of its story.

It wasn't groundbreaking in that the protagonist changed the face of gaming, but it was the one of the first big games to actually give players in FPSs large, open spaces instead of cramped hallways.

I choose to see Halo as a bridge game between health stats and abandoning the concept entirely as in the Call of Duty games. If you're going to have their health grow back after 7 or so seconds, you might as well just abandon health entirely.
