Warcraft, Starcraft, Halo, Grand theft auto. Warcraft for creatings millions of people who happily throw their lives away for a bunch of ones and zeros. Starcraft for becoming something of a national sport in Korea. Halo, for making EVERY fps nowadays about a guy in the future, fighting aliens with insane shield and health regeneration. Grand Theft Auto took open-world and crime games to a new level.
GTA now there's one, I don't remember sandbox games in that style before GTA, never mind taking it to a new level.

As for Halo though, EVERY FPS used to be about a guy in the future fighting aliens. The regenerating health was new admittedly, its just a shame every other game copied it.

Ah yes, an armored space marine. A totally different face from previous games.
It wasn't groundbreaking in that the protagonist changed the face of gaming, but it was the one of the first big games to actually give players in FPSs large, open spaces instead of cramped hallways.
I believe Unreal gets that award in gaming history.

Pretty much.
Which is why I said it was one of the first.

Halo was a sub-par PC shooter. Change your post to say that it changed the face of the console FPS and I'll reconsider your proposition.

From a console perspective I'll agree with you, the entire genre in total? No, I believe Half Life did that. And it has spawned some of the most popular full games to date (Counter Strike and Team Fortress just a few examples)

EDIT: to answer the guy below me, Halo wasn't even the first online console shooter. It was just the first POPULAR and marketed online console shooter. People are retarded and closed minded if they try to argue Halo brought anything but a popular online console community.
I think he was referring to the fact that every shooter after Halo was essentially the same; regenerating health, aliens, space marines, protagonist who can take 20 nine inch nails (no pun intended) to the chest and still not die.

The same with World of Warcraft, mmorpgs after it were all about the same thing as WoW.

Jurassic Park: Trespasser...I believe that was the game that invented regenerating health, and you got to see cleavage when you check your status :p.

What did gears of war change...? I'm just...a bit lost there...
It's the game that brought this huge emphasis on cover techniques into the foreground. Hardly any games had a cover system before Gears.

I'm really stunned that mentioning the word "Halo" Brought to me such a harsh lash back

I personally like halo, go ahead and burn me for my opinion differing from Yahtzee... I can feel your hatered from here

but you're right, the PC was'nt affected by halo nearly as much as the consoles were

I feel that the console and the PC are two very different territories. Halo did for the console what Half-Life did for the PC.

Don't get so worked up, you started a thread about games that changed the history of gaming. It'd be boring if we all agreed on who did what and how. Hell, I thought Army of Two was a huge breakthrough in co-op gameplay mechanics, but I doubt anyone is going to agree with me on it.

You still didn't explained how halo changed things.
I think I did...

And I agree with him, eventhough it's largely overhyped it's still fun to play. True it's not the god amongst games as sales rates would show but it's fun, has a largely quite cool fanbase and still enjoys support from the devs.

Altough I have only seen some hype from Fallout 3, I think that has to be it. An RPG in a post apocalyptic world. I like the idea, I like it a lot. So much that I'm considering buying the game.
What exactly do you feel it's going to do that other games will imitate?

Personally I feel that RPG's rarely influence future RPGs (Diabalo clones excepted).
Thus my list for games like this would be:
The Legend of Zelda
Dune 2
Doom
Half-Life
Halo
Goldeneye
GTA

*Sigh* Some people...

In any case, Last I checked, the FPS market on the console was borderline nonexistant before halo came out... Name one Decent FPS for the consoles that came out before Halo

and don't you dare say golden eye...

Erm...I might have to check release dates on this, but Red Faction? The brainchild of destructable enviornments in FPS's?
