EDIT: I mean, Do I really need to go into more detail? It completely changed the face of the FPS
I dont hate halo, its a good game, but it realy didn't do anything innovative.
(I chalenge you to prove me wrong)
Half Life2 is proberly one of the most influential games imo.
Great story telling, Great gameplay, and amazing graphics (for its time)

Lastly no game can realy be said its the most influential, most games take things from other games and add there own little peices to evolve gaming in general.

I'm really stunned that mentioning the word "Halo" Brought to me such a harsh lash back

I personally like halo, go ahead and burn me for my opinion differing from Yahtzee... I can feel your hatered from here

but you're right, the PC was'nt affected by halo nearly as much as the consoles were
You still didn't explained how halo changed things.
Grenade button, melee button and regenerating shields. And it was one of the big games that put the Xbox on the map. While I'm aware that those ideas have probably been used before in some niche games, this was the first to bring these ideas to the masses.

Oh yes, and the sheer amount of networking and stats maintained on bungie.net for Halo 3 is amazing. Seriously, check it out. From there I can find out anything, including that I could own Soulja Boy at Halo 3. I can even find out who I played and what my K/D spread was on my first ever game. And what my preferred weapon was.

I'd have to say that Prince of Persia started a new genre. Which is now being shown in more games like Assassin's Creed and the upcoming Mirror's Edge. Hopefully more will come out because I really enjoy playing those kinds of games.

I was surprised nobody mentioned "The Prince" yet.

Melee button was in Duke Nukem 3D, not exactly a niche game.

Some games of which I think have been a great influence:

-Table Tennis (Magnavox Odyssey, 1972): influenced Pong, which popularized gaming for the first time.

-Zork I (various computers, 1980): raised the bar for Interactive Fiction, which would later inspire graphic adventure games and storytelling in general.

-Donkey Kong (Arcade, 1981): the first game of legend Shigeru Miyamoto

-Pitfall (Atari 2600, 1982): the very first platformer.

-Super Mario Bros. (NES, 1985): revitalized the video game market after the crash, popularized one of gaming's greatest icons, was the first sidescrolling platformer, was the key to the NES's succes and much more.

-The Legend of Zelda (FDS/NES, 1986): the first Action/Adventure that truly placed you in a huge world with a lot of depth and dungeons to explore. It also spawned one of the greatest video game franchises.

-Dragon Warrior (NES, 1989): set the tone for JRPG's and was an inspiration for Final Fantasy.

-Wolfenstein 3D (originally DOS PC's, 1992): first first person shooter, a genre that is still extremely popular even today.

-Mortal Kombat (originally arcade, 1992): started the whole "video games are bad" thing and caused the creation of rating systems.

-Super Mario 64 (N64, 1996): revolutionarized (I'm not sure if this word exists, English isn't my first language) 3D gaming.

-Metal Gear Solid (PS, 1998): raised the bar for storytelling, voice acting and cinematics in video games.

I sort of took an oath with myself to not post in this thread anymore... but you know, this one got to me

saying that Marathon revolutonized the FPS genere is like saying that pong revolutionized the video game, so I don't think it counts...

but that's just me...

I'd forgotten Duke's "kick" button wasn't just a weapon mapping in the original game.

Still, reducing the weapon slots to 2 (plus dedicated melee and grenade controls) was highly influential given how it affected player strategy.

Oh, I wish... but alas I don't think Marathon influenced the industry at large, just with Bungie.

Oh, and of course SimCity was spectacularly influential in ushering in the "god game"/Sim genre.

Thief was a very ground breaking game in terms of first person shooters
Thank you! I was terrified that I'd get to the end of this thread and not see a single mention of the grand-daddy of stealth games. Thief showed us that you could make an interesting game without the ever-escalating armory of homing rocket grenade laser machine gun launchers. How many first-person games before Thief allowed you to win a level and proceed without laying a finger on a single enemy present?

And let's give Goldeneye 64 some love here. Not only did it redefine the console FPS scene, it also showed that movie-license-based games did not have to suck.

It's kinda interesting that it seems people are somewhat divided. One group mentions newer games like Halo, Bioshock and Gears and others mention Doom, Hal-Life, System Shock 2, Thief etc.

Is this a matter of age? Do we see the games we started out on as the top of the heap?
I, myself, is part of the "old games" group, but then, those are the games I grew up on, so I tend to see the newer games as standing on the backs of giants.

I would maybe add Myst (and sequels), if only for the complete breaking of norms regarding cinematic and space requirements. C&C also showed me the wonderful world of cinematics that was enabled by the cd-rom. Ahh, Sheppard (sp?) and Seth, how I miss them.

Damn, if I don't stop now I'll start weeping and thinking about Monkey Island 1-3. (4 never happened) Hell I learned German so I could play Monkey 1 on my Amiga 500. That game changed me, if nothing else. :)

Grand Theft Auto...

It inspired a whole genre of sanbox style games in which it's questionable if you actually play a hero. I'm not sure how many games prior to this got so much national attention ...whether it be Hot Coffee, or insinuating sex with prostitutes, melee bashing innocent city citizens, or glorifying car jacking.

It's the first video game I was aware of that got negative press on a national scale and helped prompt senate hearing and the ESRB system so much. Might sound passe in 2008....but when GTA I debuted...no one knew what to expect.
