Get Adblock! I joke, I joke! I kid, I kid!

The site's gotta make money so either put up with the ads or get Pub Club
But a GOOD company doesn't care about the money. I don't mind maybe a few banner ads. After all, without banner ads, I would have never discovered Rifftrax, but there is such a thing as going too far.
Oh this nonsense again? A company's sole purpose is to make money so if they don't care about that then they're a shitty company. This has been explained to you ad nauseum and you're still not getting it. And why should the site be run for you for free? They're not a charity.
In the case of the Escapist, while it is a business, they isn't exactly a money making machine. The Escapist wouldn't exist if the staff didn't care about what they were doing.

Your comment about the money is perfectly valid, as it isn't a non-profit, but there's this additional emotional incentive to let the Escapist have their ad revenue that I personally cant' ignore.
I know it was more of a general criticism to what he said

Ads are fine, but when i'm watching a string of vids in a row, i'd like to not have to find another way to preoccupy my time for thirty seconds in between each one.
1. Open several tabs with videos.
2. Mute the sound. Or take off your headphones if you have them (that's what I do).
3. Play all the videos. Protip - Ctrl+Tab cycles through the tabs, so you can just press that and keep your mouse over the play button. Ctrl+Shift+Tab cycles backwards, if you need that.
4. Go do something for a couple of minutes. I check the forums, or catch up on some news or go make myself a sandwich/food/cup of tea/cup of coffee. You can check your Facebook/Twitter/MySpace/Google+ if you have one and you care - I don't care for mine, otherwise I would have done it.
5. Come back and pause the videos that are running, if any. Usually whatever I do takes five minutes or more, anyway, so when I come back to the videos they've all finished playing.
6. Play the videos now.

I'm really diggin' the true Scotsman sarcasm there!

But yeah, they have to make money somehow, and I've seen far more obtrusive ads on sites I've frequented. The full border ads get me once in awhile, but better that than no more Escapist.

You're not a real man until you join the marines, reserve "God of War :We Want to Make Money", and buy the new Chevy Scion Accord.

Well bye then.

Did you make an account just to complain about this? Surely it would only affect you if you were an active poster?
That's just going out of your way to be offended.

...I really hope, that the Space Janitors-crew is paying big buck to the site, because I'm really gatting fed up with the over 30 second BS-commercials of their show... If you're gonna do a trailer/teaser, do it right, at least!

I understand the big E needs money to pay for their shows and server hosting and what not but they really could use less intrusive ads (I mean the capcha one, that's just fucking obnoxious and makes me not want to buy from the companies shown or post here) and their pub club is a bit overpriced. The 2 sites I host cost about that much to host, so yeah not terribly interested in that

There is a difference between making money off advertising and seizing every possible opportunity to push ads. And when it comes down to typing "I AGREE" after every post since I came back and waiting for the commercial to load because it also opened two more tabs for a video series I have no interest in watching, it makes me wonder if it is foolish to even post on a site that comes off so creepily evil. Now that I've finished re-watching Doraleous & Associates there's not much to keep me around, but I do miss the discussions in the forums.

So...if you want to escape from this website, I suppose that would make you the REAL escapist here!

I'm sorry.

OT: Yeah, it's been said a load of times really. Ads and publisher club memberships pay for the site and it's employees. Just think, every advert you sit through pays another portion of Yahtzee's salary.

You can also use Ctrl+PageUp and Ctrl+PageDown (only works in Firefox and Chrome).
True, but I don't like that, as I have to release the mouse either to use both hands or to use my right hand for the Right Ctrl and the Page buttons. Ctrl+Tab allows that total laziness when you just cycle through tabs and click the mouse with minimum amount of movement.

Do any of you post on other forums that require you to type ad slogans every so often in order to post?

Nope. Personally, I don't mind the captchas. They were annoying at one point when the pic didn't show and I was unable to post more than once per day but they're fine atm.

What really grinds my gears is that hellish 30sec Janitors video that I have to watch again and again and again. I get it, Escapist! I saw the pilot! I've seen this ad dozens of times! Please stop the assault on my eyes and ears!

PS: How is it fair to watch a 30sec ad followed by a 4min video?!

But it would take longer to open it than to type the answer. :O

I usually have word open all the time anyway since I check the escapist in my free time and while I'm writing. So if I know that I want to watch a lot of ZP, or post a lot, I can just pull up doc, and copy-paste like a champ

4chan. There is reCaptcha on every post.

Besides, here I've seen a total of 4 or 5 ads for the past two weeks or so. Not much more than two dozen in total. Three of them were in what you could call "rapid succession" almost one per day for 3 days, or maybe they were 3 in four days, this week.

Do you feel less bad now?

No, I was just curious. Just one other site that does this. I wonder how all those other free forums pay the bills without making posters type ad slogans.

They shove even more ads to your face, I presume. And I've seen forums with the extremely obnoxious in-text hyperlink looking ads (don't know the exact term for them). Hell, I'd fill in a CAPTCHA or even two or three if I that means I wouldn't have them here.

NeoGaf has 2 banner ads, one at the top and one at the bottom. Wonder how they keep the forums up!

My point is, THIS is overkill and I don't believe that "they need to make money" is an excuse for an "anything goes" type of approach.
