Personally I would want to see it, but it's hardly a big deal. If I get to see it on E3 or release it wont change my opinion a whole lot, but what we would get to see now would probably have been a prototype. Considering the console is supposed to be out this year I am sure the console will be shown at E3 or earlier than that.

I am curious, but I wont get mad or start whining about this.

I personally couldn't care less, but there's no denying that it's a bit weird.

They should have had a cardboard box up on the stage, which they then never open. Just to screw with people.

Considering this is the first thread that was made about that fact, written in all caps no less, I would go with you being the only one who really cares about it.

They probably only have the prototype so far, there have been a few pictures around the internet already:

That one looks a bit like a minimalistic Wii U.

OT: I personally wouldn't mind if the release turns out to be about the size of the PS3. I kinda like the appeal of having a miniaturized monolith in my house.

That gets me thinking: Sony, Make your next console the monolith with a disk slot.

Its design has already been finalised

Seriously though I personally couldnt care less I dont mind what it looks like I barely paid attention to anything they said it means almost nothing to me I will see what it delivers when it comes out, these conferences are just ways to build hype and I have had enough of that a long time ago I take nothing they say at face value same with any company.

I have yet to see a pc or console whos design was exciting its what it can do that people are interested in and I guess they covered that in theory but as they say between the theory and the fact is often a very large tract.

I agree with the folks over at the Escapist Podcast - the design is most likely finalized, but if they reveal everything right now and come to E3 empty-handed, it won't be pretty.

have any of the previous announced consoles been shown during their first announcement? I don't believe any of us had seen what a Wii U looked like untill nearly a year and a half later.
They did actually show pictures of the Wii U console at the E3 where it was first announced. It's just that they concentrated so much on the controller that most people completely overlooked it

OT:It was a conference to show off the new console so not actually showing it is a bit odd.I mean it's supposed to launch in around 10 months so you would imagine they would have the design finalised by now

Although I am dying to know what the system looks like, I also realize that they still need something to show in E3. However, looks also play a great deal on whether or not someone will purchase a product. Sounds stupid, yes, but it's a fact. Two cars could have the same functions, one even better, but many people are more likely to grab the worst of the two because it's more aesthetically pleasing. People are dying to know what this new system looks like and I'm sure many were expecting to see it during a presentation about the actual system.

Time to wait for E3. currently I am curious about the system, but there are no games at the moment I'm interested in purchasing with it.

am i the only one who doesn't give a damn? they did give us specs, a release date, the controller and a nice list of games, and people complain that they didnt get to see the case? thats all theyre complaining about when you get right down to it.

has anyone ever complained about box art not being shown at the announcement of a game? even that i could understand since box art is marketing material. but this is a bit silly if you ask me.
I don't see what the big deal is. It is basically just like a PC case (actually, the exact same). Gray box or awesome design with lights everywhere, it will still work the same.

Who cares? It's most likely gonna be a black box of some sort that says PS4 on it, so what's the big deal?

While its understandable that "not showing the console" is a bit annoying, this wasn't about showing the console. It was about bringing the PS4 into the light of both the community (us) and the news world (journalists). Even bad press, which seems to be happening a lot at the moment, is still press on the PS4, and keeping it in the public eye for as long as possible helps Sony simply from a "console war" perspective.

Microsoft looks to be slated for a April "reveal" of their own, and will pull a similar style of event. Why?? because there needs to be some big guns left to fire at E3, where all of the regular media will be and where they try and wow the user base (us).

What I DIDN'T like about the PS4 reveal was the retread the had on a lot of things like the Final fantasy announcement of an announcement, they Trailer they showed from 6-8 months ago, and Blizzard's Dialbo III. The last one is more of a personal reason, as I did not enjoy Diablo III, but we will see if they announce anything pertinant at Blizzcon, like the release of Titan on the PS3/4 or some such thing. Maybe (and we can all hope for this) a return of the Lost Vikings eh :D

There isn't a whole industry centred around making shiny boxes and wrappers for everything.

Your average "consumer" has about as much discernment as a stoned magpie.

I agree and I think that Sony makes a better aesthetically appealing series of devices. I went with that image to detail the technical trouble of cooling the thing off, which should extend product life. Essentially the device will be a computer like a HTPC but it still "should" retain a sense of identity as a performance console.

Brand identity is going to be troublesome when the device is already looking a lot like a "me too" thing.

It would be an interesting project to work on as an engineer or a design artist. You know where you are at, you know your financial limitations, and you know where you are going. Just a matter of getting it from A->B. Looking forward to what Sony comes up with, although ultimately I don't think I am going to buy it first year or so out.

There is already a lack of titles across the board (all systems), not really seeing a "pipeline" improvement, just more off the shelf technology tossed at a problem that does not (for me) address the real problem already "out there". Lack of product to sell with units.

1000 dollar Nvidia cards... and what game am I supposed to be playing with that? Your guess is as good as mine.

Like a beautiful car... and no roads to drive on or a super-sonic passenger jet in the middle of an energy debacle.

Thanks for the response, got me thinking!

My though is the same - they're not quite done the design yet. But honestly, does anyone really give a damn about what a home console looks like? We know it's probably going to be black, and box-like.

For the future, you may want to include even a TINY bit of background, because I have no idea what you guys are arguing about.

Are you arguing about the PS4 or next Xbox?

Didn't show it because there is nothing to show.

An AMD bulldozer or piledriver is going to be around 125 watts TDP, due to cost I don't expect a vishera in the box. Ultimately there is a thermal concern to manage. The other components are also going to be heat generators as well although scaleable. Going to be looking for some fans, fairly heavy heatsinks... hard to say if it will be custom or off the shelf components, probably looking for something in the way an external power supply with a rather large cord to separate the devices, it may have some sort of fan as well.

499.00 USD has been the buzz, but I think that is somewhat light. The OS will be kind of windows 8 kernel, which makes the wonder how Sony has worked around the patents of the Kinect device... maybe cut a deal for Xbox to run with a Blu-Ray device at close to cost in exchange for Kinect and the OS. Unified API's... ermm...

As far as the overall shape of the unit? the ductwork will dictate most of that, CAD and tunnel testing the airflow trying to mitigate the noise that the fan/fans are going to put out... probably going to have some throttling built in to control that as well.

Something like this depending if the thing has the PSU internal or external?

This post implies the next Xbox, while

implies the PS4.

This isn't just meant for the OP, but all future OPs: INCLUDE SOME DAMN BACKGROUND IN EVERYTHING. Assume your reader is an idiot or is generally uninformed. At least give them something that is easy to Google (if we're having an ongoing discussion ala the Mass Effect 3 ending controversy).

Well if you went to a car unveiling, and all they showed was a wheel and a few pieces of material that the seats would be made of, you would not be happy would you? After all, who cares what the car looks like......its how it drives and its speed thats important.

Worst thing, your complaining about people complaining about a console. Which is just as bad. lol. Why does it even effect you at all? I thought the whole PS4 event sucked, nothing wowed me, i expect the graphics to be good. Dont care about all that social/sharing rubbish. When it came to the games, which is the important part for me, just un interesting sequels, no game play, few tech demos that relate to nothing and Watchdogs (which while amazing) is on other systems. They dropped the ball on this event. Hopefully it was on purpose and they will knock the ball out the park at E3.
