Search bar approved, unless I screwed up again, which is likely. Go self confidence!

Well down in South East Asia there is a little island called Singapore. And on this island they have something called Electronic Road Pricing(ERP), which charges you $2 or more every time you drive through a gantry during rush hour (which translates to about half of the entire day).

Surely you can find a route to your destination without one? Not exactly, these gantries are EVERYWHERE. One is actually right smack on a street directly outside some poor chap's house, so he has to PAY the government to drive OUT of his house and again to drive back in.

Well recently the government has been talking about this, and apparantly they think this extortion isn't enough! They say that they're going to track every local car with GPS satellites and, I'm not making this up here, charge folks based on how far they drive. So essentially everyone's taking a taxi everywhere.

I have no idea if they truely mean to enforce this, or if this is some late april fools joke, or someone in the government made a really bad typo, or if someone's writing stories about photoshopped images again (and passing them off as the truth), or if this is some tax collector's published fanfiction. All I know is this is one of the dumbest things I've heard this year.

Anyway, what are some of the weirdest or stupidest things that someone (or someones) said they were going to do?

I love Singapore (my dad lives there most of the time), but I must admit they due have some strange extremes to try and keep everything looking nice and tidy.

I'll do another Singapore one. Chewing gum is illegal over there.

WHAT even gums illegal !?!?!?

We have a lot of excess charges in the UK already.
£8 Congestion charge in London.
Bridge tolls around the country.
Our road tax and vehicle insurance is amongst the highest in Europe.

I have actually heard what you posted mentioned as a possibility in the UK and USA (Although with the gas prices in the US it is still probably cheaper than what we already pay)
I don't think they could get away with it to be honest, it would cripple the haulage industry, once that stops so does the country.

Now say they did something actually beneficial to the motorist then that would be a change, fit the tracking system and charge the motorist road tax based on distance travelled in a year.

Bracket it, low users (mothers just doing school runs) would pay the lowest bracket, whereas high users would pay the highest bracket, (say the current cost of taxing a car)

It would never happen but one can dream.

Don't they take littering very seriously over there, too?

Some amount of lashes given by a bamboo stick, if I remember correctly.

So, how exactly is that bad? People using their cars to get everywhere will have to pay more, people walking or taking public transport will pay less... sounds actually really fair to me.

We here pay an annual fee for the use of highways plus a parking permit for some Viennese districts, regardless of how often you actually use them. I can use the highway once a year and still pay the same as the guy who drives to work 70kms a day, Singapore doesn't sound too bad.

Even wierdeder shit, (it is a word.. now) to be a busker, you have to apply to the government, before playing in front of a panel who judges you based on talent, song selection and how you interact with your audience.

Awesome! in the west we call that audition America's got talent. Nice to hear Singaporeans get their future street entertainers in the same way.

Yeah, some guy sprayed graffiti in a train station and got lashed with a bamboo stick and six months in prison.
He wont be doing that again in a hurry I'd imagine

isn't this just basically a toll system? We pay for our roads through taxes, but maybe they will instead pay with this system?

Dude Taxi's are so cheap in Singapore and its so damn small you dont even need to drive...

I would be more worried that the Goverment will know where you are at all times with the damn GPS .. there goes privacy no more parking your car outside Orchard towers (red light district)

lol

Whaaa...? And they are charging you? How exactly? Credit card or cash?
Credit card. Theres a little credit card machine mounted on the dashboard of all local cars. Pass through a gantry, it makes a small *beep*. If you don't have a card in the slot, or if you don't have enough money, you have to pay a fine.

whiteM1lk said:
do you have to even if you ride a bike?
You don't have to pay unless you have one of those credit card slots mentioned above. Unless they decide to stick one on bikes as well.

Ohhhhh no... there's still road tax, car tax, all the fun stuff. This is stacked additional cost.
