Well, I've played the Thief games before, and I loved them. I decided to bring them back and, surprise, the latest int eh succession of new computers I've brought into my home to do horrible experiments upon has Vista as an OS system, as well as all the modern tech that makes the game freeze up and shit itself before crashing to the desktop.

I've found some little patch that says it'll help the bloody thing run on modern hardware, but I can, for the life of me, figure out how to make this shit work. I need to find a certain file (DDRAW.dll) and then change it to DDFIX.dll. Sounds simple, yea? No, apparently. I've done harder things than this, but this fools me for some reason. Does anyone have an alternative method to find this thing, or a way to run Thief 2 on my computer?
Sorry it it's the wrong forum, as well. I saw 'Gaming' and figured why the hell not. Heh..

Do you have a multi-core processor? That will cause the older Thief games to crash. If that's the case, you need to do this:

Open the game (to the main menu, don't start a new game yet), alt-tab out and open the task manager, right-click thief.exe (or whatever the exe is named) and click set affinity. Uncheck one of the check boxes (shouldn't matter which).

Granted, that's how you do it on XP. Not sure about Vista, but I don't imagine it'd be much different. Hope that helps.

Here you are, how to get Thief 1 and 2 working on modern computers.

As mentioned above though, the main problem is multi-core processors. Disabling all but one will usually fix the crashing and freezing problems, although there are other issues as well such as the outdated video driver it uses for cinematics, a fix for which can be found on the website I linked to.

Good luck!

Hmmm....man I miss the thief games. Good old games doesn't have a working version of this do they? Better go check!

edit

They don't. :(

But they DO have the entire gabriel knight series for like 13 damn dollars. I've only ever played the first (amazing) game in the series so...yea...I bought em. I'll never get all these games finished.

Thanks, people. I beleive I can get it working now.
Also, as for a new thief-ish game, some modders and programmers got together and made an expansion, I believe, for it. Part of the reason I dusted off the old fella in the first place.

Yea..not sure if you've seen it, but there ya are.

Yup, I'd tried all the usual bits to make it work. Along with some unusual bits, but..this should do it.

EDIT: The set affinity fix didn't work. Says I need permission. Hm.
