And you're gonna luv this... Garrett might not even return. They are thinking on either replacing his character or replacing his traditional voice actor.
I don't think replaceing Garrett would be that bad, I mean they set that up in Deadly Shadows and really Garrett's story has been told. Looking at what they're doing to Deus Ex I'll admit I'm not hopeful but I'm going to wait and see.

Correction:
Splinter Cell (Besides Conviction) you're suppose to avoid enemies and merely knockout those who pose a problem.
Hitman, you avoid detection by taking a disguise (Usually by knocking someone out) [Only the targets are to be killed].
Thief, you avoid enemies with stealth and steal things.

So, all in all you are not to kill in the games. The only ones you're suppose to kill are bosses.

AM I a bad person gamer for not liking Thief?

I mean, I really, badly wanted to. I bought the first two but they just felt so terribly outdated :-/ I could never tell where I were or where I was supposed to go.

I bought the third one the Steam sale since it was supposedly different (and from an ere of PC gaming where the graphics are not as much in the way), but it just didn't click. It didn't feel like the engine was suited for stealth gameplay. I guess I'm spoiled with modern stealth games...

Or do I just need to warm up to the games?
Give it some time and try again when you feel like it. There have been several games I've loved but had an insane time trying to like them at the start. I'm speaking of mostly Metroid Prime and Deus Ex. It took me about 4 years to actually play MP, and once I finally got into it, it was hella fun. Deus Ex I've owned since it came with one of my old sound cards, and just this last week I finally beat the first level. Hell, I remember not being sold on Morrowind at first, but since I didn't have anything else better to do I stuck with it longer and it became my favorite game.

Thief is one of those games. It challenges you to play the game differently than you would expect and then rewards you for sticking with it. When I started playing Thief 1, I thought the game was quite hard because I couldn't survive long without more healing potions. Now that I know how the game is played, I don't even buy healing potions when I'm purchasing my equipment. If you don't like Thief, that's OK, but the way you posted, it sounds like you want to like it. If you want to like it, chances are you just need to learn a new playing style to sync up with the game. That's what kept me from Deus Ex all these years.

Now this financially troubled company 'announces' thief 4 is in production, or rather, it announced that like what, a year and a half ago, and there is absolutely no progress.
Two things, they are owned by Square so they aren't in any financial difficulty and so what if they announced a game and have done nowt with it to date? The same is true of hitman another Eidos game. I am sure if you look hard enough you can find some deep meaning conspiracy behind why they announced the game but have not shown any work to date but for the life of me I can't think how it benefits Eidos in any way to do that.

At the time Theif 3 was okay. But there were other games that already set the bar in that type of stealth, mostly Splinter Cell. It really actually felt more like a poor inpersonation of Splinter Cell to me
Uh no. Everything and I mean everything that Splinter Cell did the two Thief games, released before Splinter Cell ever appeared, had already done. Thief 3 was not an poor impersonation of Splinter Cell it was a console tarded sequel to two of the best stealth games to date and Splinter Cell was as good as Thief in every way (mostly because it copied it whole sale and stuck it in a modern era) except that Thief was genuinely tense game where as Splinter Cell was not.

Deadly Shadows wasn't that bad, it was just the fact that all the levels were virtually non-linear. Sure, you could break into the duke's room by either picking the lock, getting the key from him or climbing in through the side window, but when all three require you to start in the same corridor just outside his room, it renders it useless.

They might not even know they are making the game. They sure as hell have merchandise set up though, with black shirts and beanie's that generically display "Thief 4" on the front

Enh, from what I can tell form their page they've hired folks to work on it. So there's some sort of action going on just nothing that is terribly interesting to the public. They've got some big shoes to fill, large mythos to maybe work with, and lots of angry devoted fans so I don't blame them for taking their sweet time on figuring stuff out before making any announcements.

Also trolling their boards nagging them for some sort of feedback, I don't blame them for banning you. I'm not in the game industry but I do art and I can not stand it when folks hover over me demanding to see what I'm working on. I'll show my stuff when I'm good and ready to, and I can only assume that Eidos is the same way.

I just really hope they leave the game in The City. They can move up the time scale a little bit but making it completely modern just leaves me cold. I WOULD love to hear more from Garret but I do think that they wrapped up his story fairly well and don't need to bring him back.
