nope. you are not grumpy. that is indeed bad.
I do want to emphasize the article is extremely coy and elusive in many regards, so its entirely possible it's being deliberately misleading. I don't know. Until more details for the game emerge it's really hard to tell.

Like I mention above they state that they want to tone down magical and fantastical elements, and yet the very same article has Garrett stealing a mysterious medallion that glows with unknown runes, so obviously there is some magic involved.

Right now it's impossible to tell.

I saw them say this:

"- Team is trying to find a balance between making combat enjoyable and allowing players to enter combat if they want"

What... Combat is something you should want to avoid, a last resort. It shouldn't be a first resort. You aren't a thief if you just run and kill everyone, it makes you also a murderer...

Incidentally, here's another picture of Garrett's new appearance:

And for contrast sake, here's a picture of his original appearance:

I was wondering more about why in one image he is holding it left handed and in another right handed. Ambidextrous thief? Innocent fuck up? The fact he has a compound bow rather than his regular thief-bow makes me wonder if the archery mechanics will be derped, with a really shallow arc on each shot and little to no wobble (can't remember how easy it was to aim in Thief 3). You at least had to think about how much the arrows would drop, so taking out some of the difficulty might just be annoying.
Well, you can get ambidextrous compounds these days, so it's not that much of a stretch. My issue was more with... *makes silly turning noise* horizontal bow... -_- *derp*

The fact you could go around those levels so quickly may have something to do with the fact that you had all-powerful blink at your disposal.

I would certainly hope they don't fuck up that minigame by having it freeze time, like it did in Oblivion. It get's kind of more hectic to pick a lock when you hear a guard coming closer while you work those tumblers.
Well, even without Blink, I managed to sneak my way around the maps fairly quickly... bit too Bioware-ish in map size, to me.

As for the minigame, I think they'll freeze time considering how many tumblers there are, which is a pity because even with an easy lockpick, the tension of knowing enemies might come up on you at any moment will make it harder for you.

As long as they get the original VA for Garret, they gonna get my money no matter what happens.

PS. What does the above poster mean about no water or rope arrows? WTF? The Hammerites story has already been told, undead was also done. Magic don't care, it's simply something that exists in the world, not Garret's stock-in-trade.

I hope cinematic take-downs is a joke. It's not funny, but is so dreadful it alone could mean the wrong direction for such a vaunted series. If they turn this into Splinter Cell I'm gonna fly to Montreal for some "quiet words" with the developers...and their knees.

Dunno, to me they seemed pretty big. Might be that I just spend more of my time walking through them though.

Wasn't something similar done in the first Splinter Cell, and it was still in real time? It could be done, if it's intuitive enough, I think.

I'm kinda curious why is he wearing a man corset. I guess perhaps you'd call it a girdle? Also where are his pouches a thief needs to have pouches to ya know put the stuff he steals in. All I see is lots of leather straps, it looks like he's going to a BSDM shoot rather than going to steal shit.

Dammit that means I have 2 years to get the money to update my pc. I just hope they have the level of mod support that thief gold and thief 2 had.

although looking at the comments i'd say lethe style is gonna be a pain in thief 4.

At this point, we gamers should have learned that resurrecting an old beloved title, is never a good thing for its fans. Seriously every single reboot/revamp of an older title will piss off its fans because it is simply a new game made by a new team of developers. It will not feel like the old game you love, it can't really.

Best you can hope for is a solid game in its own right, and try to forget the title of it.

I can adjust and accept that once Keepers are gone, the power groups in City have changed and it became "City of Chains", whatever that means. I can accept that Hammerites never recovered after Karras' schism and Pagans weren't that well organized once Viktoria was gone to provide any significant resistance/influence to that change. I can even accept that that old master who was making rope arrows had died (it was my head!canon for "Thief 3" absence of rope arrows) and his apprentice makes things in a different way, so we have a grapple gun.

But why Garrett has to hide his face? He isn't a ninja, he is a thief! If no-kill, ghost approach was pretty much the canon, personality-wise, he doesn't even have to hide his face because nobody saw him and his most distinguished feature, the artificial eye still visible. It just doesn't make much sense :/

As for screenshots about the killing... "Thief 1" and "Thief 2" trailers had some killing in them as well, so I'm hoping it is a just a marketing ploy like it was, not a change of approach.

Uh oh. I better hurry and play the original Thief games so I can find out how they're gonna screw up the reboot.

....

I'm sorry, that was cynical. This game's definitely on my radar. Here's hoping it does its legacy proud.

But for real, I'm gonna go play Thief now.

Well, there was a lot of negativity surrounding Human Revolution before it leaked and people actually played it. I'm confident in Eidos Montreal and I'd reserve judgement until there's at least some footage.

What I hope for is complex level design, aware AI that keeps you on your toes constantly, varied difficulty levels that demand more and more of you as they're increased (even not to knock out anyone or be seen at all, steal everything and do special mission/level-specific things) and a tight stream of gold and supplies, so you have to make tough choices about your load-out and playstyle.

Dishonored had great art, setting, story, presentation, but it lacked elements like that and ultimately it was quite weak and forgettable as a stealth game. Thief 4 cannot be like it.

Well Garrett has always been a bit odd... just saying it wouldn't surprise me all that much if he was into that sorta stuff, strictly in private of course. I mean the closest thing he's had to a girlfriend in ages was technically a tree... And then there was the whole thing with his eye and her tying him up...

I'll take it for what it is, honestly, a reboot, and reboot's are made to appeal to a certain kind of audience. Even if they screw it up DmC style it still won't be franchise ruining for me, I don't think.

Can't say I'm not excited to play it and see what it's about, anyway.

It was about focusing on steath, because otherwise you'd be killed in a matter of seconds.
*sigh*...don't screw it up...whoever has it.
Oh, you could kill people alright. But you're a thief, not a murderer, so on the higher difficulties (the right difficulties) you instantly get a game over when you kill someone, even if accidentally.

Please don't screw it up, please don't screw it up, please don't screw it up...
Wait what?

Was this only in the first two games?

so is this a seaquel or a reboot?
It's actually hard to tell. They're calling it a 'reboot' but then Garrett looks like he has his mechanical eye from Thief 2, it also says he's 'returning after a long absence' so that could also explain why things in the City might be different from before.

Dunno, just going to have to wait for more information to be released.

In the Thief games turning up the difficulty not only made Garrett easier to kill, but also gave new objectives for every mission. For example on Normal difficulty your objectives might be 'Steal the ____ and 500 gold worth of loot', but on hard might be 'Steal ____, also ____, and 800 loot, can't kill innocents', and the highest difficulty was almost always 'Steal ____, also ____, 1000 loot, can't kill anyone at all'.

Of course the Thief community took it a step farther by adding the unofficial 'ghosting' difficulty where not only could you not kill, but you couldn't knock out anyone or even be seen.
