Tell me if I'm wrong, some of these things were probably started way before these, but here are some trends I'm starting to see in every single shooter of late.

1. Flmae throwers. Halo 3> Geras of War 2> CoD WaW> Brink?
2. Sticky grenades. Halo 3> CoD WaW> CoD MW2
3. Grenade launchers. CoD mw2> Halo Reach> Brink> Gears of War 3> Tansformers WFC

Feel free to add, I know some more I have just forgotten.

Grenade launchers go back at least a decade. Did Half-Life 2 launch before Halo 3? In that case you have your sticky grenades there.

There's been a Melee weapon in every shooter since Doom introduced the chainsaw, and Doom II let you start off with it if you were smart enough to back up first.

I don't know where you've been but or what the > are supposed to mean (trying to imply what came first?) but things like Flame Throwers and Grenade launches have been common things in games for quite a long time and they are actual weapon in the real world. It's like saying omg look all these videogames have guns, or knives or w/e other standard weapon.
The sticky grenade well that's an odd thing and I really don't know how to argue it.

Terribly bland main character, little to no feasible plot, an online community filled with either children, adolescent pricks, or downright trolls, piss-poor weapon handling, and a run-and-gun feel that's really getting on my nerves.

Last good FPS I played was S.T.A.L.K.E.R Shadow of Chernobyl (and the others in the series).

Why? Because it kicked my ass without being on the highest difficulty setting.

To be fair, Sticky grenades were in Halo 1 and that was 10 years ago. There were also sticky Grenades in Call of Duty 3 and 2 I believe.

Flame Throwers have been in different games before Halo and after Halo and there was a Grenade Launcher in COD4 and most Battlefield games to my knowledge and even Half-Life 2.

Grenades that double as proximity mines and two of the most generic gun types in history. Not to be rude but, you've only just noticed this? Grenade launchers and flamethrowers have been used in every major conflict the last 100 years. Games are based on history or future war.

Shooters are always going to be samey. Afterall, the only thing different in Brink is the S.M.A.R.T feature. The premise remains the same, point and shoot with as many different weapon types as possible.

P.S - God i'm looking forward to Brink and Gears 3 o_O

Haven't stick grenades been around since halo 1?

All of them being piss easy. I can beat most new console ports on the hardest difficulty on the first damned playthrough.

Agreed with all of the above.

By the way, is there any reason why FPSes are almost exclusively fuelled by pure testosterone? It's just a way of playing a game. I don't see why they should be so over-the-top butch most of the time. (I'm talking single-player, here. Multiplayer is... not the game's fault.)

Bah, I'm disappointed in all of you stereotyping FPSs.

OT: Explosives. Bonus points if they're plentiful.
In fairness it is all too easy to stereotype a genre where you could interchange any characters and it wouldn't make the slightest bit of difference. I honestly wouldn't know or care if Master Chief replaced Dom halfway through Gears 2

Shooters and FPS aren't the same thing. And frankly most new shooters don't really have a military asthetic. Cave's newest shooters, for instance, mostly have an animesque artstyle.
