There is a difference between New York the city and New York the state. This has more to do with international knowledge of New York as the state is usually portrayed as the well known city. I've had to explain to international friends where I lived (which is in upstate New York) and why I can't visit the empire state building every day XD. I've had to show them a map many times about where I was located and where the New York (as they knew it) was located.

Please tell me how it is not a cult? (sheer number of followers does not stop it being a cult)
yes it dose

Cult is a Sociology term to describe a religion within a certain set of criteria. In order to meet the criteria there is a minimum number of followers needed.

1.relatively good terms with the state and secular powers and may even attempt to influence government at times
2.maintain at least tolerant and usually fairly friendly relationships with other denominations in a context of religious pluralism
3.rely primarily on birth for membership increase, though it will also accept converts; some actively pursue evangelization
4.accept the principle of at least modestly changing doctrine and practice and tolerate some theological diversity and dispute
5.follow a fairly routinized ritual and worship service that explicitly discourages spontaneous emotional expression
6.train and employ professional clergy who must meet formal requirements for certification
accept less extensive involvement from members than do sects, but more involvement than churches
7.often draw disproportionately from the middle and upper classes of society

when it meets all those critea it stops being a cult and become a denomination
after a denomination if it meets another set of criteria it becomes a full church

1.claim universality, include all members of the society within their ranks, and have a strong tendency to equate "citizenship" with "membership"
2.exercise religious monopoly and try to eliminate religious competition
3.are very closely allied with the state and secular powers?frequently there is overlapping of responsibilities and much mutual reinforcement
4.are extensively organized as a hierarchical bureaucratic institution with a complex division of labor
5.employ professional, full-time clergy who possess the appropriate credentials of education and formal ordination
6.primarily gain new members through natural reproduction and the socialization of children into the ranks
7.allow for diversity by creating different groups within the church (e.g., orders of nuns or monks) rather than through the formation of new religions

This form of classification has sorta fallen out of style due to the stigmata with the word cult and dispute over when the change happens but the Catholic Church is no longer a cult.
Wow, it's obvious that you know much more than me on this topic, so I think I should retract all my previous statements really. I was working from a different definition of cult, but to be honest, it's become apparent that it wasn't a good enough definition. If I annoyed anyone by calling their religion cultish I apologise and will immediately withdraw from the discussion.

I hope not getting flamed by saying this but United States is not America. America is a continent which includes Canada, Mexico, Brasil, Chile, Argentina among other countries. Oh, yes and United States OF America. Stop calling a country like the continent already.

Also violence in videogames doesn't cause violence in real life. It's the otherway round. If we lived in the a totally pacific utopic world it is very likely that there would be no violence in videogames. So videogames don't turn people into psycho killers.

Intelligence is not the same as knowledge. Some people think they're intelligent because they're a walking Wikipedia, but things like adapting to the environment, creativity and abstraction skills are much more like intelligence.

North America and South America ARE the same continent! That's just a imaginary separation due to the fact that they're divided by Equator, but they're both parts of the one and only America.

Besides, I doubt anyone's looking for realism when they make anthro humans in games or on Deviantart. How are people supposed to fap to flat-chested reptile chicks?
I can guarantee there are people who find anatomically accurate anthro's more attractive than the ones with people bits on them.

I will not be the last damn person in this town full of teenagers who can't grasp this concept.
I like how you went on a grammatical tirade, then claimed that you were desperately trying to grasp the concept before everyone else did.

OT: Hm... I was the only person in a class of 30 that knew what an ICBM was. That was kinda depressing. Also had people look at me in disbelief when they saw me reading a book over 100 pages.
That segues into this: The "No Child Left Behind" program is doing more harm than good. The teachers are poorly payed(paid? dictionary.com is not very helpful on which one should be used here...), and its a lot easier to lower standards than it is to make kids want to know things. I had a class where we skipped about a third of the material because most of the class was too damn lazy to learn.
But mostly, the thing that I wish everyone knew: Those damn... things from Twilight are NOT vampires or werewolves.

(no offence taken)-It wasn't so much a bad detention as too basic of one.

also that was a basic soc coarse a bit of copy paste from Wikipedia

Its like taking For every action there is a equal and opposite reaction and applying it to peoples actions. There is a bit more to it to the point you end up using it wrong.

WWII didn't happen, it's just an urban legend.

We Swedes are very insulted when foreigners think of us as "Scandinavians". We're very different, we Scandinavian countries. (Please don't point out that we treat Baltic countries the exact same way.)

Europe is a continent not a country. And we don't speak French.
Yes yes gods YES.
Europe doesn't equal France, Italy, Germany and Spain. There's dozens of countries apart from them.

To people who order pizza for delivery at night: TURN ON YOUR PORCH LIGHT!!!
And to Americans (To all others, you can probably substitute the leader of your country): Obama cannot single handedly affect the gas prices! It's sad that I have to explain this to people...

I mean, WHAT THE FUCK? No seriously, WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS?
Some have never even heard of the Gallipolli landings!

Those were three of the biggest events in Australia in terms of the ANZACS, and they haven't heard of them! I mean we were getting bombed in WWII!

Gah! I hate what our society is turning into >.>
Do you by any chance go to HERP college? How can you live in one of the most WWI effected countries. Do they play CoD WoW and say "Gee, how did they get such a smart war story"?

The Bible doesn't mention baby Jesus being born in a atable [/i]once. It does mention the manger as bed-substitute, but that just means they couldn't find a proper baby bed (or whatever people used in those days). So the question of where they where isn't mentioned.

Chiropractor's are doctors and won't break your neck.
Uh, well, actually. Whether they're doctors is a matter of definition. Anyone can call himself a doctor, and any discipline can have a degree program that includes "doctor" in its title.

But there's a good reason why it's classified as Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM), which is that it doesn't stand up to the rigorous standard of evidence and clinical testing which mainstream medicine is required to meet. The governments and the medical associations in various nations aren't allowed to completely prevent you from consulting doctors who practice it, so they classify it as CAM, which is their way of saying "Do this at your own risk; it doesn't have the support of the medical establishment because it has not been able to demonstrate its effectiveness."

Chiropractic was founded by D.D. Palmer at the end of the 19th century based upon the idea that the human nervous system has an "innate intelligence" which allows the body to heal itself, and that misalignments of the vertebral column, termed "subluxations", interfere with the innate intelligence and result in all manner of illnesses, including things like high cholestrol, high blood pressure, heart problems, difficulty breathing, and so on. While not all chiropractors are quite as extreme about the ideas, "innate intelligence" and "subluxations" are fundamental ideas to the chiropractic system, and neither has any solid scientific evidence to support it.

So, yeah, if chiropractors are doctors to you and you trust their method of treatment, then fine, but the average person shouldn't make the mistake of thinking that they're just like any medical doctor out there. They have more in common with acupuncturists or homeopaths than with MD's.

Pi is 22 divided by 7, just in case you have a calculator without a Pi button and urgently have to calculate the circumference of a circle.
Ahem...
[HEADING=3]WRONG![/HEADING]
Pi is not a rational number, it never terminates and does not repeat. All rational numbers can be shown in the form x = a/b, Pi, not being rational, cannot be accurately represented by 22/7 as this totally goes against what Pi is, an irrational number.

You can say that Pi is approximately 22/7, although it is as easy to remember 3,14.

Sorry. That may have been a little harsh :p
I'm not sure if you think he was being serious or just listing something that the post was referring to.

OT:
1)You do not sound cool when you say "like" every other word and "you know?".
2)All of your problems will be fixed if you stop using internet explorer.
3)Do not act dumb to waste time in class. We all already know that you are an idiot.
4)Do not take offense to everything anyone says or does, like we were trying to offend you.
5)Do not sit around being angry and smoking pot during the "occupy" protests just because you are angry and homeless and have nothing to do (what happened in my city).
6)Please stop being angry at me when I play by the rules and you lose.
the list goes on...
