Token ethnic minority characters. More specifically, the apparent idea that there still only needs to be one for the cast to be considered "diverse."

It doesn't exactly make me foam at the mouth with rage but I find it rather annoying in games when a conversation ends with the NPC saying "Okay, I'll meet you there" then taking 2 or 3 paces off screen and completely vanishing once the conversation ends and then, x minutes later when you arrive, they're already standing there looking at you as if to say "what took you so bloody long?", to which I'd very much like to reply "Because I don't have a personal teleporter!!" whilst throttling them!

Also in games, with melee combat, why the bloody hell does my character recoil so much when his attacks get blocked? As if he's saying "Oh no, I'm so sorry I tried to cut your head off!"...fucking stupid!

You know that bit in a film/TV series when one character is holding another up at gunpoint but waits until just after they beam out/activate a forcefield or otherwise get to safety before shooting, then act all surprised that they didn't hit them? Well, all you had to do was pull that trigger sooner, you twat! Prime example: Star Wars episode 3, when Mace Windu is pointing his lightsabre at a beaten emperor Palpatines' throat but then waits for Anakin to arrive before lifting it up to slash down, getting his hand chopped off then being barbecued by Force Lightning in the process. A punishment well-deserved for such stupidity and to think, all he had to do was lunge forward slightly.

Oh, and why the hell do some games have asymmetrical armour?? Like a set of armour with only one shoulder pad...why? Is the other shoulder expendable?

I don't actually mind boundaries in certain videogames. Like in Bad Company, I don't really want to explore the entire map because the map is already massive.

Her shins are lower priority. Why would the babbling murderer go for her shins when they could just go for the ultra-sensitive giant mounds of flesh that are sticking right out of her?

Or her guts?

Or her head?

Just makes me mad. And no, Jim Sterling's idea is not the answer, it makes everything worse from a practical standpoint.

Games being six hours long and being sold for a full $60 price.

Games getting good reviews because they are part of a well known franchise (I see you hiding there Call of Duty. The last COD game that I actually liked was Call of Duty 3...for the original Xbox)

Games adding on multiplayer for no apparent reason. (Bioshock 2 and Mass Effect 3, WHY!) It wastes time and resources that could be used on the single player.

I hate that Metalocalypse is taking its sweet time coming back for season four.

I hate how people care so much about the lives of celebrities. I don't care if John Q. Handsome is boning his fourth wife or that Jane Doe had her tenth nip slip of the day.

- The "Hoo-Rah Marine core, fuck all the Russians (or )!" attitude thing. I had hoped we'd gotten over that whole immature "USA is awesome everyone else is a loser/our enemy" thing, but apparently I'm wrong.

- Bad QTE's. Good QTE's are fine, see Vanquish or Bayonetta. Whoever came up for the ones in Battlefield 3 and The Force Unleashed 2 needs to burn in hell, then be frozen and his entrails cut out, then re-burnt and left to rot in the middle of a desert.

...YES, that is EXACTLY what I want people to do! I said "what really gets you worked up over video games" not "compare and contrast opinions." What did you think I wanted? Debating over the internet is a sticky business because it practically always descends into flamewars and it usually gets off topic, and the point of threads is to STAY ON TOPIC!
As it happens, googling the definition of "forum" gets this as its first result: A meeting or medium where ideas and views on a particular issue can be exchanged.

It's the reason threads with "no discussion value" usually get locked or organically disappear pretty quickly. The point of this forum, and all forums (on the internet or real life) is ostensibly to get people having conversations and interacting with each other. And conversations, by their very nature, always meander through multiple topics - I think you're being a bit overzealous when you say they're "derailing the thread"; it would be a derail if the conversation evolved into a conversation about, say, the merits of the stories of certain books. As it is, they're discussing an issue one person "really just HATES", which is adhering to the topic.

And anyway, as much as I like to slag off this place, it generally is at least civil when it comes to discussion. It's shown no signs of devolving into a flamewar yet, give it a chance. Stopping all discussion, period, because you're afraid a flamewar might happen is like restricting the entire internet because you're afraid somebody might pirate somethi... never mind, better analogy: it's like banning all cars because you're afraid somebody might run somebody else over with one.

EDIT: Also, this post right here? Yeah, this is a derail. Oops. I think it would be a good idea to continue this convo via PM from now on.
"Sigh"

I guess you have a point, I'm just kinda paranoid about half of this thread being taken up by people bashing each other. The internet isn't always a friendly place.

? I don't really watch the Jimquisition. I was just taking a light stab at how, as you mention, the lower-priority shins and protected whereas her head and chest isn't. I remember a Rooster Teeth episode on impractical Soul Calibur costumes, I believe she was in it. The results? I don't want to spoilt it ;)

Unrealistic proportions on characters.

Male or female, both are equally irksome. Why did they go from realistic and cool-looking (RE4) to roided-out beefcake (RE5)?

Same applies for wanting all females to have Double G boobs or whatever, it's sick and breaks the immersion.

Actually, that's my main beef with anime as well. It's as if average-sized boobs aren't attractive or something to these developers/artists...Freaks.

*Edit* Dear god, I probably sound like I'm 12 years old. Nah, I'm just sick of developers making gamers out to be stereotypical nerds that love giant boobs and imagining themselves all as Arnold Schwarzenegger 2.0. I'd prefer normal human proportions, kthx, with exceptions for artistic expression (but not what we have now, which is extreme muscles/boobs solely for fan service).

Oh. I need to get my humor detector fix'd.

They chopped off her breasts, didn't they?

Also, the Jimquisition solution is, since these costumes are clearly meant to be sexually appealing, that we make all men's armor skimpy and thong-like. Which I suppose would be equalizing, but it also means that if they're attacked, THEY DIE.

The outfit doesn't hold up for very long.

Also:

I'd say they're equal, eh? Only one out of three has anything remotely practical.

EDIT: Oh, I should say something on topic, shouldn't I? Erm. . . when the player character is a god during gameplay but then a cut-scene comes up, rips control away, and turns the player character into a bumbling idiot. I could easily end some games about ten hours before their designated ending when the enemy predictably captures somebody and throws out monologue after monologue without even taking my pistol away.

That actually makes more sense than you might think. When you're armoring somebody who has a clearly asymmetrical fighting style, such as holding a shield in one hand and a sword in the other, you would want to armor each arm differently. the sword arm would get less armor so as not to impede motion, and the shield arm, ideally the one normally presented towards an opposing combatant, would be more heavily armored to absorb or deflect damage.

Granted, some depictions take it over the top. If you're wearing one shoulder pad and nothing else, you're stupid, not pragmatic.

Heh I need to get my grammar fix'd too, typed in the wrong tense of 'spoil.' Anyway, let's just say that the costume begins to show some features of the female anatomy in greater detail. It really makes you wonder if anyone and I mean anyone could do anything in those costumes.

That is an interesting take on equality. Bring them both down to low standards! Why can't be just bring them back up? Don't let one audience spoil the game for another is what I think.

What makes me homicidal in a game?

1. Racism in distant-future settings.

Okay, humanity has finally come together as a whole. Usually humanity is run by a single large government (Example: Mass Effect's Alliance) and they have finally looked past their racial and religious duifferences to come together as a species with the common goal of bettering the human race.

Except for those fucking Aliens who are obviously inferior to us even though they are smarter, more technologically advanced, and pretty much superior realistically on every level as a species. Fuck them, we should be total assholes to them because they're different.

Really? You expect me to believe humanity has finally managed to coexist with one another, only to turn around and have them be racist douchebags to the other races of extra-terrestrial life? How the hell?

2. Main Character Pulls a Jesus.

It feels like a cop-out whenever I have to kill my main character for "T3H GR8ER G00D!"
It isn't really unique anymore. I can already tell that's how Dead Space 3 will end; Isaac dying after finally wiping out the necromorph threat.

3. Main Character Helping Ungrateful Citizens.

I say screw the citizens of Randomopolis. They think I'm some sorty of terrorist because of some frame-job? Why in the hell would I want to help them? I'd rather watch them burn.

4. It was all a dream / Nobody will ever know what you did.

You beat the final boss. Save the world.

You either go back in time, or the public never knew of the danger they were in.

SCREW THAT SHIT I JUST SPENT LIKE TWO GODDAMN WEEKS PLAYING THIS GAME AND SAVING THIS UNIVERSE I WANT A MOTHAFUCKING PARADE IN MY HONOR!

I never fully realised this until I started playing Dark Souls, but one thing that pisses me off in RPG's is that I always want to wield a single longsword (or something similar) two-handed but "noooooooo!!" says the game, "If you prefer to work on your two-handed fighting style, then your sword must be BIGGER than you!". And so two-handed weapons are usually too stupidly big and slow for my liking and I can't just wield a single sword because the game only penalises me not not using a shield as well and so, more often than not, the only option I have left is dual-wielding! What I love about Dark Souls is that you can toggle between one and two-handed wielding of your equipped weapon, even the stupidly large ones albeit with a damage penalty and a slower swing.

Also, it's all the more glaring to have to watch a sword so mahoosive floating behind your back when not in use!
