The Bloop and The Slow Down noises.

Look them up on Wikipedia; they're very...interesting. And you can find a YouTube video for each of them if you want to listen to the respective sounds.

I call bullshit on the infinite monkey theory.

Random characters will continue being random, I could make a program right not that went on an infinite loop with random letters, (which is what I'd expect of infinite monkeys) I don't care how long it was left running, it would never, ever, produce a duplicate of any significant literary work, let alone all of them.
Well, yes they would. Infinity is infinite, it goes on forever. As long as the odds of random letters coalescing into literature was more than zero, at some point the literature would have to be written.

No, it wouldn't. That would only work if you excluded the possibility of repetition, in which case, over the course of infinity, every possible combination of words, letters, whatever, would take place.

But that isn't the case, with nothing stopping the same random crap from being generated over and over again, you're just going to get random crap, over and over again.
it says infinity. it would produce the said literature, because that's the whole point of odds. it's like saying you'll never win the lottery, but someone has to. and if you would infinitely play the lottery, there will come a day you will win, it doesn't even matter if someone else won twice.
Exactly. The whole point of this thing is the nature of infinity. I really don't understand why people are talking about monkey intelligence, hitting 1 key, paper, whether you could find the shakspear among the garbage - all of that is TOTALLY IRRELEVANT. Totally.

The point is since it's infinity, it's UNLIMITED, which means it just goes on and on and on - it could be trillions and trillions of years, trillions of decades, whatever - but since it goes on forever there's an infinite amount of time for it to happen. So given infinite time, they will type it because the scenario doesn't end and so there's always the chance.

Recently I was talking to a friend of mine and happened to get onto the subject of the 'infinite monkey' theory. The theory goes like this: If you had an infinite amount of mokneys and put them into a room with an infinite number of typewriters and gave them an infinite amount of time, they would eventually write everything in the universe that it is possible to write.

My friend could not get his head around this and spent the next 5 minutes repating the word "no" over and over again. His mind was officicialy blown! So I was wondering,I send out a message to Escapia, far and wide. What cant you get your head round?!
Yes and not only will these monkeys write everything, they would create everything and destory everything and have done eerything that is possible. That is the reason we thing time has a start and a finish, because if time didnt have a start or an end then everything that could of happened would have and that we wouldnt exist....

Perfectly said.

Case in point, another demonstration of infinity: the number pi.

It goes onto infinity and doesn't repeat it's-self. This means that you can theoretically get any sequence of numbers in it. Thus, if you were to enter, for example, your date of birth [http://www.angio.net/pi/piquery] into it, it will appear somewhere in it. Obviously the site provided is limited as it does not contain every digit in pi, but it still proves the point.

I can't get my head around the fact that Russell Brand attracts women.
This, also to further how dicks get women aswell.
Those kind of guys use a form of charm or something I think and they "play" women, unlike the genuine guys. For some reason I seem to attract the wrong type of guy. grr.
Makes me think I should start acting like a dick... but it's not in my nature, so this will never come to pass.

Transhuman theory.

In a nutshell: they invent a computer chip that is tiny and perfectly duplicates the function of a brain cell. You replace a few brain cells at a time in a person until there are no more biological components left. The theory goes that if done correctly, your consciousness will 'jump' to the machine components, complete with memory, personality, and all the other little things that make up who you are.

That's not the mindblowing part. The mindblowing part is that there are people out there that not only think this isn't creepy, but that it's a damn good idea.

The fact that God who created and continues to create the vastly huge universes out there cares about finite beings like you and me (who ignore Him most of the time and tend to make fun of Him or even shake our fist in anger at Him sometimes) is what really blows my mind. Trying to wrap you head around just about anything he made from the smallest atom to the biggest universe or anything in between is beyond our ability. All of the theories we come up with to try to explain them fall woefully short of being complete, let alone correct.

I shall be the end to the monkey debate/stalemate.

I'm pretty sure the monkeys wouldn't live for an infinite amount of time. I don't even think that the monkeys are smart enough to start typing on the type writers.

Moral of the story: You can give monkeys an infinite amount of time, but it doesn't mean they'll use it.

Did I win?

Why do you need an infinite amount of monkeys? Just one monkey, one typewriter and infinite amount of time should be enough, that's whats bothering me. /confused

I can't get my head around the fact that one of my freinds dry heaves when ever he either smells a bannana or hears the sound of soggy cereal hitting the rubbish bin.
It's crazy but interesting.

Eventually the monkey would die(unless it was an immortal monkey god!) and would have to be replaced, hence the need for an infinite number...I just looked back at this thread and I realised something. The Escapist just produced an Intelligent Flame War,I didnt think it was possible!
