There's something out there for all of us. Something that should push all of our buttons, that uses ideas and concepts that if we saw them anywhere else we'd tear them to shreds without a second thought. Yet for some reason when this one thing did it, we couldn't help but love it.

For me, I'd have to say it's Fist of the North Star. By all rights I really shouldn't like this anime. It's about a Bruce Lee clone who is so super strong that no one can defeat him, who goes around punching everyone with a mohawk because that automatically makes them evil, he forgives all of his villains who aren't ugly, and has a rather outdated mindset that comes with it being made in the 80s (Which I don't hold against it). But...there's just something that's so...sincere about it. Despite being one of the manliest men in all of anime, Ken was actually one of the first men to openly cry and have there be nothing wrong with it. When I was reading the manga, I actually stopped when he cried for the first time. It made sense that he had cried when he did and the emotion just felt...it felt real. And that's why this show just works for me. It's cheesey, beyond over the top, and it tries to convey emotions that I really shouldn't just swallow but somehow it is just delivering those emotions with such sincerity that I can't help but beleive them and be moved by them. It just...works. Plus, not gonna lie, it is fun to watch a show where a man can kick a tank to death.

So what about you? What should you hate but really love?

The Speed Racer movie probably should count. I think for all the problems with it, mostly that it is nothing but special effects and not much else, the characters come by so sincerely in their beliefs and emotions that are expressed, Pops Racer getting the silly one liners and Chim-Chim and Spritle being obnoxious as all get-out, I still get caught up in the movie. I criticize most movies that do what Speed Racer does, but I absolutely love it.

Also to highlight:
Brutal Legend - The game is really not very good, but I absolutely love it. From the humor to the story, it's just wonderful, and it's hard as balls, but I love it.
In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale - Uwe Boll's only 'good' movie (I like it like I like Jonah Hex, it's not good, but for a movie that's no better than any 80s fantasy movie, I give it a pass, it's fun)
Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge - The one reviled Elm Street movie besides 5. I actually like it. I like what it attempted to do, and though it fails, I enjoy it for trying to be different. The other Elm Street movies never follow suit, but that's why the rest of the series is liked more so than this one.
Aliens: Colonial Marines - I bought it for myself for Christmas, and I know it's a broken pile of crap, but I kind of like it. I don't play many FPS games, so perhaps my measure for a bad FPS game is lower than most, but I think its okay.

Probably Attila's music. All they sing about is smoking, drinking, partying, and getting laid. But it's just so fun to listen to.

Any top-40 or rap song with a well produced sound, and a monthly dose of Arbies/Subway. Just because I think a certain genre or item is partially responsible for the lack of free-thinking humans to talk to does not mean I can hate it all the time.

Baseball. Seriously, it's slow, low-action, hardly any contact, and so much downtime, unlike hockey. But hell, I always get sucked in watching it.

Transformers.

I should hate those movies. They have terrible writing and acting. The jokes are unfunny and the female leads exist to be eye candy. But I love those movies. The awesome action trumps all of the fault, at least for me.

There is nothing in those movies that cannot be explained or justified by a little imaginative interpretation.

Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace. Awesome effects, fantastic action, and honestly, not that bad a story.

People.

Especially the supposedly 'intelligent' ones that find pleasure in losing all self-awareness and shitting on others. I cannot abide the sheer self-importance, the pettiness, the pathetic tricks of language to build an edifice that I only want to spit on and tear down.

But they're alright really, mainly because only a fool throws stones in a glass house; but I don't really hate.

Insane characters. No not trevor, I'm talking Joker, Kefka, Jinx and the like. Using Jinx as the example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nlJuwO0GDs.

The character archtype (completely off the rocker) should be an easy to not like target for the "heroes", but something about these truly insane characters that do what they do because they're nuts earns my admiration. More so then most other character types.

To continue my thought, I think it kind of ties into the idea of villains being more interesting than the heroes. The Dark Knight movies for example had way better villains than their rendition of Batman.

Fanservice in otherwise flawless (or flawed gems), ergo Kill la Kill, Bloodrayne, Highschool of the Dead. I like me some cheesecake.

It's sexist, it's fanservice, and it in no way tries to hide any of it. Yet I love it to death! It might be the good old pre-digitized animation, or the great comical delivery of Mitsuo Iwata. But it somehow manages to present itself with a surprising amount of class, despite all toilet fetishizing and motorcycle dry humping.

I'm confused. What I like is what I like and what I hate is what I hate.

For instance, I like Fist of the North Star, which the OP seems to think that he should hate, even though he likes it. This duality confuses me, as the absolute truth is that the epic journey of the world's most dangerous man who can make people's heads explode appeals to him.

I do not understand the contradiction in terms, as it doesn't rate proper ambivalence. Saying you shouldn't like it...but you do...is just a case of feeling pressured by other people whose opinions do not hold the same impact as your own, not for personal enjoyment. It's the same case with me and the term "guilty pleasure". No, I don't feel bad about feeling good over something. It's just a fear of being judged, which one should not have.

No, no what I'm trying to say is that if these traits were in another show, I wouldn't like it because I normally don't like those traits. Fist of the North Star just makes them work

timber... kesha and pitbull

i'm starting to become obsessed with kesha...by god it isn't her music (except timber and your love is my drug)
i'm listening to Kenbo Slice's post while typing this and love the hell out of it :D it's awesome so you can see what music i usually like.
yet i get in a good mood if it's playing on the radio and it's just kinda bad... ffs the lyrics.

also i'm growing fond of... the ICP and i bought cd's and actually i'm starting to get really into them even though "rap" isn't my cup of tea but it's stupid fun to me. (yes i know what i just said about lyrics and then i start to like ICP but then again they do have some brilliant (offensive) lyrics that made go "haha...woha!")

maybe you could call this "so bad it's good"? like "this burger tastes so good but'll kill me" or just "i watched the room"

Though Jim Sterling may hate me for it, I'll have to say Dynasty Warriors: Next.

It shamelessly recycles and reuses assets, and it's repetetive mission structure is punctuated by a bunch of forced motion and touch minigames. Yet I've put in more time with that game than any other on the Vita by a landslide; something about mowing down a shitton of enemies just appeals to me in a way that I can't put down. I'm actually really excited about DW8 on Vita, LOL.

When I think of "So bad it's good" I think of something terrible that is just funny to watch. What I'm trying to say here is that a thing uses elements you don't normally like, but for some reason when this one thing did them, you actually ended up liking them. For example, you don't normally like romantic comedies, but then you saw one that did it really well. I don't normally like the Invincible Hero thing that Fist of the North Star has going on, but it's just so sincere and honest with what it's trying to do, I not only find it enjoyable, I find it to be really good.

i just thought it might be a diffrent angle for FalloutJack if he dislikes the whole thing about hating things you like or vice versa :)
but i think i do get your point.

Similar to OP, it'd have to be One Piece. I normally hate anime humour, the story's cliche as all hell, it's mostly predictable but for some reason I can't explain I love the characters, find it hysterical and can't get enough. Plus it really does an excellent job of setting up things to look forward to way ahead of time. Plenty of villians I want to see get pulverised and some more interesting characters I want to know more about.

Katawa Shoujo. It's a romance story (which is a genre I hate) about disabled people. You'd expect it to be this extremely creepy thing, especially considering it was made by 4chan people (no offense meant, but 4chan does have a certain reputation for that kind of thing), but it's actually extremely tastefully done, and one of the sole examples of romance that doesn't make me cringe. It's also one of very, very few pieces of media that made me cry.

The Madagascar movie tie-in game. It's a movie tie-in, it's a horrible PC port, and it controls pretty badly. Why then do I have so much damn fun with that thing? It's pretty damn insane.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It seems like the most cliche, trite and predictable thing, especially now that it's had its fair share of imitators. Why the hell did I enjoy it so goddamn much when I finally gave it a try, fully expecting to loathe it, last year? I honestly can't even say WHAT I like about it, but it's one of the most enjoyable experiences I've had in years.

DotA 2. There's two things that I hate in games: Isometric perspectives, which my brain refuses to work with, and excessive competitiveness. DotA 2 has both of those things, but being able to play with my friends without giving a damn about winning or loosing eliminates the second and it seems to be the sole game that the first doesn't freak out at.
