Not a great deal of hate for 40k, which I can understand. It's fairly amusing.
Hm... Iji, Discworld and Planescape: Torment (somewhat less so for that last one, apparently there are too many words for some people) all fit the bill.
I'm not sure about that. 40k gets plently of hate for being too GRIMDARK and over the top. If my name/avatar didn't point this out already, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Warhammer 40k with all my fanboy heart but I know there are plently of people who disagree, strongly.
Combat in Planescape was really, really bad and it starts very slowly. I can understand people not liking it. That being said It's in my top 5 best video games ever made. Chris Avellone is the greatest writer in video game history.
I thought it being grimdark and over the top was rather the point. I mean, the whole setting is practically a self-parody already.
And yeah, combat in Planescape was bad, but you often don't have to bother with it (except Curst, raaaaage) and there
are some incredibly flashy spells. Hardly perfect, but it's amazing all the same. It's when I see criticism about poor story that I get really confused. Again, the most common complaint has nothing to do with gameplay, oddly enough, and everything to do with "I hate words, give me less of them". I hear the phrase "if I wanted to read, I wouldn't be playing a game" thrown around an awful lot.
And Chris Avellone... no. I don't think so. Writer of the best story, certainly, but not best writer. He did Baldur's Gate, which I dislike, but can recognize as good, and also... a few other things. See, he's gone back and said that PS:T was very much a mistake on his part, and one he doesn't want to repeat, ever. He's happier with his work on, say, Icewind Dale. So apparently he can be a great writer but prefers being awful or something.
