I usually give a game a chance before giving up on it. It "dies" when its just too much..

When grindings is both boring and required to progress in a game. I can handle some grinding if its fun to do it.

When cutscenes show the character behaving in stupid ways, or when the game steal away my control to force me to watch something bad/obvious happen while i just stand there unable to do anything at all (otherwise i might be able to stop or avoid it.. but NOOooo, gotta watch your cutscenes/scripted events kid! Doesnt matter is it just broke the gameplay laws we just showed you previously, its plot! Who cares about consistency when you got plot?)

When the gameplay is too linear and/or repetitive.

When the choices i have access to are badly done and/or don't matter.
My main example: Power-wise, in Oblivion, magic is better than everything else put together. Mages can do everything a rogue and a warrior can, but even better, faster, cheaper... and i don't like playing mages at all.

edit- bloody screens!! So reel! I can't stand them. Its just so irritating to fight the game to be able to see anything at all.

I'm with the OP, I'm not a fan of RTS games, I don't have the patience for that. Especially when it's done badly or just a poor man's version, I'm looking at you Brutal Legend. Although I will sit through turn based games....odd.

Oh and escort missions, those suck and will never be fun. It's the main reason why I hated the second half of Silent Hill 4.

OH GOD. But those words are going to be on the Mass Effect 3 box...

NOOOOOOOOOOOO!
From what I've seen it looks like it's used strictly in conversations I honestly don't think anyone has to worry about it ruining Mass Effect 3.

On Topic: Lately shooters with "gritty realism" or that are called Call of Duty make me lose interest.

Some abbreviations:

"QTEs" (I'm sure glad I paid 60 bucks for Simon Says)
"MMO" (No, I don't want to grind my brains out. I just want to play a game.)
"EA" (Lets see if you can figure out why...)

In addition, FPSes are getting up there, but that's due to an extreme over-emphasis being placed on them these days.

Anything that's an RTS or a FPS. It's odd though, because I still enjoy Turn-based strategy and third person shooters.

multiplayer in a series that doesn't need it or that is better without it. Fine, multiplayer can be fun, but if it sacrifices the story for a game that is in a series that has been really big on story thus far just to be able to claim its like every other game. Especially for a game where the multiplayer lasts for about 2 weeks until nobody wants to touch it anymore, it makes a massive waste of effort that could have been spent on making the story better. If you dont get a game right after its released, chances are the multiplayer has already been abandoned (certain exceptions, obviously) so i see multiplayer, i (usually) dont get the game.

Well I have three things that kills my interest in a game: Online only, Console focus, and no dedicated servers (mostly for fps). Other then that there quiet a few things when combined can make me loose interest: streamlined, no mod tools, a rpg with out role playing, recharge able shield/health, chainmail bikni (or its modern equivalent, it usually means we rely on sex to sell the game not game-play) and cover base shooting games (where made focus is gun battle and not stealth focus).

Quest tracker in an RPG is probably one of the biggest turn offs.

Basically any kind of morale choice system comes second.

If the game has EA as a publisher, it's also a massive turn off.

Streamlining a classic and saying "true to the original but making it appeal to modern audience". That's always bullshit. Always.

And probably a bunch of others.

MMO.

Yup, that's it. I hate MMO's, and when people try to recommend that Borderlands become an MMO in my presence, hell is going to break loose.
Ahmen mate.

The second i'm reading about a game and i see "addictive multiplayer or massive community" I throw it away and set it on fire. Seeing as i play almost solely single player games the mere ideal of having to work/see/talk to others during my epic story pisses me off. I want to sit down and block out the world, not invite it in via my wifi. Seriously. if a game has tacked on multiplayer and the main focus was on the singleplayer. i'm a happy camper. however if there is a heavy multiplayer focus (call of duty, battlefield, tf2) i cannot get into it whats so ever.

When the primary selling point is the game's multiplayer.

I don't mind this in games like Brink or Quake, obviously, those are purely MP games, so they get a pass. I'm looking at you CoD, BF, Killzone, et al. Sell me on the single player, not the MP that I don't play.
And this just because quoting people with similar ideas is apparently the cats meow.

Turn based combat. Anyone here remember a game by the name of Lost Odyssey? I doubt you do. One of the most amazing trailers for a game I've ever seen, interesting premise. I eagerly bought up the 4 disc title, and as I preped for the supposedly astounding opening battle...

turn based combat. No quicker way to kill excitement and produce repetitive boring gameplay.

Story mode with an integrated co-op mode. So, Army of Two kind of thing. Or any other TPS/FPS where you have constant AI companions.

Heavy micromanagement. I'm not here to play 'Microsoft Excel 2011', dammit.

That and DLC.

Really...? I thought Lost Odyssey was one of the best games ever made...

Things that instantly kill your interest in a game
Let see there are several things...

1. Showing me some thing some player pulled off in said game that it was not you or someone you know pull off.

Example: Personally I don't care if some kid from the other side of the country can abuse Flaco's wave-dash, that still do not make me want to play Smash Bros. (Note: I did break down and get Smash Bros Brawl, but only after a smarter friend let me play the game on my own for a day).

2. Comparing a game to another game series I played when you, your self never played the game series in question.

Example: Buddy: "Oh my god you need to get Deus Ex Human Revolution".
The buddy never touched Deus ex machina and is incapable of properly pronouncing the game's name, but that can slide. Buddy: "you like it, it is just like Metal Gear Solid" I looked at him and said "Ever played Metal Gear"? Buddy: "Umm I don't remember playing Metal gear".

3. Spoiling one of the main characters big secret or giving away the plot on a story driven game.
If the Character's secret is obvious I can figure it out on my own thank you very much.

4. Let me play my games at my own pace. Getting me to hurry up playing a story or campaign mode will not want me to get any faster in playing the online multi-player.

5. Making the game's graphics the selling point. I do not care about graphics.
And please do not confuse graphics with visual ascetics. Good graphics do not make a game look good, good visual design makes a game look good.

6. Random dumb crap that pisses me off. EA Titles with there project $10 dollar, BS PC server nonsense and how in general how they think of their customer base. (Origin exclusiveness included), Halo titles (nuff said), The Xbox 360 Kinect. This Better With Kinect thing is bull shit, I already own 1 Wii, why do I need a second one.

It won't ruin the game.

But it will ruin the BOX.

When the blurb on the back of the box can be sumed up as "You have a lot of guns and kill a lot of people" which might sound like every fps ever, but what I mean is that the game is exclusivly about that.

Wait until you hear its a FPS.. Yeah, try and explore the maze NOW when you have to physically turn your camera every BLOODY second to see if its a dead end.

Mazes in my FPS, just FUCK NO, JUST GET THAT THE HELL AWAY FROM ME!

The word modern or realistic combat / world. Modern settings aren't bad, but when mixed with realistic combat, no fun to be had.

Nope, its a modern zombie game, looks like a rip of Left 4 Dead [setting: instead of cities, its a island.]. Its also a FPS.

OH AND MODERN WAR!
And anything that is console focused because then its going to be 100% dumbed down piece of my egg capples.

This isn't from reading a description but , a bad interface. If a game's interface has any flaws that I can't fix that I notice often I will not be interested in the game.

Also very good portion PS1 or N64 age 3D graphics . 2D graphics always look fine to me, be it pong, original mario, or any other game you can think of and so do 3D ones from this and the last console generation but dear god to games like FFVII and FFVIII and some non final fantasy games I can't remember turn me off immediately when they look so ugly. Which is weird since my first videogames were spyro games

Naw, man, I gotta disagree again. The setup and gameplay resembles the two recent Fallout releases far more than they resemble Left 4 Dead. Building weapons, scavenging ammunition, more focus on melee weapons than L4D - definitely Fallout with zombies.
