So tonight started out like many other evenings. I was playing a spot of Commander Keen 1 before bed, and just as I'm going through the level and jumping on yorps and shit, something stopped me dead in my tracks. If you're thinking it was a garg, you're wrong.

It was this!

This game was like literally the first game I ever played on a computer, when I was however old you are in 4th grade. I can read the Standard Galactic Alphabet as if it were my own handwriting, probably because that's just what happens when your mom only gets you like two shareware games for several of your formative years. But that one pickup item, the book, I could never figure out what was written on it. It would come to me in my dreams, always as a blur, and I swear I could almost make it out when I looked to the night sky.

But tonight the mystery was solved, and I'm super thrilled. I kinda don't want to say what it says, because I don't want to spoil it for anyone else. Or prove myself to be horribly wrong.

Anyway, did you ever have a similar moment in an old video game that took you years or decades to finally and suddenly realize? I guess the closest thing to that for me was that dumbass level in Sonic 3 Carnival Night Zone. Where you have to make the cylinder thing go up and down so you can sneak through. It took me like two years to figure out that you can control it with the up and down arrows, and when I did, I kinda just felt like a moron. Still, I don't think I'm the only one in that boat. So tell me your revelations with Mario tapes and such. Unless they're spoilers, then don't tell me that shit.

Haha Commander Keen, that brings back some childhood memories. It took me a good 10 years before I realised that it was faster to drift around corners in Mario Kart 64.

Holy crap! Marooned on Mars!
I totally need to bust out my hand derivation of the standard galactic alphabet. (mostly completed myself, before they gave us the full version in Keen3)

Oh, and Dopefish Lives. Still.

On Topic: For me, it's half the jokes in Ghostbusters. Every time I watched that as a kid, I only got about half the humor and it was still brilliant. But even today I'm still noticing things I hadn't noticed before each time I watch it..

pressing the z button in star wars episode 1 pod racers makes you drift and makes it infinitely easier to get around corners. had the game since i was born, only found that out a few months ago.

Oh hey, I can just fool that god-eating bastard, Trumpeter, with a weak demon. (Nocturne players all nod sagely now.)

Well, since we're on the topic of Commander Keen, I have no idea how many times I played that game before I figured out you can kill Vorticons with your blaster. I always thought they were invulnerable. But getting through under their crazy jumping antics made for a more intense experience anyway, so that was cool too.

Ah, the glorious days of shareware.

In Dragonball Z, anyone that is related to Frieza has a name relating to cold. Like King Cold, Cooler and Chilled. So humiliating when it hit me one day at work.

The fact that you can drop down on ledges in Skyward Sword. I kept trying to shimmy this ledge but Link kept jumping to his death so I gave up. Hanging from ledges didn't work like I expected it to. 2 hours later I looked it up and you CAN shimmy. But unlike every other game (OoT, MM, TP etc) you can't walk off and he'll auto-grab on. You need to stand at the ledge, wait, and then it'll say "drop down". was so annoying.

Took me waaaaay too long to realize Harley Quinn is named Harley Quinn because it sounds like "harlequin." The short lived paranoia of not recognizing a phonetic play on words name made me also realize the blind monk from league of legends "Lee Sin" has sort of the same thing going on with the word "listen."

It took me forever to realise the Ekans and Arbok thingy...
Like many other more or less hidden stuff in Pokemon, damn those basterds are sneaky!

That one's easy. From the point that I started watching the IT Crowd that Moss' Hair

is an actually an afro... With a sideparting.

Took me 2 years to figure that one out. I always just thought someone had nutted up cutting the poor guy's hair.

That was how you got past it? I only played the game on a gamecube version of sonic mega collection but could never get past that part! Time to replay it i guess. :p

Edit: Can you also tell me what the book says please? My OCD demands that i must know(pm me or something).

Knockturn Alley is 'nocturnally'.

I knew about Diagon Alley since I first read the word, but for some reason it never occurred to me that Knockturn Alley was the same convention.

What? What? Really?

And yeah, also need to know what that book says...but oh, that takes me back. Never played it except on God mode, of course.

Wait, you can't read the title on the book? Really? >.>

Now I'm doubting myself because it seems really easy to read.

I am not a million years old (yet!), so nothing took that long to realize.

That I'm not a million years old.
Also, that working hard leads to good results. Sounds simple, took me a while though :p

It looks like the name of a well known philosopher to me.

OT: While I am certain that there are many examples in my life of silly things like that, none are coming to mind.
