The perfect game for me: a mix of God of War and RE, both old and new.

Shit game: a mix of Condemned 2 and Ninja Gaiden.

Lack of story and action can kill anything, though.

A character I find unlikeable is generally enough to ruin a game for me. I don't care how much fun God of War is, the fact that Kratos is an A1 asshole is fucking annoying. He's not even really the likable kind of asshole you can play in, say, a game with a good/evil spectrum. Or, for example, Issun of Okami, who tends to be an unlikable prick most of the game, spending all of his time spouting the same predictable lines and wasting your time by asking you inane questions and pointing out something you've already realized. I can't really think of any other examples off hand, but the point is that if I don't like a character I'm less likely to like the game.
I realize I've used Issun and Kratos as my examples of unlikable characters on other threads of a similar nature.

Quicktime events, annoyingly voiced characters, uncontrollable camera, uninspired shoddy storytelling, artificially lengthened gameplay (Hey, wouldn't it be great if we made our players drive from point A to point B for 15 minutes of monotony, rather than just getting on with the game?) and horrible soundtracks to name a few.

When a game has a large variety of weapons but one of them is way more powerful than the others and ammo for it is easy to find so you end up using the same weapon through the entire game if you dont want to get destroyed and you never get to really appreaciate the other weapons

Games which think it's a good idea to plonk a sizeable cutscene (often without the option to skip the fucking thing) before a climactic boss battle late in the game. And force you back to a point before you got to said cutscene every time you die.

Especially when the boss is quite capable of slicing your character's limbs into bitesize chunks and force-feed them to you before your brain can tell your mouth and vocal cords to formulate the words "holy shitmonkeys".

Puzzle bosses in action-heavy games (like Painkiller), escort missions, sewer levels, overly-similar level designs, a poor balance of difficulty levels and bland, boring music. Any one of these can seriously decrease the enjoyment I get out of a game.

There are a few things that can kill a game for me. One would be when you have a simple direct plot, a single task which you need to accomplish (usually get to the main baddy and kill him, but could be finding treasure, weapons, or friends/family) and then suddenly you realise that your path to that is eternally blocked, so you spend almost the entire second half of the game generally doing random things for whoever you meet now that you have no purpose in life, and then all of a sudden in the last 10 minutes your path is unblocked you kill the final boss and are done. I don't like redirection. This also makes me mad when in a quest halfway through a game you have to go all the way back to the starting town to get something, which is even worse if you have to walk the whole way. Then there are RPG's where the starting attacks are so powerful that you never bother to level up because all the other attacks are crap. Other than that, Graphics. I don't care about graphics as long as hits register right, but so many people do (the retards who make up 90% of mainstream gamers) that when they aren't shown things realistically enough, they won't buy a game. because of this, other factors tend to become neglected.

Invisible walls that prevent from exploring the level generally drives me crazy. At least come up with a plausible excuse of why I can't go wherever you want me not to go.

If this isn't limited to single player games, lag always ruins games for me, and what ticks me off is i can't do anything about it at the moment. So i cope with it for now,but it really ruins the experience for me.

When they take a perfectly good game based on realism, or roughly on realism, then all of a sudden out comes some supernatural ancient demon cult hell bent on raping the universe very ungently and it's up to you to save them. I mean saving the world from the supernatural is cool and all, but I just hate it when all of a sudden it's the point of the game. So many games I happen to be enjoying do that.
i actually like it when that happens, it makes it feel like for a split second in this world "i" myself could gain supernatural abilities....before snapping out and realizing im sitting infront of my t.v. still in pyjamas *sad face*.

Having to go back to the menu screen to load a game instead of allowing it from the pause screen. Mercenaries 2 is a text book example of this which is funny since Mercs 1 did have a load feature onthe pause screen.

Not being able to go back to the last checkpoint so you have to start the level over again if you want to do something specific. I'm looking at you COD4 and WAW!

Having very long missions with no midlevel checkpoints. This is one of the reasons why I've yet to finish GTA IV. I mean even Mercs 2 gave checkpoints to missions! Also placing them very far between difficult fire fights like in the first Vegas game

Stupid cover systems. Gears was ok, but it seems like almost everyone seems to be going Kill.switch these days and its getting annoying. GTA IV again show up b/c the cover system in that barely makes sense and is just annoying.

I know that there are more but I don't remember them all. I'll think of them later. That's it for now.

Anytime you're forced to do stuff blatantly against the game's premise. "Company of Heroes" starts out as a decent, semi-realistic, Hollywood-WW2 RTW. Stays like that for a few missions, then suddenly you do a full blown tank rampage. I have to admit, my bias against tanks might be an issue here, but honestly, just gathering a force of tanks and plowing your way through the map is NOT good RTW.

"Assassin's Creed", where you're supposedly emulating a silent killer, invisible among the crowd, making a single, precise, deadly strike and vanishing again. Supposedly. Not only do you get secondary objectives consisting entirely of fighting large groups of guards in public, after the first few chapters the game just throws wave after wave of enemies at you.

OK, bit of a rant here.

Another thing that usually puts me off a game are characters that feel artificial. It might be that they are so underdeveloped they feel like paper cutouts, sometimes they might just be pulled straight from Uncanny Valley and strangely repulsive. Bethesda seems to be the master of that one.

Oh I like it too, when it's apparent from the beginning or if it' set in a fantasy/sci-fi setting. I just don't like it when it flips genres suddenly, like Indigo Prophecy one minute it's a crime thriller, the next your fighting ancient mayan demons and internet ghosts....

Sandbox to forced path (Crysis, you so disappointed me with the aliens)

Anything that is impossible to complete the first time. I don't mean difficult sections of game I mean quick time events or unseen obstacles that you have to find by dying first.

Super weapons... I really truly loved C&C Generals. I loved the units, the setup, the maps, the commander specialties, the factions, and even the campaign but I hated the super weapons. One exception is Supreme Commander: FA because you could defend against them. The only thing I hate about Forged Alliance is the experimental bomber...so cheap.
