Hiya escapists.

So, in a couple of weeks I'm going to New York with my family, and they're insisting that I come with suggestions for things to do while we're there.
Problem is, I don't know shit about New York. All I know is that I want to pop by an anime/manga store of some sort and buy some shit.

So I turn to you in my time of need.
Do you happen to know about fun/cool things to do or see in New York city, please help me out.

Get stabbed? Enjoy our plutocratic culture at Times Square? Cry at the false promise of liberty represented at the Statue of Liberty?

Idk I'm awfully pessimistic today.

The Met(ropolitan museum of something) is very awesome, it has every type of art and all sorts of archaeological stuff and the building itself is pretty cool. If you or your family are big on art, The Guggenheim is awesome for modern stuff, and MoMA is there (haven't been there so can't say).

The big tourist things to do are going up the Empire State building, Times Square, seeing a Broadway musical, all the super fancy, super expensive shops on 5th avenue, seeing ground zero, and going up the Statue of Liberty (although I think getting there/security is a hassle fyi).

Many of the best chefs have restaurants in NYC, so you could try to get into one of those, although many have crazy wait lists, so if you want to go, do some googling and make a reservation now.

Museum of Natural History is pretty good. The USS Intrepid. Empire State Building. Circle Line. Statue of Liberty.

I'm not a big fan of looking at art, but archeological stuff sounds interesting.
I should probably check out the museum of natural history.

Do you know if Guggenheim is anything like Tate modern? *shiver*

Naturally.
The thing is that my parents gave me a day where I could dictate what we should do. All the big obvious stuff are things we'll do on other days anyways. So I'm left to come up with something that interests me, and honestly, aside from anime and manga, there's not all that much that interests me.

Do you happen to know if they have any big "nerd-stores", i.e., places where I can find stuff like tabletop rpg paraphernalia and stuff?
[sub]I've already tried scouting for stores to fulfill my anime-needs. I landed at one called anime castle.[/sub]

We're planning to go to some nice restaurant too. My mother and sister keep fantasizing about all things luxury. It's slightly annoying since they want to sleep at expensive hotels and eat expensive food, while I just feel awkward in those kinds of environments.

Edit: Fifth ave. seems like it has only expensive clothes stores.
I hate shopping for clothes at regular prices. That place sounds like my own personal hell.
What would be nice though is if there were some shops that sold cool gadgets and stuff. Google should be able to help me with that though.

The Met(ropolital Museum of Art) is worth a visit if you're into art. If you're particularly into Medieval Art, check out The Cloisters, run by the same system in Tyrone Park. If you go to the Met, don't be fooled, you only have to pay a $1 donation to get in. They get funding from the state, so I don't think they're legally allowed to charge the posted $20 and it's instead a "suggested donation" that people think is a fee. I'd suggest planning on what you want to see. The building is ridiculously large, as is the collection; don't plan on seeing everything unless you want to spend more than four hours walking. The Egyptian exhibit is hard to miss.

The Met is also in Museum Alley, so plenty of stuff to do there. It's a walk across Central Park from the Natural History Museum.

You obviously have to try some authentic NYC pizza, so look up where you're going to get that. Also, take a peek at the Subway map so you're not blindsided when you get there.

Also also, expect daytime high temps to be about 30C. You have been warned.

You can take the train or a ferry up to Boston, an infinitely better city :p

OT: Maybe if you said what monuments and stuff you're already going then we could recommend some more. I mean, it sounds like you want some not-so-obvious stuff, not just Empire State, Ground Zero, or Statue of Liberty. I guess there's the Met, Times Square and Central Park although your probs already visiting those as well.

How funny, I'm doing the same thing in two weeks with some friends, and was going to make a thread just like this as it got closer. I shall be watching this thread closely.

If you like sushi, theres a buffet resturaunt named IchiYumi that's just amazing. The spread is hhhhhuuuuuuggggggeeeeeeeee. I loved it.

The central park Zoo is a nice distraction. Nothing amazing but they got a bird house where the birds just walk around the room with you.

Take a ferry to Boston? That's a 4 hour drive on a good day. What ferry would do that?

The Guggenheim is intensely modern. It's got some very cool stuff, but it's also got some very pretentious stuff. My personal favorite was a guy whose art was meant to create a new language where every word was a triangle or something. The rest is awesome, but even if you don't like modern art, at least get a look of the building. It's a neat building.

From what I've heard from a couple New Yorkers, because NYC retail space is so intensely costly, any really niche type of store (like anime or RPGs) really can't afford to be a megastore. I'm sure there are stores that specialize in those things, but I doubt you'll find anything along the lines of an anime Mecca. The closest I can get you is the Lego store.

5th Avenue is the most expensive part of an already expensive city, but the stores reflect that by going all out in their displays and stuff, so parts of it amuse me as a tourist sight, though I'd never consider actually buying things.

A lot of the top New York restaurants would be pretty stuffy, but if your family is adventurous, I've heard WD-50 (molecular gastronomy) or Momofuku (ramen/pork buns/other Asian street food type things) are more casual but still top-notch.

Go up the Empire State Building, preferably at night. The view is incredible.

Go hit up the museums. Natural History Museum is great.

Have a pretzel. No seriously they're awesome.

Plus, I really don't like fish, and I'd be awkward just eating the sushi pieces with no seafood.

The sushi pieces with no seafood? Isn't that none of it?

I'm the same anyways, when I go to a sushi place (with someone else, would never go on my own, I usually just or beef/pork/chicken teriyaki, it tends to be on the menu.

And thanks for the thread, I'm also going to NYC in a week or two and can use this ;)

I don't know exactly how many typical pieces of sushi there are that do not include seafood, but all something needs to do to be called 'sushi' is to be made with a special sort of rice that's treated with vinegar.

That's of course a must, but Games Workshop only carry their own miniatures from what I hear.
I'd really like some BaneLegions miniatures.

I would try the Complete Strategist. They don't have any listed on their web store, but they don't really list everything all the time and their store is PACKED with all kinds of stuff. Trust me, I've been there. The only brick and mortar store in the US that carries that stuff is in California as far as I can tell.
