I just noticed (literally, just before I made this thread) that Donkey Kong 2: Diddy's Kong Quest is meant to sound like Diddy's Conquest. I can't believe I didn't notice it before.

Is there anything in a game from your youth that you didn't notice back then, but realize now?

Obvious as it is, I will still say it;
You killed Garys rattata, you monster.
I still don't see why everyone thinks the PC killed him. I mean, certainly Gary got in more battles between the S.S. Anne and Lavender Town. Any one of those fights could have done it. Its not like he accuses you directly.

Been ages since I played Pokémon but I recall him mentioning something that he died after the fight with you.

That Pokémon encourages animal fighting, performance enhancing drugs, and child labor. At least they have free health care.

I didn't notice the graphics back then. I went back to playing the original Super Smash Bros a few weeks ago, and I was a little shocked. Still loved playing it though, so no worries.

Actually, he never even mentions that anyone or anything has died. You just see him standing by a gravestone, where he asks the PC if they've ever lost someone important to them. Then he walks away. Later on, the Rattatta is missing from his line up.

Someone made a creepypasta image deconstructing that scene and implying that the Rattatta was dead and that the PC had killed it. Of course, this being a kids game where Pokemon never die in battle, absolutely no evidence is given towards this conclusion. There are other, more plausible explanations. Maybe Gary decided to bench it, or let it go because Rattatta sucks? Maybe someone else killed it? Maybe he got hungry and ate the damn thing. Its just fanwank. Interesting, well thought out fanwank. But still just fanwank.

That some of the Pokemons names are just animal names backwards. Like Ekans is snake, Abrok is kobra, and Muk is... nevermind you get the idea.

Actually in the Pokemon manga I think they actually do make it quite clear that you (or Red in the comic) does actually kill it, or his Pokemon rather. Not seen it myself though, but I've read about it.

I'll edit this later when I can think of something to say that's on topic.

My friend's sister who graduated university and speaks four languages only realized last year that the burgerking trademark looks like a burger.

Or he could have, you know, traded it for one of his new pokemon.

Having read the Pokemon Special manga up to D/P/Plt (the closest thing to pokemon manga canon), I can safely say that that does not happen.

The whole "you killed Blue's raticate" thing comes from
a. He's at Lavendar Tower being all "deathy".
b. He had a raticate before and he doesn't now.

From a gameplay standpoint, it's obvious why the raticate is gone. Blue is meant to be your rival, thus the toughest trainer you're gonna battle, and for him to have such a low tier pokemon wouldn't really help with that.

Now whether you killed his raticate, or something else killed his raticate, or he just stuffed it's stupid face into a PC, is up to personal interpretation.

If anything the comic and game are two separate continuities. Especially pokemon Yellow. They're actually probably closer to the cartoons, cause the manga can get very dark or graphic (for a manga in its age group).

OT:

Staying in this vein, looking back now, the first gen pokemon looked terrible design wise. A good percent of them were either unimaginatively made or looked like they had some kinda mental/physical deficiency.
