After watching My Neighbor Totoro again recently I started thinking what kind of person it would take to openly hate that film. I honestly can't imagine anyone who'd ever display an open disgust or outright loathing towards it. Everything about it is so overbearingly happy, welcoming and wholesome I'd be amazed to find anyone who could provide good reason to really hate it. I can see why it wouldn't appeal to people or some would see it as childish or boring, but I can't imagine anyone really, truly hating it.

What things do you think of like this? And by hate I really mean hate in the real world sense, not in the Internet "stop hatin'" sense.

As much as I'd like to list off all my favorite things I've met at least one person who hates all of them, so... Something more mundane probably... Umm... Toilet paper ain't nobody out there who doesn't appreciate toilet paper!

Can you imagine still using corn husks? *shudders*

Grass. All those fascinating things that walk, crawl, slither or waddle over and under it, all the multitudinous stalks, weeds, flowers and trees, what's not to like? There's something for everyone. Grass is art, as I told the police after they came to my house to try and confiscate the square patches of neighbouring lawns that I had framed and nailed to the walls of my living room.

I'd agree with you, but they now have oxygen bars popping up everywhere...

You fucking stole my answer!

But yes, everything about this movie makes you feel wonderful in the most unforced and calming way imaginable. Anyone who hates it has no soul, or has serious issues regarding rabbit-bears or catbusses. Maybe PETA. "The Catbus is a slave. The Catbus is a commodity."

There are people allergic to grass. I'm sure they aren't too fond of it.
I think they're more likely to hate the allergy rather than all grass on Earth. Otherwise, they're just making it harder for themselves! Anyway, there are treatments of varying levels of effectiveness. They can still enjoy grass, it's just the allergies that get in the way.

Baby animals.

Picture this: A room full of some of the most adorable young animals, sectioned to prevent trouble but otherwise full of the critters.

Kittens
Baby lions
Baby tigers
Baby leopards
Husky pups
Collie pups
Labrador pups
Wolf pups
Baby crocodiles
Baby sloths
Baby bunnies
Baby ferrets

Even the people with allergies are going "Awwww..." at this point, 'cause it's just too adorable.

The sound of a baby kitten mewing. Not frantic mewing because that's either sad or annoying, but just a mew or two like you find in any quality YouTube video. How can anyone NOT love the sound and sight of a mewing kitten?

If you have renal failure and need to go to the hospital regularly to get dialysis, it's not stupid to hate dialysis, it just means you hate it slightly less than you hate dying.

It would be silly to hate oxygen, but the reason you've given is not a valid one.

The novel Woman on the Other Shore av Mitsuyo Kakuta. I found it very good indeed, but while I understand that it might not be everybody's cup of oolong, but I can't imagine anyone hating it.

Nothing is immune to hate. There is nothing so innocuous that somebody, somewhere, doesn't devote way too much of their energy to an irrational dislike of it.

I am full of resentment and seething anger towards the world because my life is shit and I feel utterly powerless in general.
As a result, I don't much care for "nice" or "cute" and the idea of "wholesome" automatically make me extremely angry because I can only think of "Western" society's oppression of marginalized groups (homosexuals or people of different cultures or color) when the word comes up.
Same for romance. All I know of love is to hate other people for being lucky enough to experience it.

See, the great things you love are quite easily hated by others.
I know well enough that the horrid, brutal and relentlessly unforgiving media / themes in media I am so enamored with disgust most people. I'm not even talking about violence (or at least physical violence), but I am drawn to depictions of mental anguish and existential dread because that is what I can sympathize with, I guess. So I like shit like Roadside Picnic, or Blood Meridian (okay, "like" may not be the right word in that case) or No Country for Old Men (not because of the cattle gun, because of Tom Bell and his little dream). Or Death is my Trade. Or Malevil. Or L'Isle. Fucked-up, disconcerting, uncomfortable things.
It's all just a matter of what preferences you have, really. But nothing is "sacred" or off limits, especially when it comes to hatred.

Mashed potatoes. Quite possibly the best food ever.

I found out my friend doesn't like them the other day and I'm seriously considering not speaking to him again. How can you not like 'em?
