So i've been playing through Chrono Trigger via emulators.
I will admit that it is good even if it is an RPG however there is one thing about RPG's I hate the most which has caused me to have some dislike with this game.
Turn-Based Combat. It's so stupid and pointless. You can end up shooting a giant beam of death at a monster the size of a city yet miss your shot. You can have a monster shooting a rocket at your face yet you are unable to merely step to the side and dodge it or another thing is charging up it's testicle-removing neck snapper attack yet you cannot simply attack him while it's charging up and so you must stand there doing nothing and then taking the blast to the face.
I know there are some RPG's that don't have TBC like Fallout 3, The Elder Scrolls series and Borderlands (if that counts as an RPG) but still it does cause me to rage.

And it is with this aggrivation that I ask to my fellow Escapists.
"What is it you hate about your least favourite genre?"

Casual games...

I hate that they cost as much as real games (Warioware for example), even though they're the most simple games around. They can be coded on a flash engine. You can find substitutes for these kinds of games on a browser.
Major rip off, yet idiots fall for it.

Dumb consumers ruin the industry by buying into crap. (Insert Modern Warfare 2 rant here also)

FPS (First Person Shooter)

Characters a lot of the time aren't very interesting and usually annoying.

I can't really pin down any real flaw with any of the games I didn't like: generally I didn't play long enough to notice anything in particular that made me dislike it.

However, I'm afraid that I'm going to be defending TBC on the principle that, at the time, it was the most common and (at least I think it was) easiest to make, style of RPG (I can't name any detractors, but I'm sure they are out there.) I think it was alot easier for the hardware to... uh, "count" the gameplay via turns outside of the good ol' overworld, and recognize input from that. Other than that, I'm far too uneducated in the mechanics behind games to say anything.

My least favourite genre though, would probably be "twitch" games (any game that requires you to ABSOLUTELY spot-on in what you do, no matter what). In my mind, that includes most (NOT all) modern FPS:s, and the Starcraft-styled RTS:s.

I am a slower, more cautious player, which doesn't leave much room for "twitch" actions that seem to be norm in most games out there. In a sense, beat-'em up games fall under the same category- I prefer games where I need to be largely accurate, but won't be punished too harshly if I make a mistake.

Sports games... I just don't get them... if you like the sport so much, go play it on a football pitch of basketball court. If you don't like them... why do you have the videogame of them?

Well, my least favorite genre is Sports... but I don't really hate anything about it. I just find it uninteresting. I think hate would come from frustration rooted in a lack of understanding.

Not my least favorite genre. But I am irrationally bothered by not being able to see your feet when you look down in most FPS games.

Turn-Based Combat.
Chrono's TBC is as non turn based as they could at the time. By the end of all my runs I had Chrono maxed on speed and hasted during the final boss fight. He would attack 3 or 4 times between its swings.

But the thing I hate the most about JRPGs are the forced story. I can find more imaginative scribblings of plot inside a Bazooka Joe gum wrapper.

^^ this is one of the two game types i hate and you pointed out exactly why thank you:)
my other hated genre are the "games" (and i use that word losely) that dont have any real gameplay and tend to be one giant cutsceen. (im looking at you heavy rain!) If i wanted to see a movie id go buy one for half the cost of the game if that!

Yeah, I could list loads of flaws, but really, doing the same tedious thing over an over isn't my idea of fun. I play games to avoid that kind of crap!

the same can be said of most video games genres. to be a COMPLETE cornball, they're ESCAPIST. if you like arkham asylum, go be a vigilante. go stop crime. if you like GTA IV, move to the crap part of town and become a petty criminal. why are sports games and guitar hero always singled out as being the "why don't you just go do this in real life" games?

Because both of those things are dangerous and illegal...? Whereas playing football or learning to play the guitar aren't...?
Duh...

I second this. Boast realism all you want but if I can't see my feet then it just ain't doing it for me.
And for the actual question... I'd say in the majority of JRPG's not only is it turn based but they also seem to scream in your face something along the lines of "THIS CHARACTER IS DISTRESSED. CARE ABOUT HIM/HER" without giving any real reason to give a crap about them. I mean, c'mon who cares what happens to Tidus, he's an annoying prick with an even more annoying voice.

Same here. Its why i really dislike MMOs (plus their psychological tricks to keeps players in, and the $$ associated with it)
