Sorry to say, but nothing really. That isn't to say they aren't without educational value, just that I don't think I've learned from any of them.

A learned a lot of sciencey stuff from Mass Effect, generally involving quantum physics so maybe not what I would have learned at school but it still taught me stuff.

And sure, as for when I was a young 'un I'll for reading too, several games there, one of which being Pokemon, which also taught me that shorts are comfortable and easy to wear.

Words like Agility, Paralyze, Toxic, Poison etc from Pokemon. Great way to learn random words.

how to read and write in English, seriously. I was like 8 years old and I got Final Fantasy 4 as a birthday present and couldn't understand a word of it (my native language is spanish), since I was stubborn as hell I decided I would learn English and sat religiously with the game and a dictionary every day and actually taught myself English trough the game. by the time I finished it, I knew how to translate and more importantly how to think in a foreign language.

Physics from Half-Life (or rather the Orange Box as a whole), Objectivism from BioShock (which led to me willingly reading The Fountainhead [learn from my mistakes kids]), the science of Dark Energy and a deeper sense of morality from Mass Effect, a desire to write stories from the Perfect Dark series (mainly Perfect Dark Zero), and a deeper sense of honor from the Call of Duty games.

Alpha Centauri taught me so much... got me interested in quantum theory, sociology, psychology, and, of course, space exploration. I'm amazed at how far that game got me through school.

I'm not even joking when I say GTA:SA helped me learn to drive. It really helps you to understand the mechanics when it comes to driving in reverse (IE how the vehicle turns when you turn the steering wheel while in reverse) 3-point turns were completely natural to do when I first started driving

ridiculous amounts of math and vocabulary from video games.

economy/history from simulators and games like roller coaster tycoon and civilization

and all games combined, they have taught me to account for everything, try and constantly think about "what if this happened.."

I had a lot of interest in history as a kid, but it wasn't until games like Rome: Total War (+mods) and Men of War that I really started to understand it better. The weapons, tactics, technology, events, people, and society. Granted, these games aren't nearly detailed or complex as the actual history, but it's a pretty good starting point.

I learned pretty much all I know about the geographical locations of countries and cities from the Total War games.

Rome Total War taught me a shit ton about, well, the ancient Romans.

Granted not everything in the game was historically accurate, but it gave me a basis in something I had little in before.

I don't get that, how does one learn morality?

Anyways, Call of Duty 1 got me interested in the Second World War which got me into history, Deus Ex taught me about weird-ass conspiracy theories which kinda helped with more...creative aspects, and with math, like calculating how much stuff you'll need to do something, so its something like 'If I use 3 sniper rifle rounds to kill these guards and use such amount of 10mm and 5.56mm ammo I'll be left with X amount of things to shred the remaining MJ12 troops to kill my way to such and such place.'

...which is kinda horrible...meh...

Well you know, 'learn' as in- be introduced & prompted into moral choices in their games which on a normal scale in life one wouldn't often think about.

History.

I have Civilization and its Civilopedia to thank for that.
Same here.

Also, Bioshock lead me to read Ayn Rand. So I learned about Objectivism and read a classic novel.

EDIT: Left 4 Dead taught me how to pronounce "Ayn Rand." It's pronounced "Ine Rand", by the way. Like "Mine", without the M.

I learned quite a bit about mythology from, well Age of Mythology, and I learned what an 'autoclave' is from TF2 (By the way, it's a device that sterilizes medical equipment with very high heat).
