The Nintendo 64 taught me how to tell my right from my left without having to do the stupid trick where you make an L with your fingers. Yep, I was still pulling that in sixth grade, until I realized that the "R" button was on the right and the "L" button was on the left, and it's been smooth sailing ever since.

From SimCity: don't borrow money! Your city will turn into a ghost town of decaying gray buildings whilst the interest rate crushes your hopes and dreams.

I learned that you can kill someone with multiple shots to the leg...

I can't imagine how I'd learn THAT in school!

...

...well, actually I can, but I'd rather not...

Morality from BioWare games.
I don't get that, how does one learn morality?
Well you know, 'learn' as in- be introduced & prompted into moral choices in their games which on a normal scale in life one wouldn't often think about.
Still the choices of reality are infinitely more important than those of a video game.

Obviously, never said they weren't. I'm just saying that being 'forced' into these situations in a game can really open your mind, or make you think about situations you wouldn't usually.

That's kind of an odd question, do you think morality is a hereditary trait passed on from parents to child? It's a learned thing, not necessarily so directly as being taught and explained, but something that is carved into you as you grow up.

That said, you learned morality from BioWare games? Really? I can only imagine you as one of two types of people then...

Oh, okay, maybe I was being overly particular on the words then, you meant it can't really be taught, but it is learned, got it.

Battlefield 1942 taught me the names of all the major battles in World War II and their settings and armies involved. Games like Rise of Nations and Civilization taught me about certain countries.

I learned a whole lot of history.

I also learned something I didn't in school: geography.

I learned basic math mechanics from shooters, ex. "This gun holds 10 bullets! I need to load in 7 to fill it up!"

History and geography from the Total War games. I would have no idea where Tunisia or Venice or many European/North African/Middle-Eastern countries were If I hadn't played Medieval II: Total War.

Also, Bioshock lead me to read Ayn Rand. So I learned about Objectivism and read a classic novel.
Same with me, though I found Rand's philosophy to be a lot less agreeable than I imagined it would be. The majority of people I've known don't care for Ayn Rand, still I think it's good to learn about all types of philosophies and draw your own conclusions about their worth from each, Objectivism is no exception.

Nope. What I learned from videogames would never be taught in school. Well... college I guess, but highschool and below were only the smallest smidgens of historical information.

I learnt that a shotgun to the chest is not as effective as a pistol to the face, and when in doubt use throwing knives.

Pokemon taught me a bit of reading as well as strategy and how patience (training and leveling) helps a lot in the long run.

Mass Effect 2 taught me Newton's Law.

Lemmings taught me to be resourceful.

And these and a lot more helped with more maths and english skills.

I learned that Canada actually fought in WWII from CoD3. You would think that my school would mention that since I'm about an hour from the Canadian border. In fact, if I only knew what was taught in school, I probably wouldn't even know what Canada is.
