Things you liked about games you didn't

So, we've all played games we didn't particularly care for. Maybe it was annoying gameplay mechanics, a lack of polish, or an atrocious story, any number of factors can go into making a game suck.

But sometimes it's not all bad. A silver lining, as it were. Oh, you still don't like the game, but there's at least ONE thing in there that you genuinely like, perhaps even enough to finish the game, even though you don't like the it.

For me:

Brutal Legend's premise. Brutal Legend started off strong with a fun little hack-and-slash game, but quickly turned into the most restrictive and annoying RTS games I've ever played. But the premise itself, of being trapped in a heavy metal-inspired fantasy world resonated with me. The comedy aspect could have also been great... if it had managed to stay funny for longer than 30 minutes.

Dragon Age: Origin's conversation/choice system, and interactions with party members. Personally, I found Dragon Age a bit lacking in several areas, but one thing I really like was the conversation system. This game had more actual ROLE PLAYING than any RPG I've played in some time. Also, while the story was shallow (in my opinion), I found the interactions with my party members genuinely good. Zevran really endeared himself to me before the end of the game.

What about you guys?

I absolutely, and I mean absolutely, loath Black Ops's multiplayer. But, the single player was alright. Good story.

Loved beating my best friend at one of his stupid basketball games. Nothin' but net!

In spite of despising the gameplay of the Mortal Kombat series, I appreciated its dark tone and story in the earliest entries (it got kinda stupid when 3 came out). To this day, fighting games with dark stories are downright nonexistant.

God of War Series.

I liked the idea and settings. Demigod out for revenge? Sounds great, in theory...
I wish it was a subtle as that. It is more of "Ultra death lord from hell rises up to obliterate everything that stands in his way in the goriest fashion possible"

The best is example is Mirror's Edge's controls/platforming were excellent. Far better than assassins creed or infamous where you just press one button and it's all automatic. The game itself was crap in every other way. Same could probably be said of every valve game. They usually have a decent gameplay gimmick (portal platforming, zombie AI, gravity gun), but half-assed narrative, level design, characters and just really linear and dull overall.

Super Meat Boy - The Sabbath is the most badass-looking thing ever. Except for those fucking blobs which the makers were just too lazy to actually animate. Seriously, they just kinda hang off the edge before kinda flickerying over to their next 90-degree rotation. I can animate better than that, for fuck's sake >.>

The opening section in the vault was very well done. The rest of Fallout 3 was dull and lifeless.

Then there was Moira Brown. She was awesome.

Half Life: Episode 2's Greg and Sheckle. I love that game purely because of their banter, "You ever see an Antlion before doc?"

Other than that the game felt like a huge escort mission with Alyx, "Gordon, look! A radio tower!"

"Yes Alyx, that's a radio tower! Now sit down shut up and shoot!"

Sorry, poor wording on my part. What I meant to say was: "The rest of Fallout 3 had no atmosphere whatsoever." I'd best describe the game like pacing back and forth in a solitary confinement cell. All you hear is your own footsteps and the occasional gunshot. It also has the "slowly makes you insane" side effect too.
