I'm with the OP RE: Mass Effect. When I first played it, I went "Eh..." and went away to play Fallout 3 for the millionth time. After several months, I went back to it and almost immediately something clicked and I was hooked!
I also agree that the first game feels very different to the others and in a good way. It's equally good that the other games mix things up and build on it (for better or worse) and it creates the unique perspective, for me at least, that each game feels refreshingly different while not harming the plot or the universe.
Sure it has it's faults but name me a game that doesn't.
