The Legend of Dragoon had a way to spice up combat...It was called "Additions". It's simply an optional QTE that allowed you to continue a combo for extra damage, with no negative reprecussions if you choose not to partake,or fail, unless you meet on of two criteria.
Criteria one for negative outcome:The enemy tries to counter. Instead of having to hit the X button at the right time,it's changed to O. You fal? Your combo ends, and you're hit for a truly pitifl amount of damage.
Criteria two for negative outcome:You're fighting Kongol. It's a case of "Complete the addition,or else". Upon failing an addition,Kongol would pick you up,slap you around a bit,and then throw you back to your position in the formation, all dealing out a sizeable chunk of damage. Thank goodness you only fight the bastard twice.
Limit the inventory,it forces you to be smart on how you pack, instead of "99 Potions,99 Phoenix Down,99...". Again,The Legend of Dragoon did this right, with a mere 32 inventory slots. I'd also like to see a PLOT FOR ONCE IN THIS DAMN DECADE! AN ORIGINAL ONE! Guess who pulled off an original plot? The Legend of Dragoon. Also Gothic and Final Fantasy VIII. Evolving characters is a MUST. The Legend of Dragoon ALSO DID THIS. See a trend?
Now let's remove achievements/trophies,add some secrets that are entirely optional, excruciatingly difficult to find, and,if you DO find them,it's freaking WORTH IT!
Add some bonus bosses that are nigh invincible, and a bitchin' soundtrack (Hint:Hire Jeremy Soule and Nobuo Uematsu to collaborate the soundtrack),and the game would be a masterpiece of an RPG.
