Think of picking up Destiny for Xbone.

So I have been playing the trial version of Destiny and I was surprised by how interested I was in a game that is basically an FPS horde mode, with loots. And as a result I have been thinking of picking it up since the Taken King package is only 40 bucks right now.

The only fear I have is playerbase. I did the first 3-man mission you get at level 8 and it took three hours to beat because I could only hit the tank boss for 7 damage per bullet in his weak spot. And my team spent most of the time dead. But we did it, or I did it I guess.

I was way under light level for the mission and with the full game I guess I would have to grind a little to make sure I was ready for a given mission.

What do you guys think? Is Destiny a game still worth picking up and playing at this stage of it's life?

Destiny bored me to tears. I played it before it was complete--that is what I'm choosing to call it before The Taken King--and while I got all the way to the end, I would have not made it if I hadn't had a friend to talk to while playing. Several people have told me to pick up The Taken King because it's how Destiny is supposed to be, but unless I get it as a gift or for stupid cheap, I fear the damage has been done in my opinion.

Now, with all that being said, I think you should get it. You have been checking out the trial version, and you have found that you enjoy it. That would have been my first suggestion: test it and see if it's for you. It clearly is, and I have one friend who has sunk quite possibly hundreds of hours into the game and he's still going strong. So if you enjoyed the trial, then the actual game is a step up from that because everyone I know says The Taken King fixes Destiny and makes it worth it.

Next, I believe (although I'm not certain) that you will be given the option to boost one of your characters to level 25 right out of the gate when you get the game. The reason being that Bungie understands that newcomers don't want to go through the grind of the early game--you got a taste of it, because yeah, you're doing jack damage--just to get to the good stuff. So that takes care of your second issue.

Finally, I'm pretty sure Destiny is going to be sticking around for a loooooooooooong time, even after Destiny 2 comes out. So you don't have to worry about the game becoming a ghost town. It has a very devoted fanbase, much like the Diablo games.

So yeah, I think you should pick it up. Forty dollars for everything that has been released for the game now is a good deal I think, even though I don't care for the game myself.

Look for a sherpa. The best PvE content - high-level strikes, and the raids - are best enjoyed with a good fireteam. The official Destiny sub, r/destinythegame, has a big thread every week for people in your situation.

I enjoyed some of the multiplayer when it first came out, and even though the campaign was lacking I still quite enjoyed the game play.

Unfortunately, I never liked how hard it was to get better gear for the character. I can't imagine I'll ever play it again really, which is a shame.

it still baffles me that Destiny doesn't have a way to do this in game. If you want access to "the heart of destiny and the best loot" you gotta put your controller down, crawl over to an internet source and post on a forum or search through it looking for a group around your level willing to do your thing, and then wait for everyone to get ready, instead of just having a function for it in game.

Back on topic, and I hope it's not too late, but judging by your use of the word "Trial," you dont have the actual game, and just lost money buying the EXPANSION, which costs 40 bucks and doesn't come with the base game. And if that is the case, you better do all you can to return that before you have to pay even more money just buying the base game and not getting the "complete edition" first. Plus, I think you actually need the other 2 "expansions" to even access the Taken King.

If I'm wrong and you actually managed to get complete edition for 40 bucks, good on you, that's about what the game is actually worth in it's entirety.

Personal thoughts from someone who never bought the seasons pass, and thus never forced myself to play the game like many other people to make my purchase worthwhile, holy shit this game is so damn boring. Pretty much everything you did in the trial is unchanged in the actual game, only you just shoot more of the same enemies, walking through the same paths over and over again as you do the same bounties/fireteam activities day after day, hour after hour. Year 1 of destiny was the god damn worst, and if I chose to put the disk in today, I would actually be able to do LESS in the game than I could in the first few months of the game because of how much stuff gets locked behind the DLC walls and the "updates" that the expansions have brought.

EDIT: oh right, I just remembered one of the biggest mistakes that Destiny made. The fucking Grimoire. Do you want to know what it is your fighting, who that person you bought that shitty gun from was, who is the traveller, why are there things on the moon, and any other questions like that? Well once again, you have to put your controller down, go to the internet, go to destiny forums, log in and wait for it to sync with your account, and THEN you can look at the glossary for shit in this game, provided you killed 100/500/3000/10000 of every enemy, including other guardians.

Why couldn't there have been a library section in the tower to do this sort of thing, it's full of wasted empty space so its not like there's no room for it. For fuck sakes, The Watchers room probably would have been perfect if it had a terminal for this shit, but no. All the backstory on characters and enemies isn't even a part of the actual game, it's just a wiki that gets more and more filled as you kill (literally) thousands of a single enemy for basically a collectible card with info/stats.

Well I am not about to dicatate what is good and bad to other people especially in something as subjective as the quality of a game I can say that I played Destiny before The Taken King was released and to me it is not a very good or enjoyable game. If I was not playing with friends it would have been put down very quickly. Ultimately even playing with friends which happens very rarely I might add (we all play very different games) it was to painful to continue playing after a certain point.

One of the friends I played a lot with was persuaded by work colleagues to come back to it after the taken king expansion and he said it was much better but he also said it was not enough to keep him invested and he stopped playing three weeks later despite others wanting him to stay.

I think how much you will get out of it is determined by how many people you can get around you in game. That is hardly an endorsement though as almost every game is better with friends. Playing solo is absolutely mind numbingly boring, MP netcode was also atrocious when I played making matches literally unplayable for me but I hear they have fixed that by allowing actual options now.

Personally i think Warframe would be a better investment of your time. Primarily because its free to play.

That or Vermintide. Oh gods Vermintide.

Well, you already got it, but yeah I'll echo the advice of finding a good set of mates or clan to run with. The social aspect (that the game itself supports rather poorly) is really what can keep the game going.

Taken King is a good romp, and leagues above the Vanilla campaign, but there's still a dearth of end-level content, and a lot of issues with excessive RNG in the endgame.

King's Fall loot is a disgrace. My raid group stopped running it after three weeks (nine runs) left us with three of the exact same armour pieces-- aside from Qullim's Terminus, the weapons are all mediocre at best. Loot drops from Trials of Osiris and Iron Banner are much better.
