Powerman 5000 [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WiU4bf1q4U4] and Pixies [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gcn0f5s-aas] and Eisbrecher [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bd4VlHqPVSU] and Tally Hall [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NygxzooUCcw] and Mors Principium Est. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1t7IX7GalQ]

I say Pixies because most likely if you've heard of them, you've heard of "Where is my Mind" and that is nothing like their other stuff.

Also, Tally Hall is one of my personal favorite bands and not many people have heard of them. They're very... different and weird, but still very catchy and varied.

I'm really into TV On The Radio at the moment, but then I'm also into Florence and The Machine and La Roux, which may or may not be considered mainstream.
Obviously if you don't have The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zep, The Jam, David Bowie and the likes you should get some.

Beck
CSS (Cansie de Ser Sexy)
Death From Above 1979
Doves
The Flaming Lips
Franz Ferdinand
The Horrors
Idiot Pilot
Ladyhawke
LCD Soundsystem
Lostprophets (First 2 albums)
Manic Street Preachers
MSTRKRFT
Queens of The Stone Age
Super Furry Animals (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED)
We Are Scientists
Yeah Yeah Yeahs

There's some good variety there for you to check out.

Listen to Can, there are 2 albums from them that are ESSENTIAL: "Edge Bamyasi" and "Future Days". They are an old and VERY influential band, just give them a try.

Try Animal Collective. The newer albums are more electronic, the old ones not so. It's all good, though. Daft Punk, The Germs, and Pixies are a few random picks of goodness.

You might wanna listen to a Finnish band called Poets of the Fall. Pretty brilliant stuff.

One of the best music vids ever.

Animal Collective are great, I've never heard of The Germs though but since I have everything else you mentioned on my iPod I'll scope out a few songs. =)

EDIT: Oh Hell yeahz, can never have enough 70's punk!

If you want a suggestion from someone with no taste in music whatsoever, I'd reccomend Spiralmouth. They're not the best in the world, but they're good for a change.

Try Hollywood Undead, Rage Against the Machine, Firewind (if you are into power metal), Eminem is a very good rap but I guess you have heard of him before, Massive Attack are very different from anything you probably have heard, Rise Against are a brilliant hard rock band and The Who are really good
I have a ridiculously long list thoughif you don't ike or have heard of them before

I listen to a lot of Dream Theater's older stuff, before they forgot what made their music so awesome. I also listen to a lot of Avenged Sevenfold.

The Gorillaz is fantastic if you want something different, deep, and full of awesomeness. Ok:Go I think is really good as well if you want something fun and light to listen to. The Weakerthans are also really talented with thought provoking, intelligent songs.

I recommend Stemage [http://www.stemage.com/]. Good indy rock there. Steely Dan [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steely_dan] had some great stuff throughout the years as well. Other than that, like a bunch of people have said, The Pixies are awesome.
